The present study aimed to assess the concurrent validity of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) core set to classify physical health of older adults in relation to the self-rated health.

This is a methodological study conducted in Santa Cruz, Rio Grande do Norte (RN) state, in Northeastern Brazil, with 101 community-dwelling older adults. The participants rated their health status, which was classified into 3 groups very good, fair, and poor/very poor. An interview was then conducted using self-reported and objective measurements to classify physical health according to the ICF core set. It consists of 30 categories, 14 of which belong to the body function (b) component, 4 to body structures (s), 9 to activities and participation (d), and 3 related to environmental factors (e). To analyze the compromised and problematic categories in the ICF, an impairment index was created for each component. The relationship between self-rated health and the impairment indexes wealth in the older adults.

The importance of precisely understanding the pathoanatomy of acetabular dysplasia prior to surgical treatment has long been recognized. Acetabuloplasties for neuromuscular hip dysplasia have typically aimed to improve the acetabulum by increasing posterior-superior coverage, as previous three-dimensional (3-D) computed tomography (CT) studies have shown that acetabular dysplasia in neuromuscular hips is primarily in the direction of posterior-superior subluxation or dislocation. The purpose of this study was to identify differences in 3-D morphology between normal hips and dysplastic neuromuscular hips, specifically to identify areas of acetabular deficiency to guide preoperative decision-making.

Patients treated for neuromuscular hip dysplasia at a single institution between 2009 and 2017 with a preoperative high-resolution pelvic CT scan (28 hips) were evaluated with custom software to measure acetabular morphology. Acetabuli were divided into equal octants; coverage angles were measured for each octant of interest. Variables were compared with age- and sex-matched normal controls (56 hips).

We found a wide range of hip pathology in our study cohort. Five hips had no sectors with abnormal coverage. One hip (4%) was overcovered anteriorly. The remaining pathology was undercoverage located anteriorly [n = 7 (25%)], superiorly [n = 6 (21%)], posteriorly [n = 4 (14%)] or globally [n = 5 (18%)].

Our findings indicate that individual patients with neuromuscular acetabular dysplasia have unique deformities that do not uniformly conform to a specific area of acetabular deficiency. It is imperative to define the specific 3-D acetabular deficiency location and magnitude for accurate preoperative planning.

Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (LCPD) and Blount's disease share a similar presenting age in addition to similar symptoms such as limp or knee pain. A little overlap is mentioned about both diseases. We sought to present cases of children having both conditions to discuss the implications of this co-occurrence on diagnosis and management.

After institutional review board approval, we retrospectively reviewed records of four children who developed both Blount's disease and LCPD. Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (LCPD) is a juvenile hip disorder associated with residual femoral head deformity, cartilage degeneration and a high risk of early onset hip osteoarthritis. Assessing management of LCPD in the healed phase requires an understanding of when and where hip cartilage damage happens. While it has been shown that cartilage is degenerated in healed LCPD hips in adults, it is not clear when this degeneration begins. Our research question was Are the MR markers of cartilage degeneration T1ρ and T2 increased in healed LCPD hips in adolescents?

Twelve adolescents [10-17 years old (mean 14); 3 female 9 male] with healed LCPD (Stulberg 2-5; 8 unilateral and 4 bilateral) and 15 age- and sex-matched controls were imaged in a 3T MRI using a T1ρ and a T2 sequence. We applied a mixed-effects model adjusted for age and nested by subject to determine the effect of Stulberg grade on overall and regional mean T1ρ and T2 values.

T1ρ was significantly higher overall and in the medial region of Stulberg ≥3 hips, and in the medial region of Stulberg 2 hips than in the control group.
