Hindlimb length, however, was 7% shorter in anemic fetuses. TA and FDS muscles weighed less, and FDS myofiber area was smaller in anemic fetuses compared with controls. The percentage of Pax7+ myoblasts that expressed Ki67 was lower in BF and tended to be lower in FDS from anemic fetuses indicating reduced myoblast proliferation. There was less MYOD and MYF6 mRNA expression in anemic versus control BF consistent with reduced myoblast differentiation. These results indicate that fetal anemic hypoxemia reduced muscle growth. We speculate that fetal muscle growth may be improved by strategies that increase oxygen availability.Among all the groups and occupations that have been affected by the global pandemic, nursing professionals stand out as having been particularly hard-pressed due to the dramatic increase in the need for their services. Given the rising tide of coronavirus disease 2019 patients who require specialized medical treatment as well as the millions of others that are lining up for vaccinations, it can be assumed that many nursing professionals have had to endure such things as longer working hours, tighter schedules, and the intensity of a work environment in which failure of care and multiple deaths are the daily fare. This article proposes that nurses can avoid such severe consequences by taking up a regime of enhanced self-care management that enables them to achieve psychophysical balance and wellness. Three practices are highlighted in this regard prayer, meditative walking, and the mindfulness practice of body scanning. Our suggestion is that these coping strategies will be both beneficial and healthful for nursing professionals in terms of enhancing their spiritual/existential resilience and meeting their own need for consolation as they navigate in an extremely difficult and demanding work environment.Beyond their colorful appearances and versatile geometries, flowers can self-shape-morph by adapting to environmental changes. CK-586 Nature-inspired artificial systems that mimic their natural counterparts in function, flexibility, and adaptation find an emerging application in mobile robotics. In this study, a novel reconfigurable bionic flower made of petal-shaped bistable carbon fiber-reinforced composites and actuated by soft pneumatic actuators is presented. A robotic gripper based on the bionic flower was then developed for transportation tasks. First, a bionic petal based on a hybridization of bistable composites was designed and a theoretical model was established to analyze its bistable characteristic. Second, experiments and simulations were performed to analyze the out-of-plane deformation and morphing processes of the bionic petal. Curvature analysis of the closing state and blooming state shows a good match with the theoretical results. Finally, a flower-inspired robotic gripper made of the bionic petal is demonstrated to evaluate its gripping performances, including gripping force, response time, and reliability. The functional tests confirmed that the proposed soft gripper can grip objects of various shapes, sizes, and weights within milliseconds response time. The stable gripping configuration was maintained through the bistability of the bionic petal without continuous pressure consumption. The high reliability of the gripper is very useful for gripping tasks under unstructured environments, where precise control over the robot is not possible.Deep inspiration (DI)-induced bronchodilation is the first line of defense against bronchoconstriction in healthy subjects. A hallmark of asthma is the lack of this beneficial effect of DI. The mechanism underlying the bronchodilatory effect of DI is not clear. Understanding the mechanism will help us unravel the mystery of asthma pathophysiology. It has been postulated that straining airway smooth muscle (ASM) during a DI could lead to bronchodilation and bronchoprotection. The hypothesis is currently under debate, and a central question is whether ASM is sufficiently stretched during a DI for its contractility to be compromised. Besides bronchoconstriction, another contributor to lung resistance is airway heterogeneity. The present study examines changes in airway diameter and heterogeneity at different lung volumes. Freshly explanted sheep lungs were used in plethysmographic measurements of lung resistance and elastance at different lung volumes while the airway dimensions were measured by computed tomography (CT). The change in airway diameter informed by CT measurements was applied to isolated airway ring preparations to determine the strain-induced loss of ASM contractility. We found that changing the transpulmonary pressure from 5 to 30 cmH2O led to a 51%-increase in lung volume, accompanied by a 46%-increase in the airway diameter with no change in airway heterogeneity. When comparable airway strains measured in the whole lung were applied to isolated airway rings in either relaxed or contracted state, a significant loss of ASM contractility was observed, suggesting that DI-induced bronchodilation and bronchoprotection can result from strain-induced loss of ASM contractility.Although all states have legislation pertaining to youth sports concussion, most of these laws focus on return-to-play procedures; only a few address return-to-learn (RTL) accommodations for students who have experienced a concussion. To address this gap in the legislation, some states and nongovernmental organizations have developed RTL guidelines to advise school personnel, parents, and health care providers on best practices for accommodating students' postconcussion reintegration into academic activity. In 2018, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) developed RTL guidelines which were disseminated to school nurses (SNs) at all public and nonpublic middle and high schools in the state. In 2020, the MDPH engaged the Injury Prevention Center at Boston Medical Center to survey Massachusetts SNs to assess the usefulness of the guidelines. The response rate was 63%; 92% found the booklet extremely useful or moderately useful; and 70% endorsed that the booklet fostered collaboration among stakeholders.
