Pathogenic bacteria and their metabolites are the leading risk factor in food safety and are one of the major threats to human health because of the capability of triggering diseases with high morbidity and mortality. Nano-optical sensors for bacteria sensing have been greatly explored with the emergence of nanotechnology and artificial intelligence. In addition, with the rapid development of cross fusion technology, other technologies integrated nano-optical sensors show great potential in bacterial and their metabolites sensing. This review focus on nano-optical strategies for bacteria and their metabolites sensing in the field of food safety; based on surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), fluorescence, and colorimetric biosensors, and their integration with the microfluidic platform, electrochemical platform, and nucleic acid amplification platform in the recent three years. Compared with the traditional techniques, nano optical-based sensors have greatly improved the sensitivity with reduced detection time and cost. However, challenges remain for the simple fabrication of biosensors and their practical application in complex matrices. Thus, bringing out improvements or novelty in the pretreatment methods will be a trend in the upcoming future.Total hip arthroplasty procedures are physically demanding for surgeons. Repetitive mallet swings to impact a surgical handle (impactions), can lead to muscle fatigue, discomfort, and injuries. The use of an automated surgical hammer may reduce fatigue and increase surgical efficiency. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of repeated manual and automated impactions on the user's muscle activation, by means of surface electromyography. Surface electromyography signals were recorded from eight muscles of seven (n = 7) orthopedic surgeons during repetitions of manual and automated impactions, to reach the same surgical outcome (broaching depth). Qualitative data was also captured to track the perceived fatigue and preferences of impaction modalities after completion of impaction tasks. Time to complete tasks, muscle activation, and muscle fatigue were quantified. Results showed a significant decrease in time required to reach the same broaching depth for the automated method compared to manual impactions (p = 0.001). A reduction in muscle fatigue and activation of right Brachioradialis muscle was observed during automated impactions (p = 0.018). A significant difference in fatigue was observed, with lower level of fatigue during automated impactions (p = 0.001). These results suggest that an automated surgical workflow might reduce the exposure to the impaction task and, therefore, muscle fatigue, with a reduced activation of the most engaged muscles. The study suggests that the burden on the user can be reduced by a change in the surgical methodology to perform broaching in total hip arthroplasty, which could potentially benefit surgical efficiency and reduce the risk of fatigue-based errors during a procedure.

Since metabolic abnormalities such as elevated glucose level and imbalanced lipid profiles increase the risk for hypertension and cause endothelial dysfunction, we evaluated the effect of aqueous extract of large cardamom (AELC) on fructose-induced metabolic hypertension and oxidative stress.

The male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 6 groups with 5 rats in each group, and each group was fed with 10% fructose in drinking water for 8weeks. Starting from week 5, animals were treated with 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg/day AELC or Losartan (10 mg/kg/day). Systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial blood pressure was measured once in every seven days using the tail-cuff method. Vascular function, plasma nitric oxide (NO), glucose, lipid profiles, serum biochemical, and anti-oxidant parameters were also evaluated.

Rats fed with fructose showed higher blood pressure, serum cholesterol, and triglyceride levels, but decreased in the AELC or Losartan treatment group. Treatments with AELC prevented exaggerated plasma glucose and oxidative stress and restored the nitric oxide level in fructose-fed rats. STAT5-IN-1 Besides, it also reduced vascular proliferation and improved the relaxation response of acetylcholine in the aorta pre-contracted with phenylephrine.

In summary, the obtained results suggest that AELC can prevent and reverse the high blood pressure induced by fructose, probably by restoring nitric oxide level and by improving altered metabolic parameters.

Socioeconomic status (SES) is often used to quantify social determinants of health. This study uses the National Cancer Institute SES index to examine the effect of SES on disease-specific survival and 5-year conditional disease-specific survival (CDSS; the change in life expectancy with increasing survivorship) in paranasal sinus cancer.

Cross-sectional analysis.

National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) program.

A study of adults with sinus cancer between 1973 and 2015 was performed. The Yost index, a census tract-level composite score of SES, was used to categorize patients. Kaplan-Meier analysis and Cox regression for disease-specific survival were stratified by SES. CDSS was calculated with simplified models. Logistic regression was conducted to identify risk factors for advanced stage at diagnosis, multimodal therapy, and diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma.

There were 3437 patients analyzed. In Cox models adjusting for patient-specific factors, the lowest and treatment course.

Visceral artery aneurysms (VAAs) can be fatal if ruptured. Although a relatively rare incident, it holds a contemporary mortality rate of approximately 12%. VAAs have multiple possible causes, one of which is genetic predisposition. Here, we present a striking family with seven individuals affected by VAAs, and one individual affected by a visceral artery pseudoaneurysm.

We exome sequenced the affected family members and the parents of the proband to find a possible underlying genetic defect. As exome sequencing did not reveal any feasible protein-coding variants, we combined whole-genome sequencing of two individuals with linkage analysis to find a plausible non-coding culprit variant. Variants were ranked by the deep learning framework DeepSEA.

Two of seven top-ranking variants, NC_000013.11g.108154659C>T and NC_000013.11g.110409638C>T, were found in all VAA-affected individuals, but not in the individual affected by the pseudoaneurysm. The second variant is in a candidate cis-regulatory element in the fourth intron of
