Cortisol-to-cortisone ratio and cortisol were positively associated with perceived stress (% change 2.33, P
=0.003; and 4.74, P
=0.001, respectively), but were not significantly associated with depressive symptoms. Further, the relationship between cortisol-to-cortisone ratio and perceived stress was modified by cortisol level and sex the positive association between perceived stress and the cortisol-to-cortisone ratio was more evident in subjects with lower cortisol levels (P
=0.009) and in men (P
=0.026).
These findings suggest that the cortisol-to-cortisone ratio in spot urine may be a useful marker for non-acute perceived stress in daily life against a possible background of reduced 11β-HSD2 in older adults.

In Europe, hedgehogs have been found infected with tick-transmitted Anaplasma phagocytophilum and A. marginale. In this study blood and ticks collected from 53 long-eared hedgehogs (Hemiechinus auritus) living in southeastern Iran close to Afghanistan and Pakistan borders were examined for Anaplasma spp. infection using microscopical and molecular biology methods. At microscopical examination Anaplasma-like inclusion bodies were found at the margin of erythrocytes in the blood smear of one infected hedgehog (prevalence 1.9 %). Each hedgehog was infested with three to eight adult ticks (average 4.7 ± 1.5). On the body of hedgehogs, the ears were the main site for attachment of ticks. Out of 248 collected adult ticks 81.4 % were Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato and 18.5 % were R. turanicus. PCR and sequencing showed the presence of A. marginale infection in the blood of two hedgehogs (3.8 %) and R. turanicus ticks collected from them. This is the first report of A. marginale infection in hedgehogs in Iran. Epidemiological importance of this finding is discussed and current knowledge on the tick fauna of hedgehogs in the country is reviewed. We live in a rich, three dimensional world with complex arrangements of meaningful objects. For decades, however, theories of visual attention and perception have been based on findings generated from lines and color patches. While these theories have been indispensable for our field, the time has come to move on from this rather impoverished view of the world and (at least try to) get closer to the real thing. After all, our visual environment consists of objects that we not only look at, but constantly interact with. Having incorporated the meaning and structure of scenes, i.e. its "grammar", then allows us to easily understand objects and scenes we have never encountered before. Studying this grammar provides us with the fascinating opportunity to gain new insights into the complex workings of attention, perception, and cognition. In this review, I will discuss how the meaning and the complex, yet predictive structure of real-world scenes influence attention allocation, search, and object identification.Marine heterotrophic prokaryotes degrade, transform, and utilize half of the organic matter (OM) produced by photosynthesis, either in dissolved or particulate form. Microbial metabolic rates are affected by a plethora of different factors, spanning from environmental variables to OM composition. To tease apart the environmental drivers underlying the observed organic matter utilization rates, we analysed a 21 year-long time series from the Gulf of Trieste (NE Adriatic Sea). Heterotrophic carbon production (HCP) time series analysis highlighted a long-term structure made up by three periods of coherent observations (1999-2007; 2008-2011; 2012-2019), shared also by OM concentration time series. Temporal patterns of HCP drivers, extracted with a random forest approach, demonstrated that a period of high salinity anomalies (2002-2008) was the main driver of this structure. The reduced river runoff and the consequent depletion of river-borne inorganic nutrients induced a long-term Chl a decline (2006-2009), follo may help to explain present and future changes. The spring blooms of phytoplankton play a key role in the functioning of marine ecosystems in the polar regions. A spring bloom in the Subarctic White Sea was observed in order to determine the effect of ice cover on the distribution, composition, and temporal changes of phytoplankton communities. selleck kinase inhibitor The obtained results clearly show that in the White Sea, as in other freezing Arctic seas, ice melting and ice removal both play an essential role in the onset and development of spring phytoplankton blooms. This facilitates the release of ice algae and ice-pelagic algae into the water, as well as the rapid development of true planktonic taxa within the euphotic zone. One major peak of algal biomass is associated with ice removal while the other is recorded in the early summer. Comparison of our results with earlier data from 1960s to 1990s indicated strong year-to-year variation in terms of ice removal, the onset of the spring bloom, and the abundance and composition of the dominant phytoplankton taxa.
Qiliqiangxin Capsule (QLQX), a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) prescription, is especially used for clinical treatment of chronic heart failure (CHF) in China. However, the holistic quality control of QLQX has not been well established due to lack of system research on the quality marker (Q-marker).
In this study, a new strategy of multi-dimensional "radar chart" mode was proposed to overcome the problem that traditional methods cannot evaluate the multiple properties of Q-markers comprehensively and visually, and the strategy was successfully applied to discover the Q-markers of QLQX.
First, nineteen prototypes that entered the in vivo systemic circulation were selected out as the candidate Q-markers based on our previous studies of chemical and in vivo metabolic profiles. Then, their contents in QLQX were quantitatively analyzed by UHPLC-MS/MS, and the bioactivities on the H9c2 cardiomyocytes cell model was evaluated. The network of in vivo component-target closely related to CHF was further constructed.
