We investigate the optical wavelength dependence of the photoacoustic (PA) signal, detected with bandwidth (BW) in the MHz range, of gold nanospheres (NSs) immersed in water upon illumination with ns laser pulses. We compare the wavelength dependence of the PA signal (within the MHz BW) with the one of the optical absorption coefficient as determined from optical transmission measurements. Thermal boundary conductance (TBC) at the gold-water interface is taken into account, as well as the temperature dependence of the thermal expansion coefficient of water. The effects of NS size and laser pulse duration on the PA signal are also explored. The PA signal is investigated with an opto-thermo-acoustic model considering light absorption in gold NS and in a surrounding water shell.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of Xuanfei Baidu Decoction (XBD) combined with conventional drug therapy compared with conventional medicine alone in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Forty-two patients with COVID-19 were randomly assigned to XBD plus conventional medicine (n=22) and conventional medicine alone (n=20). Both groups were treated for 1 week. The primary endpoint was the disappearance rate of main symptoms (fever, cough, and fatigue).

Compared with the conventional medicine, the disappearance rate of clinical symptoms such as fever, cough, fatigue and loss of appetite in the experimental group were significantly reduced (P<0.05). The number of white blood cells and lymphocytes in the experimental group increased significantly (P<0.05), which all returned to normal parameters. Meanwhile, the C-reactive protein and erythrocyte sedimentation rate in the experimental group were significantly reduced (P<0.05).

XBD combined with conventional medicine may significantly improve patient's clinical symptoms, increase the number of white blood cells and lymphocytes to improve immunity, and also significantly reduce C-reactive protein and erythrocyte sedimentation rate to play an anti-inflammatory effect. However, it needs to be confirmed by a large sample study.

With increasing burden of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCD), ageing becomes a global public health concern, and the World Health Organization Western Pacific Region has no exception. To address the NCD challenge, priority should be given to promote healthy ageing across the life-course. As traditional and complementary medicine (T&CM) is popular within the Region, it is of policy interest to explore possibilities of applying T&CM for promoting healthy ageing.

We first summarized sources of clinical evidence supporting the use of T&CM. We then searched publications through MEDLINE from its inception to April 2020 to identify studies focusing on the perception of T&CM among older people. Finally, taking current evidence base and patient choice into account, we generated policy recommendations for of integrating T&CM into health systems.

Experiences from countries with different income levels suggested that promoting evidence-based T&CM as self-care modalities would be the mosroval, to improve standards and protect patients could be a priority.A 47-year-old male with morbid obesity and progressive pulmonary fibrosis was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) with worsening hypoxia and nocturnal ventilator dependence. Selleckchem Takinib Due to a significant oxygen requirement, the patient could only safely remain in an acute care setting. Unfortunately, he was not eligible for lung transplantation due to having obesity, a relative contraindication to lung transplantation due to potential for post transplantation complications and increased mortality. Therefore, we treated the patient with a modified very low calorie diet (MVLCD) to achieve weight loss. He had successful, sustained weight loss over a period of seven weeks and reached a target weight that made him eligible for transplantation. He subsequently underwent successful bilateral lung transplantation. The patient had improved metabolic parameters and no side effects attributable to the reduced calorie diet. This report shows that in patients with end stage lung disease and a poor prognosis without transplantation, inpatient weight loss is safe and may allow for potentially lifesaving lung transplantation.

Sarcoidosis and breast cancer co-incidence is reported in the literature in the form of case reports.

To describe our experience from a single large sarcoidosis clinic.

Retrospective chart review of 1000 sarcoidosis cases seen in our clinic from 2003 to 2008.

429/1000 female sarcoidosis cases were identified. Among them 20/429 had a history of sarcoidosis and breast cancer. In 12/20 breast cancer preceded sarcoidosis by 52 months, in 4/20 sarcoidosis preceded breast cancer by 200 months and in 4/20 they presented concurrently. Mean age of sarcoidosis diagnosis was 53.9 (±12.4) years. Majority were of European decent (16/20), 3 were African-Americans and 1 Asian. Scadding radiography stages distribution was (n) 4/11/3/2/0 for stages 0/I/II/III/IV respectively. They had 3.4 (±1.3) organs involved, mainly with intrathoracic involvement. 10/20 were asymptomatic and 11/20 received chronic treatment. Compared to 409 cases of sarcoidosis sine breast cancer (mean age 46.7±13.1), sarcoidosis-breast cancer cases had sarcoidosis diagnosed at a significantly later age (p=0.01). Histological diagnosis applied in all co-incidence cases, in 5 via mediastinoscopy.

Older females with breast cancer may develop sarcoidosis, with features indistinguishable from stand-alone sarcoidosis. When sarcoidosis is suspected histological diagnosis is mandatory.

Patient presented to the emergency department complaining of low-grade fever, increased sputum production, progressive dyspnea and weight loss. High-resolution computed tomography scan showed multifocal bronchiectasis with multiple small nodules. Bronchoalveolar lavage culture was positive for Mycobacterium intracellulare. Antimicrobial treatment was started which improved respiratory symptoms. One month after the initiation of antibiotics, cyclophosphamide therapy was started with adequate tolerance.
