Composting is an effective method for utilizing agricultural straw waste and livestock manure resources. Using deer manure and corn straw as raw materials, the changes in various indexes were studied during composting under different initial C/N ratios, initial moisture contents, and particle sizes of corn straw, and compost maturity was evaluated. Moisture content, total organic carbon content, and C/N ratio all declined during composting, while total nitrogen, total phosphorus, total potassium, pH, germination index, and electrical conductivity increased. The grey relational analysis method was used to evaluate maturity. The results showed that a mixture of stalk and deer manure with initial moisture content of 55%, initial C/N ratio of 301, and a straw particle size of 1.5-3.5 cm constituted the optimal experimental conditions. Taguchi analysis indicated that initial moisture content exerted the greatest influence on compost maturity, followed by initial C/N ratio and crushed straw particle size. This study provides an important reference for the utilization of compost derived from a mixture of livestock manure and straw.Vibration of the elevated urban rail transit (URT) severely affects the health of nearby residents, threatens the integrity of adjacent historic buildings, and aggravates the performance of vibration-sensitive instruments in buildings, and the accompanied annoying structure-borne noise always arouses public complaint. Vibration and noise mitigation measures through track structures and/or noise barriers are increasingly favored to deal with these challenging issues. This paper presents systematic field measurements on noise and vibrations of elevated URT. The vibration experiment covers vibration of track structures, bridge girders and piers, and ground soil under three different track structures, i.e., embedded sleeper track, ladder sleeper track, and floating slab track (FST) with rubber mats. Noise measurements were also conducted considered the effect of track structures and with or without fully enclosed noise barriers. It is shown that ladder sleeper track and FST were more effective in control bridge vibration than ground vibration. The overall vibration level of the bridge is 8~10 dB greater than the ground vibrations. The noise reduction effect through track structure was limited for far-field ground. Furthermore, it is found that the noise barrier was more effective to reduce near-field wheel/rail rolling noise rather than far-field noise. Good correlation between structure-borne noise and vibration was observed for both the embedded sleeper track and FST at the bottom slab of the box girder bridge. This paper examines whether the anomalous summer peak in deaths from coronary heart disease (CHD) in Finland could be attributed to adverse effects of the Midsummer festival and alcohol consumption during the festival. Daily deaths from CHD and alcohol poisoning in Finland, 1961-2014, that occurred during the 7 days centering on Midsummer Day were analysed in relation to deaths during 14 to 4 days before and 4 to 14 after Midsummer Day. Daily counts of deaths from CHD among persons aged 35-64 years were regressed on days around the Midsummer period by negative binomial regression. Mortality from CHD was highest on Midsummer Day (RR 1.25 (95% confidence interval 1.12-1.31), one day after the peak in deaths from alcohol poisonings. RR for CHD on Midsummer Day was particulary high (RR = 1.43; 1.09-1.86) in the 2000s, 30% of deaths being attributable to that day. In conclusion, the anomalous and prominent summer peak in deaths from CHD in Finland is an adverse consequence of the Midsummer festival. The most likely underlying reason is heavy alcohol consumption during the festival period, especially on Midsummer Eve. In the 2000s, one third of deaths from CHD on Midsummer Day are preventable. The Horizon2020 LifeCycle Project is a cross-cohort collaboration which brings together data from multiple birth cohorts from across Europe and Australia to facilitate studies on the influence of early-life exposures on later health outcomes. A major product of this collaboration has been the establishment of a FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable) data resource known as the EU Child Cohort Network. Here we focus on the EU Child Cohort Network's core variables. These are a set of basic variables, derivable by the majority of participating cohorts and frequently used as covariates or exposures in lifecourse research. First, we describe the process by which the list of core variables was established. Second, we explain the protocol according to which these variables were harmonised in order to make them interoperable. Third, we describe the catalogue developed to ensure that the network's data are findable and reusable. Finally, we describe the core data, including the proportion of variables harmonised by each cohort and the number of children for whom harmonised core data are available. EU Child Cohort Network data will be analysed using a federated analysis platform, removing the need to physically transfer data and thus making the data more accessible to researchers. The network will add value to participating cohorts by increasing statistical power and exposure heterogeneity, as well as facilitating cross-cohort comparisons, cross-validation and replication. Our aim is to motivate other cohorts to join the network and encourage the use of the EU Child Cohort Network by the wider research community.Dementia is the major predictor of death in old age. AG-270 inhibitor The aim of this paper was to determine whether 8-year mortality among 85-year olds with and without dementia, and if the contribution of dementia to mortality relative to other common diseases has changed. We used two population-based cohorts of 85-year-olds (N = 1065), born in 1901-02 and 1923-24, which were examined with identical methods in 1986-87 and 2008-2010 and followed for 8-year mortality according to data from the Swedish Tax Agency. Dementia was diagnosed according to DSM-III-R. Other diseases were diagnosed based on self-reports, close informant interviews, somatic examinations, and the Swedish National In-patient Register. Compared to cohort 1901-02, cohort 1923-24 had a lower 8-year mortality both among those with (HR 0.7; 95% CI 0.5-0.99) and without dementia (HR 0.7; 95% CI 0.5-0.9). Dementia was associated with increased mortality in both cohorts (cohort 1901-02, HR 2.6; 95% CI 2.0-3.2, cohort 1923-24, HR 2.8; 95% CI 2.3-3.5), and remained the major predictor of death, with a population attributable risk of 31.
