Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are regarded as promising secondary energy storage devices for their high energy density and low cost. The electrochemical performance of Li-S batteries is mainly determined by the efficient and reversible conversion of lithium-polysulfides to Li2S when discharging and to S when charging. Herein, a catalytic strategy is proposed to accelerate the reversible conversion of S and the discharge products in Li-S batteries. This reversible transformation is achieved with active sites of single-atom iron on nitrogen- and sulfur-doped porous carbon (FeNSC). We prove that the synergy between atomically dispersed iron and doped sulfur accelerates the reversible electrochemical conversion reactions in Li-S batteries. The FeNSC/S hybrid cathode exhibits superior long-term cycling stability even at a high current density of 1C, with only 0.047% capacity decay per cycle over 1000 cycles. This study demonstrates a novel method for improving the conversion of polysulfides based on electrocatalysis strategies to ultimately obtain high-performance Li-S batteries.Mouse brain contains over 100 million neuronal, glial, and other support cells. Developing neurons and astrocytes synthesize their own cholesterol, and disruption of this process can occur by both genetic and chemical mechanisms. In this study we have exposed cultured murine neurons and astrocytes to six different prescription medications that cross the placenta and blood-brain barriers and analyzed the effects of these drugs on cholesterol biosynthesis by an LC-MS/MS protocol that assays 14 sterols and 7 oxysterols in a single run. Three antipsychotics (haloperidol, cariprazine, aripiprazole), two antidepressants (trazodone and sertraline), and an antiarhythmic (amiodarone) inhibited one or more sterol synthesis enzymes. The result of the exposures was a dose-dependent increase in levels of various sterol intermediates and a decreased level of cholesterol in the cultured cells. Four prescription medications (haloperidol, aripiprazole, cariprazine, and trazodone) acted primarily on the DHCR7 enzyme. The result of this exposure was an increase in 7-dehydrocholesterol in neurons and astrocytes to levels that were comparable to those found in cultured neurons and astrocytes from transgenic mice that carried a Dhcr7 pathogenic mutation modeling the neurodevelopmental disorder Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome.

Patient demographics, comorbidities, and baseline quality of life (QOL) are major contributors to postoperative outcomes. The frequency and cost of lumbar spine surgery has been increasing, with controversy revolving around optimal management strategies and outcome predictors. The goal of this study was to generate predictive nomograms and a clinical calculator for postoperative clinical and QOL outcomes following lumbar spine surgery for degenerative disease.

Patients undergoing lumbar spine surgery for degenerative disease at a single tertiary care institution between June 2009 and December 2012 were retrospectively reviewed. Nomograms and an online calculator were modeled based on patient demographics, comorbidities, presenting symptoms and duration of symptoms, indication for surgery, type and levels of surgery, and baseline preoperative QOL scores. Outcomes included postoperative emergency department (ED) visit or readmission within 30 days, reoperation within 90 days, and 1-year changes in the EuroQstoperative outcome. SU11274 in vivo They may also aid physicians in surgical planning, referrals, and counseling to ultimately lead to improved patient experience and outcomes.

The prediction tools derived from this study constitute important adjuncts to clinical decision-making that can offer patients undergoing lumbar spine surgery realistic and personalized expectations of postoperative outcome. They may also aid physicians in surgical planning, referrals, and counseling to ultimately lead to improved patient experience and outcomes. The purpose of the work is to highlight the scientific, clinical, pedagogical and social activities of a famous dentist, Professor Leonid Matveevich Perzashkevich in connection with the 100th anniversary of his birth. In dental implantology the treatment planning is the most important item for surgery success as well as for functionality and aesthetics of denture. The current problem is to determine the implant position intraoperatively. On dental market there are many companies offering the different variants of navigation surgery, including surgical guides. The purpose of this study is to create universal classification of surgical guide application for dental implantation based on clinical setting and the individual anatomy of the patient which simplifies the medical activities and predictably performs the treatment protocol. The purpose of the study was to analyze the types and volumes of treatment and prophylactic services provided to the adult population with infectious diseases in the dental office of a multidisciplinary hospital.

The types and volumes of dental care provided to the adult population with infectious diseases in a multidisciplinary hospital have been analyzed.

The study showed that dentists use 49 types of services when treating adults with infectious diseases, which corresponds to 29.88% of the compulsory medical insurance classifier in Moscow. Provided services can be conditionally divided into 4 groups consultation, diagnostic, preventive and medicinal manipulations. The share of consulting services corresponds to 18.16±0.41% of the total volume of services provided; on average patients made 320.8 visits to the dentist's doctors per year, which corresponds to 2.38 visits for each patient. The proportion of medicinal manipulations, diagnostic and preventive services corresponds to 68.64±0.49%, 7.02±0.27% and 6.17±0.26%, respectively. Services related to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the oral mucosa and salivary glands dominate with 69.3%, on average 5.51 services are provided per visit.

The compulsory medical insurance program for the city of Moscow should provide services for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of dental diseases, provided by doctors specializing in «dentistry», for patients with infectious diseases who are undergoing treatment in inpatient conditions.
