The rapid eschar removal by surgical debridement is currently considered the standard of care for the treatment of burned patients. However, the excision of viable dermal residues can frequently occurs when this procedure is applied affecting, in turn, the possible spontaneous re-epithelialization of the lesion area and increasing the amount of autologous skin grafts required for its treatment. To overcome these problems, the use of enzymatic debridement by proteolytic enzymes enriched in Bromelain has aroused great interest in the clinical field as a valid alternative to surgical procedure for the treatment of burns when they appear of in-determinate depth. With the aim to evaluate the effectiveness of this new approach in comparison with surgical procedure for the treatment of these type of burns we performed a retrospective data analysis taking into account patients hospitalized in our Burns Center from 2014 to 2017. The results obtained show a significant reduction in the time frame to perform debridement when enzymatic approach is chosen, with the maintenance of viable dermal tissue on the superficial areas of the wounds, their spontaneous re-epithelialization and a reduction of the bleeding in the treated patients. A reduced amount of autologous skin grafts is also used when enzymatic treatment is applied. The length of stay of the patients treated with enzymatic debridement did not show significant differences compared to that treated with surgery, with excellent aesthetic results after 1-3 years. © The Author(s) 2020. Therefore, it is essential to identify in utero exposure to tobacco, being meconium the matrix of choice for this purpose. METHODS Meconium (n = 565) was analyzed for nicotine, cotinine and hydroxycotinine by LC-MS-MS. Then, tobacco meconium results were compared with smoking habits during pregnancy and neonatal outcomes measures (birth weight, length, head circumference, gestational age and Apgar scores). RESULTS Although meconium analysis increased identification of in-utero exposure to tobacco (17.7% meconium positive specimens vs 13.5% mothers admitting tobacco use during pregnancy), there was a statistically significant relationship between meconium results and interview answers (P  less then  0.001). Birth weight was significantly lower for newborns with meconium positive results in males (P = 0.023) and females (P = 0.001), while for length significance was only observed in females (P = 0.001); however, when excluding meconium specimens positive for other drugs, a statistically significant difference was only found for female weight (P = 0.045). CONCLUSION Meconium analysis proved to be more reliable for tobacco prenatal exposure detection than maternal interview. In addition, positive meconium results increased the probability for low birth weight, especially in females. © The Author(s) 2020. Published by Oxford University Press. All rights reserved. We aimed to assess if also self-reported hypertension onset age is associated with hypertension-mediated organ damage (HMOD). Additionally, we evaluated the agreement between self-reported and objectively defined hypertension onset age. METHODS We studied 2649 participants (50±4 years at the time of outcome assessment, 57% women) of the CARDIA study who underwent measurements for echocardiographic left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD), coronary calcification and albuminuria. We divided the participants into groups according to self-reported hypertension onset age ( less then 35 years, 35-44 years, ≥45 years, and no hypertension). We used multivariable-adjusted logistic regression models to assess the relation between self-reported hypertension onset age with presence of HMOD, with those who did not report hypertension as the referent group. RESULTS Compared with individuals without self-reported hypertension, self-reported hypertension onset at less then 35 years was associated with LVH (odds ratio [OR], 2.38; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.51-3.76), LVDD (OR, 2.32; 95% CI, 1.28-4.18, coronary calcification (OR, 2.87; 95% CI, 1.50-5.47), and albuminuria (OR, 1.62; 95% CI, 0.81-3.26). Self-reported hypertension onset at ≥45 years was only associated with LVDD (OR, 1.81; 95% CI, 1.06-3.08). The agreement between self-reported and objectively defined hypertension onset age groups was 78-79%. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that self-reported hypertension onset age, a pragmatically feasible assessment in clinical practice, is a reasonable method for assessing risk of HMOD and cardiovascular disease. © The Author(s) 2020. Ant pollination is a rare mutualistic association and reports of ants as effective pollinators are limited to a few studies. Conospermum (Proteaceae) is an insect-pollinated genus well represented in the south-western Australia biodiversity hotspot, and here we aimed to evaluate the role of ants as pollinators of C. undulatum. METHODS Pollen germination after contact with several species of ants and bees was tested for C. selleck chemicals llc undulatum and five co-flowering species for comparison. We then sampled the pollen load of floral visitors of C. undulatum to assess whether ants carried a pollen load sufficient to enable pollination. Lastly, we performed exclusion treatments to assess the relative effect of flying- and non-flying-invertebrate floral visitors on the reproduction of C. undulatum. For this, we measured the seed set under different conditions ants exclusion, flying-insects exclusion and control.
