Since patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) often exhibit motor disability and receive disease-modifying therapy (DMT), which has an immunosuppressive effect, it is plausible that this will affect the susceptibility of MS patients to COVID-19, as well as the course of this disease. However, current data indicate that the use of DMT does not cause negative prognosis in COVID-19 sufferers, but the motor disability progression associated with MS does. In this study, we present the case reports of 4 patients with relapsing-remitting MS, who developed COVID-19, and despite the use of DMT the course of the disease was mild. Two patients were treated with dimethyl fumarate, one with Interferon β1b and one with glatiramer acetate. One of the patients using dimethyl fumarate had lymphopenia. All patients had symptoms of COVID-19 from the nervous system, the most frequent being headache, which occurred in all patients. The aim of this article is to present a case series of four patients with MS and COVID-19, and to discuss the available literature on COVID-19 in patients with MS, with particular consideration of the impact of DMT.
Cerebral developmental venous anomalies (DVAs) are frequently diagnosed incidentally owing to the advances in neuroimaging. They are regarded as clinically insignificant due to their supposed quiescent existence which the authors aimed to contradict in this paper.
In the aim of constituting a better understanding of clinical presentation of DVAs and making an estimation regarding the probability of resulting in a hemorrhage, the authors presented their experiences with a case series of DVAs.
A retrospective analysis was carried out among patients who underwent brain MRI in a radiology department of a university between January of 2019 and January of 2020.
A total of 101 patients with DVA were extracted. selleckchem 38 patients had isolated DVAs, while 63 patients had various accompanying cerebral pathologies, mostly cavernomas (39 patients) and AVMs (11 patients). The main complaints leading investigation were headache, dizziness, ataxia, nausea\vomiting, seizures and focal neurological deficits. 41 patients were truly symptomatic with indicative findings of seizures, neurological deficits or intracranial hemorrhages, and 12 of them had solitary DVAs. 22 patients presented with hemorrhages, and of them, 10 had only DVA, while the rest had some associated lesions, most often cavernoma. Of 22 patients with hemorrhage, 5 were operated, 5 were applied radiosurgery; while the rest were followed without any intervention.
Although the symptoms in patients with DVA are generally charged on other associated pathologies, the fact that isolated DVAs may occasionally be problematic in the range of minor symptoms and severe hemorrhage should not be underestimated.

As the initial stages of caryopses development are of much importance for grain filling, spatio-temporal expressions of the miRNAs were studied during these periods in the spikelets of a compact-panicle rice cultivar, Oryza sativa cv. Mahalaxmi, bearing numerous spikelets per panicle to understand the reason of poor grain filling at the level of the initial biochemical events. Differential expression of several known miRNAs between the superior and inferior spikelets suggested great difference in metabolism related to grain filling in the spikelets based on their spatial location on compact panicle. Expressions of five known and four novel miRNAs were validated by Northern. Their targets included the enzymes directly involved in starch biosynthesis like sucrose synthase, starch synthase and pullulanase, besides others. Spatio-temporal expression studies of these miRNAs in the spikelets of Mahalaxmi revealed a pattern of mostly a greater expression in the inferior spikelets compared with the superior ones concomitant with an inverse expression of the target genes, which was not observed in the lax-panicle cultivar Upahar. The study thus revealed that the grain filling in rice is greatly regulated by miRNAs, and these miRNAs or their target genes could be considered for biotechnological interventions for improving grain filling in the rice cultivars of interest.Alteration of fruit quality caused by environmental stress is a common but largely unresolved issue for plant cultivation and breeding practices. Phosphorus (P) deficiency may interfere with a variety of metabolic processes whose intermediate products are correlated with important fruit quality traits. However, how low P stress affects fruit quality has not been investigated in detail. In this study, we assessed the contents of major metabolites associated with tomato fruit quality under two low P treatments that started at the seedling or flowering stage. The major pigments and the key organic acids related to fruit sourness were differentially over-accumulated as fruit ripened under two low P treatments compared to those under the control treatment, while the total content of soluble sugars contributing to fruit sweetness was substantially reduced under both treatments. These changes were largely attributed to the alteration of enzyme activities in the relevant metabolic pathways. In particular, we found that low P stress from different developmental stages had differential effects on the activation of γ-aminobutyric acid shunt that were likely responsible for the preferential accumulation of different organic acids in tomato fruits.
