Diabetic retinopathy and chronic kidney disease are both major complications of diabetes mellitus. We explored the relationship between retinal vessel density (VD) and albuminuria in diabetic patients without conventionally defined diabetic retinopathy.
The cross-sectional community-based Kailuan Diabetic Retinopathy Study included patients with type 2 diabetes without diabetic retinopathy who participated in the community-based longitudinal Kailuan study and who had undergone ocular fundus photography, kidney function assessment, and optical coherence tomographic angiography (OCT-angiography) for the assessment the retinal perfusion density (PD) and retinal VD.
The study included 447 patients (mean age 60.9±9.7years). Higher PD and VD were associated with a lower urinary albumin-creatinine ratio (uACR) (macular region p=0.007 standardized regression coefficient beta -0.14; and p=0.008, beta -0.13, respectively; parafoveal region p=0.006, beta -0.14; and p=0.007, beta -0.14, respectively) after adjustincular parameters, diabetic patients without diabetic retinopathy showed a reduction in OCT-angiographic retinal vascular measurements in association with systemic parameters indicating chronic kidney disease. Optical coherence tomographic (OCT)-angiographic retinal microvascular parameters may serve as markers for chronic kidney disease.Ionic defects (e.g., organic cations and halide anions), preferably residing along grain boundaries (GBs) and on perovskite film surfaces, are known to be a major source of the notorious environmental instability of perovskite solar cells (PeSCs). Although passivating ionic defects is desirable, previous approaches using Lewis base or acid molecules as additives suppress only the negatively or positively charged defects, thus leaving oppositely charged defects. In this work, both the cationic and anionic defects inside methyl ammonium lead tri-iodide (MAPbI3 ) are simultaneously passivated by introducing a zwitterionic form of the amino acid, L-alanine, into the precursor solution as an additive. L-alanine has both positive (NH3+ ) and negative (COO- ) functional groups at a specific solvent pH, thereby passivating both the cation and anion defects in MAPbI3 . The addition of L-alanine increases the grain size of the perovskite crystals and lengthens the charge carrier lifetime (τ > 1 µs), leading to improved power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 20.3% (from 18.3% without an additive) for small-area (4.64 mm2 ) devices and 15.6% (from 13.5%) for large-area submodules (9.06 cm2 ). More importantly, the authors' approach also significantly enhances the shelf storage and photoirradiation stabilities of PeSCs.Handheld Raman spectroscopy is an emerging technique for rapid on-site detection of drugs of abuse. Most devices are developed for on-scene operation with a user interface that only shows whether cocaine has been detected. Extensive validation studies are unavailable, and so are typically the insight in raw spectral data and the identification criteria. This work evaluates the performance of a commercial handheld Raman spectrometer for cocaine detection based on (i) its performance on 0-100 wt% binary cocaine mixtures, (ii) retrospective comparison of 3,168 case samples from 2015 to 2020 analyzed by both gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and Raman, (iii) assessment of spectral selectivity, and (iv) comparison of the instrument's on-screen results with combined partial least square regression (PLS-R) and discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) models. The limit of detection was dependent on sample composition and varied between 10 wt% and 40 wt% cocaine. Because the average cocaine content in street samples is well above this limit, a 97.5% true positive rate was observed in case samples. selleck inhibitor No cocaine false positives were reported, although 12.5% of the negative samples were initially reported as inconclusive by the built-in software. The spectral assessment showed high selectivity for Raman peaks at 1,712 (cocaine base) and 1,716 cm-1 (cocaine HCl). Combined PLS-R and PLS-DA models using these features confirmed and further improved instrument performance. This study scientifically assessed the performance of a commercial Raman spectrometer, providing useful insight on its applicability for both presumptive detection and legally valid evidence of cocaine presence for law enforcement.
Considering the wide impact of endometriosis on various aspects of health, this study aimed to explore the impact of endometriosis on Iranian women's lives.
The present study used a qualitative approach and conventional content analysis.
Twenty patients suffering from endometriosis referring to Imam Khomeini Hospital in Tehran took part in this study. The sampling was done purposefully until data saturation. After deep semi-structured interviews, the content analysis of the interviews was done according to the steps proposed by Zhang and Wildemuth.
The mean age of the participants was 34.53 (SD 5.81) years (range 23-43) with duration of illness of 6.30±5.86years. Their educational level varied from high school to university, and most of them were employed. Analysis of the data from participants' experiences led to the formation of 5 categories under the titles "Physical suffering, instability of marital life, mental disorder, disruption in social life and self-care" and 11 subcategories.
The findings of the present study showed that endometriosis can adversely affect women's lives including physical, sexual, psychological and social problems. Although in some cases patients adopt different strategies for self-care, the need for more support is felt.

To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis on the levels of oxidative stress markers and antioxidants in keratoconus compared to healthy subject.
The PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Science Direct and Google Scholar databases were searched on 1st June 2020 for studies reporting oxidative and antioxidative stress markers in keratoconus and healthy controls. Main meta-analysis was stratified by type of biomarkers, type of samples (tears, cornea, aqueous humour and blood) and type of corneal samples (stromal cells, epithelium and endothelium).
We included 36 articles, for a total of 1328 keratoconus patients and 1208 healthy controls. There is an overall increase in oxidative stress markers in keratoconus compared with healthy controls (standard mean deviation (SMD)=0.94, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 0.55-1.33), with a significant increase in reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (1.09, 0.41-1.78) and malondialdehyde (1.78, 0.83-2.73). There is an overall decrease in antioxidants in keratoconus compared with healthy controls (-0.
