Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

Bedside cots, also referred to as bassinets or co-sleepers are designed to allow parents to rest close to their infants at night without the risk of SIDS. However they are not suggested for use until 6 months of age when your baby is required to move into a cot, or a moses basket.

Mehack is an MFM home tester, loved the feature that this model comes with a bassinet that can be used all around the house. It also comes with a manual rocking feature. It was also easy to put together and came in its own travel bag for convenient storage.

Size

Cots are smaller than cots. They are less than. Cots can also convert into toddler beds. However they are typically intended for children who are the age of three. If you're opting for a wooden cot, you'll find two sizes available - standard and large - both of which convert into a cot bed/toddler bed. The larger of the two is a good idea for children who want to sleep in it until they are approximately three.

MFM mom home test Jasmine was pleased that this bedside cot was slightly bigger than a Moses basket, but not too large for her baby's room. It's easy to lift her baby in and out for night feeding or soothing, and that the quality is excellent in comparison to other cots she's seen that are flimsy.

Another home-based test subject, Emily, likes how the Maxi-Cosi Lora can be used in a variety of ways - it's a lift-off bassinet that you can move around the house, and it rocks too. It also has an incline of reflux as well as a machine washable liner that breathes. cotsfortots was also shortlisted for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot or Moses Basket category. Unlike some International or European cot brands, the Lora can fit South African cot mattresses so you don't need to purchase an entirely new mattress each time your baby grows. It does require a special bedding set (60x120cm). You can find the perfect mattress for your cot here.

Height

When you are choosing a cot for your bed be sure to choose one that can be raised to a height that's comfortable for you when feeding babies. It should also be able to be lowered away from the way, so you can lift up your child towards you to feed them at night or comfort him. This feature is particularly helpful when you are recovering from a C section. The Next2me cot and the Tutti Bambini can be adjusted to the maximum height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 can go up to 63cm and the Knuma Hutch up to 70cm.

Another thing to consider is the height you would like to set for the base of your cot. Some moms find it is easier to lift their babies from standard Moses baskets if the base is at the lowest point and others prefer a higher level to give them greater stability. The Joie Roomie Glide is a popular choice and one of our mom testers saying that it has an easy-to-use collapsible side that is easy to press down at the touch of the button.

Be aware that a bassinet/bedside sleeping device is only suitable until your baby is able to hold their head up unaided, usually at approximately 6 months. This is due to the risk of inhaling suffocation. You should also be aware that when your child is old enough to turn the bedside sleeper into a cot you will have to remove the sides when they are ready to do this. This will prevent them from falling out or climbing out of bed.

Design

There are a variety of bedside crib that range from basic to extravagant. The more luxurious options may include features such as a built-in nightlight or a soothing center that plays music and sounds and comes with two levels of vibration to help soothe your baby back to sleep, or a swivelling base that allows you to get your baby's food in the right place. Certain models can be converted into a toddler bed or cot (or both) when your child is ready to go to their own bed.

For example, the Tutti Bambini CoZee Air that won Bronze in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket category, has a swivelling base that allows you to pick up your newborn and transfer them from one side of the crib to the other without needing to get up. This is ideal for new mums who are recovering from Caesarean births or who require a the bed for extended durations of time. Jasmine is an MFM mother who tested the product at home, stated that it was easy to operate and made it easier to reach her baby - especially after the c-section.

Another alternative is the Chicco Next2me Magic, which was awarded Gold at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the category of the Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket. It comes with a machine-washable liner, reflux incline, and rocking function. It's bigger than other cribs for bed that we've tested, but it folds down into its travel bag, making it compact when not in use.

Leya, MFM mum home tester also acknowledged the crib's usefulness. She said it was designed for parents and infants. It is easy to move and super-sturdy. She said that the bassinet's swivelling base was brilliant because it let you move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lowered to facilitate access for mothers who are recovering from C-sections.

Safety

The most important security feature of a large bedside cot is that it can be easily raised or lowered to enable parents to reach their baby when they need to feed, comfort them or change their nappy. This means that it's ideal for new mothers who may still recovering from a C-section. You should look for the design that allows you to lower the sides of the bed with a simple button press. This allows you to lift your child up without getting out of the bed. This is especially important as your baby grows older and more mobile. It is also important to not add anything to the cot that increases the chance of suffocation or injury, like duvets and pillows, which could cause babies to become overheated.

The NPR of the CPSC's NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to problems with the product that included gaps between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents) and enclosed openings with fabric sides (11 incidents) as well as consumer misassembly, or missing components (6 incidents) and other miscellaneous product-related issues (9 incidents).

In its NPR the CPSC considered the possibility of introducing additional requirements to bedside sleepers. For instance the products would need to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets, or at least the maximum height requirements for the rail that is lowered. However, the CPSC determined that these requirements would not be practical or effective in reducing the number of incidents where infants were entrapped between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed.

The majority of the reported incidents in the NPR involved multiuse bedside sleepers that can be converted to other modes such as play yards and bassinets. Several commenters suggested that the CPSC include in the proposed rule an alternative option for multiuse bedside sleepers to allow them to meet the minimum side-height requirement of bassinets using a removable attachment that can be permanently connected or disconnected when the item is not being used as a bassinet.

The CPSC is examining the comments and other suggestions received in response to the NPR on bedside sleeping. The Commission will be examining these comments when it decides on the final rule, which is expected to be published in November of 2021.
