Climate change manifestation in the ocean, through warming, oxygen loss, increasing acidification and changing particulate organic carbon flux (one metric of altered food supplies), is projected to affect most deep-ocean ecosystems concomitantly with increasing direct human disturbance. Climate drivers will alter deep-sea biodiversity and associated ecosystem services, and may interact with disturbance from resource extraction activities or even climate geoengineering. We suggest that to ensure the effective management of increasing use of the deep ocean (e.g., for bottom fishing, oil and gas extraction, and deep-seabed mining), environmental management and developing regulations must consider climate change. Strategic planning, impact assessment and monitoring, spatial management, application of the precautionary approach and full-cost accounting of extraction activities should embrace climate consciousness. Coupled climate and biological modeling approaches applied in the water and on the seafloor can help of mining. However, achieving deep-ocean sustainability under the UN Sustainable Development Goals will require integration of climate consideration across all policy sectors.The male and female external genital regions are anatomical areas in which various types of skin disorders may occur. NSD duplication is associated with short stature, microcephaly, intellectual disability, and behavioral defects in humans. Ectopic overexpression of NSD, an NSD1 homolog in Drosophila, was shown to induce developmental abnormalities via apoptosis. In this study, to investigate the effects of NSD overexpression on Drosophila brain development, we first examined the typical NSD expression pattern in larval brains and found that endogenous NSD promoter activity was detected only in subsets of glial cells. Pan-glial, but not pan-neuronal, NSD overexpression induced apoptosis in larval brain cells. However, pan-glial NSD overexpression also induced caspase-3 cleavage in neuronal cells. Among the various glial cell types, NSD overexpression in only astrocytic glia induced apoptosis and abnormal learning defects in the larval stage. Furthermore, NSD overexpression downregulated the expression of various astrocyte-specific genes, including draper (drpr), possibly owing to an indirect effect of NSD overexpression-induced astrocytic apoptosis. Since drpr plays a role in axon pruning during mushroom body (MB) formation in Drosophila astrocytes, we examined the effect of astrocytic NSD overexpression on this process and found that it disrupted the clearance of γ-neurons in the MB, subsequently inducing arrhythmic locomotor activity of the fly. Thus, these results suggest that aberrant NSD overexpression may cause neurodevelopmental disorders by interfering with crucial functions of astrocytes in the brain, underlining the importance of the tightly controlled astrocytic NSD expression for proper neurodevelopment.Aim To identify determinants and outcomes of 4-year trajectories of anxiety symptoms in a community-based cohort with type 2 diabetes. Methods Some 1091 participants in the Fremantle Diabetes Study-Phase II with type 2 diabetes completed the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale at baseline and biennially for 4 years, in addition to psychological, biomedical and self-management measures. Latent growth mixture modelling identified trajectories of anxiety symptom severity, and regression models determined predictors of trajectory membership and associated outcomes. Results Two distinct groups of participants were identified those with continuously low-no anxiety symptoms (87%) and those with improving but consistently high anxiety symptoms (elevated anxiety; 13%). Higher HbA1c and BMI, macrovascular complications and a history of generalized anxiety and/or major depressive disorder increased the risk of elevated anxiety. Elevated anxiety did not predict change in health-related outcomes over time. Elevated anxiety and depression symptoms were highly comorbid and those with both displayed the most persistent anxiety symptoms. Conclusions A subgroup of individuals with type 2 diabetes are at risk of persistently elevated anxiety symptoms. Routine monitoring of the severity of psychological symptoms over time in this population should facilitate earlier and more intensive mood management.Background/objectives Delirium is a common neurobehavioral complication in hospitalized patients with a high prevalence in various clinical settings. Participants We included a study if it was a randomized controlled trial and was evaluating effects of coordinated non-pharmacologic multicomponent interventions in the prevention of delirium. Measurements We performed a systematic literature search in PubMed and CENTRAL (PROSPERO CRD42019138981; last update May 24, 2019). We assessed the quality of included studies by using the criteria established by the Cochrane Collaboration. We extracted the measured outcomes for delirium incidence, duration of delirium, length of hospital stay, falls during hospital stay, discharge to institutional care, and inpatient mortality.
