This paper proposes an approach and demonstrates its application for cross-border exchange of ePrescriptions in the European Union. A business process model of the main use case for exchange of prescription content in the eHealth Digital Service Infrastructure is created and analyzed. The novelty in this approach is the proposed encoding of the basic dataset in a Quick Response (QR) code in terms of an XML scheme that is independent of clinical models or proprietary database structures. It allows to inverse the dataflow control in the chain of message exchanges between Dispenser and National Contact Points. The proposed inversion of control positions the citizen with the QR code of the prescription in the center of that chain of message exchanges between the main actors of the business process. The independent format of content representation in the QR code allows the actors in the message exchange to auto-populate data in their registers when the medicine is dispensed. Initial results are reported and reveal the advantages of embedding prescription details in QR code employing a common independent XML scheme.Smart home systems create new opportunities for patient care. In this paper, a role model is created for the different groups of people involved in the care process of an occupant. Based on a systematic literature review seven roles were identified. A second literature review deals with the topic Feedback of Smart Home Systems. Combining both reviews visualization proposals were created and are presented for two of the roles. The role model is adapted to German health system but could be transformed for different countries. To confirm the results an evaluation of role model and visualization proposal should be done in collaboration with possible users of smart homes.Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a growing Public Health problem. Recent evidence points that low education and poor socio-economic conditions are associated with higher risk of developing CKD and progressing to dialysis or transplantation need. Hence patient empowerment through health education and qualification with technological tools that allows better treatment adherence may play an important role in the achievement of optimal clinical outcomes. The Renal Health is a multidisciplinary project created at the University of Fortaleza, northeast Brazil, in 2015, aiming to create novel educational material and technological tools for people with CKD, in different treatment modalities, including dialysis and transplant. The products developed so far in the project include an application for smartphones aiming to help patients in dialysis and transplant in their treatments, including schedule for medications, with alarms, water ingestion control, laboratory tests results, and medical appointments' agenda, besides all information regarding CKD. The other tools include a medication box, an insole for weight control (both are in the prototype phase), connection with smartbands (for vital signs monitoring) and multimedia educational tools, including a profile in the Instagram and a channel in YouTube. Since the first release of the application in the virtual stores, there were more than 1,000 downloads, predominantly in Brazil, although the app is also available in English and Spanish. All these tools represent innovative ways of patient empowerment and may be increasingly present in daily life. Further studies are required to assess the impact of these tools in patients' outcomes, including CKD progression and mortality.The purpose of this study is to present the design, development and initial evaluation of a smartphone software (mobile app), for the needs of nursing bedside shift reporting and documentation. The app records and process nursing handovers concerning haemodialysis patient data, and it runs on Android smartphones, offering a structured and friendly user interface. Data are collected, processed, stored and accessed easily, quickly and securely by authorized users. The evaluation, based on discussions and semi-structured interviews with a group of nurses, showed positive feedback on the user interface, structure and functions of the prototype. It can be a useful and efficient tool for the reporting and communication needs between nurses. Conclusions about the limitations of the study and future developments are reported.Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is the most common Motor Neuron Disease. This paper presents the design, development, and evaluation of an online tool that provides information and training materials to caregivers about ALS, to promote health care and quality of life of patients. To collect the appropriate content, a literature review was conducted, and a Content Management System (CMS) was used for the development of the tool. For its evaluation, reliability, acceptance, effectiveness and usefulness were examined through semi-structured interviews. The online tool was positively evaluated by the caregivers, who participated in the evaluation process.The use of Conversational agents (CAs) in healthcare is an emerging field. These CAs seem to be effective in accomplishing administrative tasks, e.g. providing locations of care facilities and scheduling appointments. Modern CAs use machine learning (ML) to recognize, understand and generate a response. Given the criticality of many healthcare settings, ML and other component errors may result in CA failures and may cause adverse effects on patients. Therefore, in-depth assurance is required before the deployment of ML in critical clinical applications, e.g. management of medication dose or medical diagnosis. ABT-199 cost CA safety issues could arise due to diverse causes, e.g. related to user interactions, environmental factors and ML errors. In this paper, we classify failures of perception (recognition and understanding) of CAs and their sources. We also present a case study of a CA used for calculating insulin dose for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) patients. We then correlate identified perception failures of CAs to potential scenarios that might compromise patient safety.E-health plays a crucial role in E-government by proposing healthcare services based on information technology. However, the way to administer these services by using E-health solutions is one of the challenging issues. One of these significant challenges is how one integrates heterogeneous healthcare information of the different point of care systems. This paper introduces the Iranian integrated care electronic health record using the information gathered from several point-of-care systems in healthcare enterprises in Iran. This service-oriented architecture has a remarkable characteristic - its accessibility to medical knowledge and medical concepts through archetypes and ontology, respectively. The Ministry of Health and Medical Education of the Islamic Republic of Iran has designed and implemented this national architecture.
