OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of educational technologies for cardiovascular health promotion in children. METHODS A systematic review was carried out through a search in Biblioteca Virtual de Saúde, Comissão de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal do Nível Superior, EBSCOHot Information Services, and US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health databases, using the descriptors play and plaything, cardiovascular diseases, child, and health promotion, between 2012 and 2019. RESULTS Eight articles were selected for this review. The identified technologies were based on low-tech interventions, such as play workshops, using tools such as CARDIOKIDS, the SI! program, MOVI-2, and activities with wide-ranging digital tools such as Fooya!, Fit2PlayTM, and the exergame cycling program. CONCLUSIONS It is noteworthy that all of the analyzed interventions were effective and those that involved playing were better accepted by the children. We tested the novel hypothesis that the dehumanization of prisoners varies as a function of how soon they will be released from prison. Seven studies indicate that people ascribe soon-to-be-released prisoners greater mental sophistication than those with more time to serve, all other things being equal. Studies 3 to 6 indicate that these effects are mediated by perceptions that imprisonment has served the functions of rehabilitation, retribution, and future deterrence. Finally, Study 7 demonstrates that beliefs about rehabilitation and deterrence may be the most important in accounting for these effects. These findings indicate that the amount of time left on a prison sentence influences mind ascription to the incarcerated, an effect that has implications for our understanding of prisoner dehumanization. Background Dickkopf-1 and sclerostin have been implicated in atherosclerosis and vascular calcification. We aimed to quantify the association of their serum levels with incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the general population. Methods and Results Among 706 participants of the prospective, population-based Bruneck Study, mean±SD of serum levels were 44.5±14.7 pmol/L for dickkopf-1 and 47.1±17.5 pmol/L for sclerostin. The primary outcome was a composite CVD end point composed of ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke, transient ischemic attack, myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, peripheral vascular disease, and revascularization procedures. selleck Over a median follow-up duration of 15.6 years, 179 CVD events occurred. For the primary CVD outcome, multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) per SD higher level were 1.20 for dickkopf-1 (95% CI, 1.02-1.42; P=0.028) and 0.92 for sclerostin (95% CI, 0.78-1.08; P=0.286). Secondary outcome analyses revealed that the association of dickkopf-1 was primarily driven by ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke (67 events; HR, 1.37; 95% CI, 1.06-1.78; P=0.017), whereas no increase in risk was observed for transient ischemic attack (22 events; HR, 0.87; 95% CI, 0.53-1.44; P=0.593), myocardial infarction (45 events; HR, 1.10; 95% CI, 0.78-1.54; P=0.598), or for other CVD (45 events; HR, 1.25; 95% CI, 0.88-1.76; P=0.209). Conclusions In this prospective, population-based study, elevated baseline levels of dickkopf-1, but not sclerostin, were independently associated with incident cardiovascular events, which was mainly driven by stroke. Our findings support the hypothesis of a role of dickkopf-1 in the pathogenesis of CVD.Background People with a Fontan circulation experience a range of physical, psychosocial and neurodevelopmental challenges alongside, or caused by, their cardiac condition, with significant consequences for health-related quality of life (HRQOL). We meta-analyzed HRQOL outcomes reported by people with a Fontan circulation or their proxies and evaluated predictors of poorer HRQOL. Methods and Results Six electronic databases were searched for peer-reviewed, English-language articles published before March 2019. Standardized mean differences (SMD) were calculated using fixed and random-effects models. Fifty articles reporting on 29 unique studies capturing HRQOL outcomes for 2793 people with a Fontan circulation and 1437 parent-proxies were analyzed. HRQOL was lower in individuals with a Fontan circulation compared with healthy referents or normative samples (SMD, -0.92; 95% CI, -1.36 to -0.48; P less then 0.001). Lower scores were reported across all HRQOL domains, with the largest differences found for physical (SMD, -0.90; 95% CI, -1.13 to -0.67; P less then 0.001) and school/work functioning (SMD, -0.71; 95% CI, -0.90 to -0.52; P less then 0.001). Meta-regression analyses found no significant predictors of self-reported physical functioning, but older age at Fontan operation was associated with poorer emotional functioning (β=-0.124; P=0.004), and diagnosis of hypoplastic left heart was associated with poorer social functioning (β=-0.007; P=0.048). Sensitivity analyses showed use of the PedsQL Core Module was associated with lower HRQOL scores compared with the Short-Form Health Survey-36. Conclusions HRQOL outcomes for people with a Fontan circulation are lower than the general population. Optimal care acknowledges the lifelong impact of the Fontan circulation on HRQOL and offers targeted strategies to improve outcomes for this growing population. The study was to evaluate the in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET) outcomes in women with diminished ovarian reserve (DOR) after pretreatment with growth hormone (GH). Retrospective propensity score matching study, which included 92 women received GH over 4 weeks pretreatment before their subsequent IVF cycles and 92 matched controls who underwent IVF cycles between July 2017 and August 2018. The evaluation parameters included ovarian response, embryological parameters, and pregnancy outcomes after embryo transfer (ET). The mean number of retrieved oocytes and transferable day-3 embryos were significantly higher after GH pretreatment. The implantation rate, clinical pregnancy rate, and ongoing pregnancy rate per fresh ET cycle were similar between the GH group and control group. In women who either achieved pregnancy or utilized all the embryos resulting from the index stimulation cycle, the cumulative clinical pregnancy rate was significantly higher in women with GH compared to the control group. 4 weeks pretreatment with GH could increase ovarian response to stimulation and then improved IVF-ET outcomes in women with DOR.
