rtance of their consistent use among healthcare and medical students.

The contest provided a framework for the creation of innovative and potentially effective educational tools via an engaging approach that leveraged student creativity. Given the need to improve compliance rates, this study suggests that new ways can be advantageously explored to teach hand hygiene procedures and increase awareness of the importance of their consistent use among healthcare and medical students. The contamination of air-handling units is a widespread phenomenon in buildings with air-conditioning systems, including hospitals. The germicide capacity of UV-C rays is known and, in the air-conditioning apparatuses, the UV-C lamps are generally located inside the air ducts. Aim of the paper is to evaluate the effectiveness of UV-C lamps when they are differently placed, i.e. in a position to directly irradiate the HEPA filters surface. We built ad hoc experimental air-conditioning systems, with HEPA filters and UV-C lamps in the two described positions. The results obtained demonstrate that, for disinfection purpose, the direct irradiation of the HEPA filters by UV-C provides better results than irradiation of the air stream and the effectiveness increases when lowering the relative humidity of the air. The survival curves of the tested microorganisms (fungi) show typical tail shaped curves (two steps survival curves). Additional tests using both HEPA filters alone, and HEPA filters plus UV lamps, have been performed measuring the air pressure drop between entrance and exit the HEPA filters and collecting air samples in order to obtain total microbial and fungal count. The results obtained suggest that, at least in experimental conditions described, the radiation on filter surface reduces significantly the microbial load and the pressure drop through the filter, compared to a situation of not-irradiated HEPA filters.Low carbohydrate diets (LCD) may help body weight loss and glycemic control in diabetes but their long-term consequences are not known. The aim of this review is to highlight the contrast between the potential benefits of short term LCD and the adverse health effects of long-term consumption of LCD. LCD can enhance weight loss in the short term although its effect is small and not sustainable. In people with diabetes and insulin resistance, LCD is helpful in achieving glycemic control. PF562271 However, there are untoward side effects especially when carbohydrates are severely restricted ( 70% energy from carbohydrate) are associated with increased mortality. The available scientific evidence supports the current dietary recommendations to replace highly processed carbohydrates with unprocessed carbohydrates as well as limiting added sugars in the diet.

Concurrent Training (CT) is described as a combination of resistance training (RT) and endurance training (ET) in a periodized program to maximize all aspects of physical performance. To date, effects of CT order on muscular and cardiorespiratory fitness adaptations are controversial. Owing to the age-related decrement in satellite cells (SC) which are critical for fiber repair, conservation, muscle hypertrophy as well as cardiorespiratory fitness, the present study examined the response of SC related markers to CT order in older sarcopenic men.

Thirty older men (age= 64.3 ± 3.5 years) were randomly assigned into one of 3 groups, ET followed by RT (E+R; n=10), RT followed by ET (R+E; n= 10) or a control (C; n=10).

The training protocol consisted of 3 exercise sessions per week for 8 weeks. Blood samples were obtained at baseline and 48 hours after the final training session.

Weight, skeletal muscle mass, lower and upper body power, maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max), Paired Box 7 (Pax7), and Myogenic2max in older sarcopenic participants, regardless of the order of RT and ET. However, performing ET before RT may be more effective at enhancing skeletal muscle mass, Myf5 and Pax7, in addition to both lower and upper body power. While both CT programs produced notable physiological and performance benefits, performing ET before RT during CT may provide the greatest therapeutic benefits for aging individuals.

To explore the risk factors for stroke by using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).

A total of 19384 cases from the NHANES database during 2005 to 2016 were included in this study, of which 661 were stroke patients, with a weighted prevalence of 2.60%. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to analyze possible risk factors for stroke.

The risk of stroke was 1.839 times higher in subjects with diabetes than in those without diabetes, P<0.001. An average increase of 1 ug/dL in blood lead was associated with a 1.082-fold increase in stroke risk, P<0.001. Subjects with mild-, moderate-, and moderately severe or severe depression had a 1.567-fold, 1.836-fold, and 3.279-fold higher risk than those without depression respectively, P<0.001. The risk of stroke in subjects with sleep disorders was 1.622 times higher than those without sleep disorders, P<0.001.

Patients with diabetes, lower household income (<$2000), PHQ-9 depression score (5-27), trouble sleep, older age and higher concentration of blood lead are associated with a higher risk of stroke.

Sarcopenia is a debilitating condition affecting millions of individuals worldwide and is defined with different criteria. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of sarcopenia in older Canadians using three internationally accepted criteria.

Observational cohort study.

Data from 12,592 subjects [6,314 males (50.1%), 6,278 females (49.9%)] ≥65 years old in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging were included.

Appendicular lean mass (ALM; kg) and appendicular lean mass index (ALM kg/height in m2) were collected from dual X-ray absorptiometry measurements. Physical performance was assessed using the 4-m gait speed test, and muscle strength was measured by hand dynamometry. Sarcopenia was defined according to criteria put forth by the International Working Group on Sarcopenia (IWGS), Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) Sarcopenia Project, and revised European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP). Positive and negative percent agreements and Cohen's kappa (κ) described the agreement among sarcopenia definitions.
