Bacterial phytopathogens represent a significant threat to many economically important crops. Current control measures often inflict harm on the environment and may ultimately impact on human health through the spread of antibiotic resistance. Antimicrobial proteins such as bacteriocins have been suggested as the next generation of disease control agents since they are able to specifically target the pathogen of interest with minimal impact on the wider microbial community and environment. However, substantial gaps in knowledge with regards to the efficacy and application of bacteriocins to combat phytopathogenic bacteria remain. Here we highlight the immediate challenges the community must address to ensure maximum exploitation of antimicrobial proteins in the field. see more © 2021 The Authors. Smartphone addiction has been associated with sleeping problems and psychological anxiety. However, little is known about the association of smartphone addiction, sleep quality and perceived stress amongst university students particularly in dentistry. This study investigated the association of these variables amongst dental students in a Jordanian dental faculty.
A sample of 420 undergraduate dental students enrolled for academic year 2017/2018 at the Jordan University of Science and Technology participated in this study. They were given a set of self-administered questionnaires which consisted of questions regarding demographic information, characteristics of smartphone use, assessment of smartphone addiction, sleep quality as well as perceived stress.
The mean Smartphone Addiction Scale (SAS) score amongst Jordanian dental students was high (109.9±23.8). The correlation between SAS and Global Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score was significant (r=0.137, P=0.005) indicating that the higher the f educational campaigns, counselling, psychotherapy and stress management.
The quality of end-of-life (Q-EOL) care is influenced by various factors such as resources for palliative care (PC). We introduced a multi-professional expert team (MET) in 2014, which provides home-based care for children and adolescents with incurable cancer. This study investigated the impacts of the outreach activities by the MET on Q-EOL care of pediatric oncology patients.
This observational study retrospectively examined 112 patients receiving EOL care between 1989 and 2018 at a pediatric cancer center in Japan. Some of the indicators of Q-EOL care before and after the introduction of the outreach activities by the MET were compared. The subjects were 92 in pre-MET and 20 in post-MET periods.
The median days for which the patients stayed at home at the last seven or 30 days were significantly prolonged in post-MET period (0.0 vs. 1.5 days, P=0.020, 3.0 vs. 12.0 days, P=0.042). The change was more significant in hematologic malignancies compared with solid and CNS tumors. Patients receiving longer PC before their deaths could stay at home longer during the last seven days. The ratio of patients receiving PC for more than two months was significantly increased in post-MET period (60.9 vs. 90.0%, P=0.014). In addition, more patients greeted their deaths at home in post-MET period (3.3 vs. 25.0%, P<0.001).
The activities by the MET transformed EOL care of children and adolescents with incurable cancer. Earlier transitions to PC from curative treatment were associated with longer home-based care and more deaths at home.

Atypical HS, such as facial HS, dissecting cellulitis of the scalp (DCS), nape HS, and HS lymphedema has also been described. There is scarce evidence about the treatment of atypical HS. To describe the efficacy of biologic drugs and adjuvant therapeutic interventions used in patients with atypical HS who had an inadequate response to systemic antibiotics. Prospective case series study of patients with atypical HS (facial HS, DCS, nape HS, and HS lymphedema) treated with biologic drugs in a HS Clinic setting. Disease activity indexes, sociodemographic, clinical, and safety variables were collected. Two patients met criteria for Facial HS, three met criteria for DCS/nape HS and three patients met criteria for HS lymphedema. Patients with facial HS achieved rapid improvement without requiring other therapies. Patients with DCS, nape HS, and HS lymphedema showed variable response, with decrease of activity indexes, and requiring adjuvant treatments. Biologic drugs are useful in the management of special HS locations. In the case of facial HS, biologic therapy seems to be quite effective as monotherapy. In the cases of DCS, HS lymphedema and nape HS, treatment combination or intensification may be needed.Several areas of research into the prevention and treatment of obesity today can be traced to one or more of the scientific works pioneered by Ancel Keys between the 1930s to 1970s in fields that cut across the physiology of extremes and public health nutrition. These range from his classical studies into how body and mind respond to chronic exposure to hypoxia in "The Physiology of Life at High Altitudes" or to simulated famine under controlled laboratory conditions in "The Biology of Human Starvation", the impact of diet and lifestyle on cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in "The Seven Countries Study," to the "Indices of Relative Weight and Obesity" in which he identified what has since been the most widely utilized diagnostic tool to monitor obesity across populations worldwide and which he coined as the body mass index. The contribution of Ancel Keys to medical sciences through his observations, analytical approaches, and research output of his classic studies, and how these have (and continue) to impact on a plethora of current concepts in obesity research today, are embodied in the eight review articles that constitute this supplement reporting the proceedings of the 10th Fribourg Obesity Research Conference.
