Leveraging the population approach using Bayesian inference, we estimated times of tumor initiation using three late measurement timepoints. The reduced Gompertz model was found to exhibit the best results, with drastic improvements when using Bayesian inference as compared to likelihood maximization alone, for both accuracy and precision. Specifically, mean accuracy (prediction error) was 12.2% versus 78% and mean precision (width of the 95% prediction interval) was 15.6 days versus 210 days, for the breast cancer cell line. These results demonstrate the superior predictive power of the reduced Gompertz model, especially when combined with Bayesian estimation. They offer possible clinical perspectives for personalized prediction of the age of a tumor from limited data at diagnosis. The code and data used in our analysis are publicly available at https//github.com/cristinavaghi/plumky.The purpose of this experiment was to investigate whether honey bees (Apis mellifera) are able to use social discriminative stimuli in a spatial aversive conditioning paradigm. We tested bees' ability to avoid shock in a shuttle box apparatus across multiple groups when either shock, or the absence of shock, was associated with a live hive mate, a dead hive mate, a live Polistes exclamans wasp or a dead wasp. Additionally, we used several control groups common to bee shuttle box research where shock was only associated with spatial cues, or where shock was associated with a blue or yellow color. While bees were able to learn the aversive task in a simple spatial discrimination, the presence of any other stimuli (color, another bee, or a wasp) reduced initial performance. While the color biases we discovered are in line with other experiments, the finding that the presence of another animal reduces performance is novel. Generally, it appears that the use of bees or wasps as stimuli initially causes an increase in overall activity that interferes with early performance in the spatial task. During the course of the experiment, the bees habituate to the insect stimuli (bee or wasp), and begin learning the aversive task. Additionally, we found that experimental subject bees did not discriminate between bees or wasps used as stimulus animals, nor did they discriminate between live or dead stimulus animals. This may occur, in part, due to the specialized nature of the worker honey bee. Results are discussed with implications for continual research on honey bees as models of aversive learning, as well as research on insect social learning in general.We reviewed charts and radiologic studies of 30 patients operated upon by ADR with Mobi-C® in single level since 2006. All patients had healthy cervical facet joints (less than or equal to grade 1 according to grading systems for cervical facet joint degeneration) preoperatively. We assessed clinical outcomes with NDI and VAS on neck and arm over follow-up and also measured ROM at implanted segment on dynamic radiographs during follow-up. The mean follow-up period was 42.4 ± 15.9 months. We then assessed the linearity of changes in ROM at implanted segment through linear mixed model. All patients showed significantly improved clinical outcomes. ROMs at implanted segment were maintained at slightly increased levels until 24 months postoperatively (P = 0.529). However, after 24 months, ROMs at implanted segment decreased significantly until last follow-up (P = 0.001). In addition, the decreasing pattern after 24 months showed a regular regression (P = 0.001). This decline was correlated with decline of extension angle at implanted segment. Based on this regular regression, we estimated that ROMs at implanted segments would be less than 2 degrees at 10.24 years postoperatively. Even though implanted segment maintains its motion for some length of time, we could assume that an artificial disc would have limited life expectancy correlated with the decline of extension angle.In locally advanced lung cancer, established baseline clinical variables show limited prognostic accuracy and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG PET) radiomics features may increase accuracy for optimal treatment selection. Their robustness and added value relative to current clinical factors are unknown. Hence, we identify robust and independent PET radiomics features that may have complementary value in predicting survival endpoints. A 4D PET dataset (n = 70) was used for assessing the repeatability (Bland-Altman analysis) and independence of PET radiomics features (Spearman rank |ρ| less then 0.5). Two 3D PET datasets combined (n = 252) were used for training and validation of an elastic net regularized generalized logistic regression model (GLM) based on a selection of clinical and robust independent PET radiomics features (GLMall). The fitted model performance was externally validated (n = 40). The performance of GLMall (measured with area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, AUC) was highest in predicting 2-year overall survival (0.66±0.07). No significant improvement was observed for GLMall compared to a model containing only PET radiomics features or only clinical variables for any clinical endpoint. External validation of GLMall led to AUC values no higher than 0.55 for any clinical endpoint. In this study, robust independent FDG PET radiomics features did not have complementary value in predicting survival endpoints in lung cancer patients. Mycetoma may be caused by true fungi (eumycetoma) or filamentous aerobic bacteria (actinomycetoma). Mycetoma is more frequent in the so-called mycetoma belt (latitude 15° south and 30° north around the Tropic of Cancer), especially in Sudan, Nigeria, Somalia, India, Mexico, and Venezuela. The introduction of new antibiotics with fewer side effects, broader susceptibility profiles, and different administration routes has made information on actinomycetoma treatment and outcomes necessary. The objective of this report was to provide an update on clinical, therapeutic, and outcome data for patients with actinomycetoma attending a reference center in northeast Mexico. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS This was a retrospective, cross-sectional, descriptive study of 31 patients (male to female ratio 3.41) diagnosed with actinomycetoma by direct grain examination, histopathology, culture, or serology from January 2009 to September 2018.
