A growing body of work demonstrates that a species' socioecology can impact its cognitive abilities. Indeed, even closely related species with different socioecological pressures often show different patterns of cognitive performance on the same task. Here, we explore whether major differences in social tolerance in two closely related macaque species can impact a core sociocognitive ability, the capacity to recognize what others see. Specifically, we compared the performance of Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus, n = 80) and rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta, n = 62) on a standard test of visual perspective understanding. In contrast to the difference in performance, one might expect from these species' divergent socioecologies that our results show similar performance across Barbary and rhesus macaques, with both species forming expectations about how another agent will act based on that agent's visual perspective. These results suggest that differences in socioecology may not play as big of a role in the evolution of some theory of mind capacities as they do in other decision-making or foraging contexts.
Revision surgery in an irreducible atlantoaxial dislocation (IAAD) previously operated with a posterior approach is challenging. Multiple modalities using anterior, posterior, and dual approaches have been described. We report a so far unreported technique of revision surgery by posterior implant removal and decompression with anterior transoral release followed by posterior instrumentation.
14-year male with basilar invagination (BI) with IAAD, previously operated with posterior decompression and instrumented occipitocervical fusion presented three months later with post-traumatic recurrence of myelopathy with quadriparesis with Di Lorenzo grade 4 and loss of reduction. He was operated with a posterior implant and early fusion mass removal with extended foramen magnum decompression (FMD), followed by anterior transoral release with a satisfactory reduction on traction, and finally, a posterior revision instrumented occipitocervical fusion.
At 2-year follow-up, the patient was symptom-free with Di Lorenzo grade 1 and cervicomedullary angle improvement from 97.4° to 141.2°; achieving bony fusion.

Single-stage posterior-anterior transoral-posterior approach can be used to achieve satisfactory reduction for a revision BI with IAAD with prior posterior instrumentation.Using rigorous and clinically relevant experimental design and analysis standards, in this study, we investigated the potential of histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors panobinostat and entinostat to enhance recovery of motor function after photothrombotic stroke in male mice. Panobinostat, a pan-HDAC inhibitor, is a FDA-approved drug for certain cancers, whereas entinostat is a class-I HDAC inhibitor in late stage of clinical investigation. The drugs were administered every other day (panobinostat-3 or 10 mg/kg; entinostat-1.7 or 5 mg/kg) starting from day 5 to 15 after stroke. To imitate the current standard of care in stroke survivors, i.e., physical rehabilitation, the animals run on wheels (2 h daily) from post-stroke day 9 to 41. The predetermined primary end point was motor recovery measured in two tasks of spontaneous motor behaviors in grid-walking and cylinder tests. In addition, we evaluated the running distance and speed throughout the study, and the number of parvalbumin-positive neurons in medial agranular cortex (AGm) and infarct volumes at the end of the study. Both sensorimotor tests revealed that combination of physical exercise with either drug did not substantially affect motor recovery in mice after stroke. This was accompanied by negligible changes of parvalbumin-positive neurons recorded in AGm and comparable infarct volumes among experimental groups, while dose-dependent increase in acetylated histone 3 was observed in peri-infarct cortex of drug-treated animals. Our observations suggest that add-on panobinostat or entinostat therapy coupled with limited physical rehabilitation is unlikely to offer therapeutic modality for stroke survivors who have motor dysfunction.Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a (re)emerging arbovirus and the causative agent of chikungunya fever. In recent years, CHIKV was responsible for a series of outbreaks, some of which had serious economic and public health impacts in the affected regions. So far, no CHIKV-specific antiviral therapy or vaccine has been approved. This review gives a brief summary on CHIKV epidemiology, spread, infection and diagnosis. It furthermore deals with the strategies against emerging diseases, drug development and the possibilities of testing antivirals against CHIKV in vitro and in vivo. With our review, we hope to provide the latest information on CHIKV, disease manifestation, as well as on the current state of CHIKV vaccine development and post-exposure therapy.
Conventional adenomas (CAs) and serrated polyps (SPs) are precursors to colorectal cancer (CRC). Understanding metachronous cancer risk is poor due to lack of accurate large-volume datasets. We outline the use of natural language processing (NLP) in forming the Partners Colonoscopy Cohort, an integrated longitudinal cohort of patients undergoing colonoscopies.
We identified endoscopy quality data from endoscopy reports for colonoscopies performed from 2007 to 2018 in a large integrated healthcare system, Mass General Brigham). Through modification of an established NLP pipeline, we extracted histopathological data (polyp location, histology and dysplasia) from corresponding pathology reports. Pathology and endoscopy data were merged by polyp location using a four-stage algorithm. Selleck Ciforadenant NLP and merging procedures were validated by manual review of 500 pathology reports.
305,656 colonoscopies in 213,924 patients were identified. After merging, 76,137 patients had matched polyp data for 334,750 polyps. CAs and SPs were present in 86,707 (28.5%) and 55,373 (18.2%) colonoscopies. Among patients with polyps at index screening colonoscopy, 14,931 (33.4%) had follow-up colonoscopy (median 46.4, interquartile range 33.8-62.4months); 91 (0.2%) and 1127 (2.5%) patients developed metachronous CRC and high-risk polyps (polyps ≥ 10mm or CAs having high-grade dysplasia/villous/tublovillous histology or SPs with dysplasia). Genetic data were available for 23,787 (31.7%) patients with polyps from the Partners Biobank. The validation study showed a positive predictive value of 100% for polyp histology and locations.
