According to the data that emerged from this review, it is possible to hypothesize that there are possibilities for PBM to play a beneficial role in treating cancer patients, but further evidence about its clinical efficacy and the identification of protocols and correct dosages is still needed.Long-term hormone replacement therapy due to panhypopituitarism can lead to serious complications and thus, pituitary transplantation is considered a more desirable. We investigated functional restoration after allotransplatation of the pituitary gland. We transplanted extracted pituitary gland into the omentum of an hypophysectomized rat. Two experiments were performed (1) to confirm the hypophysectomy was successful and (2) to assess functional restoration after pituitary transplantation. Pituitary hormone level and weight change were consecutively assessed. Electron microscopic (EM) examinations were performed to identify morphological changes at 3 days after transplantation. We confirmed that pituitary gland was properly extracted from 6 rats after sacrifice. The findings showed (1) a weight loss of more than 3% or (2) a weight change of less than 2% along with a decreased growth hormone (GH) level by more than 80% at 2 weeks post-hypophysectomy. A further four rats underwent pituitary transplantation after hypophysectomy and were compared with the previously hypophysectomized rats. All showed rapid weight gain during the two weeks after transplantation. The thyroid-stimulating hormone, prolactin, and GH levels were restored at one week post-transplantation and maintained for 10 weeks. Hypophyseal tissue architecture was maintained at 3 days after transplantation, as indicated by EM. Roscovitine concentration The aim of the present study was to explore the diversity and antimicrobial activity of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains (n = 99) isolated from ready-to-eat (RTE) seafood (cold-smoked salmon (CSS), gravlax, and sushi) towards two strains of Listeria monocytogenes (CCUG 15527, F11), Listeria innocua (CCUG 15531) and Escherichia coli (CCUG 38079). The LAB strains were assigned to five different genera (Carnobacterium spp., Lactobacillus spp., Leuconostoc spp., Weissella spp., and Enterococcus sp.) by sequencing a 1150 bp stretch of the 16S rRNA gene. A significant association between the seafood source and the distribution of LAB genera was found (p less then 0.001), of which Leuconostoc spp. were most prevalent in sushi and Carnobacterium sp. and Lactobacillus sp. were most frequently isolated from CSS and gravlax. Antimicrobial activity among the LAB was significantly affected by LAB genera (F= 117.91, p less then 0.001, one-way ANOVA), product of origin (F = 3.47, p less then 0.05), and target (F = 4.64, p = 0.003). LAB isolated from sushi demonstrated a significantly higher antimicrobial effect than LAB from CSS and gravlax (p less then 0.05). In general, a significantly higher antimicrobial activity was found towards Listeria spp. than E. coli (p less then 0.05). However, Leuconostoc spp. demonstrated similar antimicrobial effects towards E. coli and Listeria spp., except for L. monocytogenes F11 being more sensitive (p less then 0.05). This study suggested that seafood-derived LAB strains could be selected for technological application in RTE seafood systems.Intentional poisoning is a global wildlife problem and an overlooked risk factor for public health. Managing poisoning requires unbiased and high-quality data through wildlife monitoring protocols, which are largely lacking. We herein evaluated the biases associated with current monitoring programmes of wildlife poisoning in Spain. We compared the national poisoning database for the 1990-2015 period with information obtained from a field experiment during which we used camera-traps to detect the species that consumed non-poisoned baits. Our findings suggest that the detection rate of poisoned animals is species-dependent Several animal groups (e.g., domestic mammalian carnivores and vultures) tended to be over-represented in the poisoning national database, while others (e.g., corvids and small mammals) were underrepresented. As revealed by the GLMM analyses, the probability of a given species being overrepresented was higher for heaviest, aerial, and cryptic species. In conclusion, we found that monitoring poisoned fauna based on heterogeneous sources may produce important biases in detection rates; thus, such information should be used with caution by managers and policy-makers. Our findings may guide to future search efforts aimed to reach a more comprehensive understanding of the intentional wildlife poisoning problem.There are many methods for incorporating organic corrosion inhibitors to oxide coatings formed on aluminum alloys. However, typically they require relatively concentrated solutions of inhibitors, possibly generating a problematic waste and/or are time-/energy-consuming (elevated temperature is usually needed). The authors propose a three-step method of oxide layer formation on 6061-T651 aluminum alloy (AAs) via alternating current (AC) plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO), impregnation with an 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ) solution, and final sealing by an additional direct current (DC) polarization in the original PEO electrolyte. The obtained coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, roughness tests, contact angle measurements, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Additionally, corrosion resistance was assessed by potentiodynamic polarization in a NaCl solution. Two types of the coating were formed (A-thicker, more porous at 440 mA cm-2; B-thinner, more compact at 220 mA cm-2) on the AA substrate. The 8-HQ impregnation was successful as evidenced by XPS. It increased the contact angle only for the B coatings and improved the corrosion resistance of both coating systems. Additional DC treatment destroyed superficially adsorbed 8-HQ. However, it served to block the coating pores (contact angle ≈ 80°) which improved the corrosion resistance of the coating systems. DC sealing alone did not bring about the same anti-corrosion properties as the combined 8-HQ impregnation and DC treatment which dispels the notion that the provision of the inhibitor was a needless step in the procedure. The proposed method of AA surface treatment suffered from unsatisfactory uniformity of the sealing for the thicker coatings, which needs to be amended in future efforts for optimization of the procedure.
