What is a driver's licence?

A driver's license is a valid document issued by a government agency which certifies the bearer's identity and legal authorization to operate a motor vehicle on public roads. It usually displays the driver's name and date of birth, photo, and address. Most states require drivers to pass an exam to prove they understand the rules and regulations of driving. Driver's licenses can also serve as a proof of identity when traveling abroad. The number on the back of the license is usually used to identify purposes by banks and other public authorities.

In the United States, driver's licenses are typically issued by the state's department of motor vehicles (DMV). They are valid for a number of years, based on the type of license and driver's age. Most driver's licenses contain a unique alphanumeric code which is given to the bearer by the agency that issued the license, along with their photo and other personal information. Certain states have added a barcode on their driver's licenses to facilitate electronic records.
