Exposure to lead can cause adverse health problems incorporating hypophosphatemia, heart and liver disease, cancers, neurological and cardiovascular diseases, central nervous disorders, and sensory disorders. This study investigated the blood lead level in the general Iranian population with environmental exposure to lead. In the presented systematic review and meta-analysis, the authors searched Iranian dataset, including Magiran, SID, Iranmedex, and Nopa, and the main dataset, comprising PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science, all available articles until 12 January 2019, and extracting 55 studies (with 63 data for analysis) to a meta-analysis. A comprehensive meta-analysis software, pooled standard deviation, mean, sample size, and the utterly random effects model was analyzed in this study. The results showed that the overall mean BLL (95% CI) in total inquiries was 6.41 μg/dL (5.96 to 6.87). Besides, the results for gender and age subgroups were as follows mean BLL, 6.47 μg/dL, 95% CI, 5.79, to 7.15, mean BLL, 6.44 μg/dL, 95% CI, 5.96, to 6.91, respectively. Conclusively the mean BLL in the Iranian population was higher than the recommended level by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Results indicated that the mean BLL in men and adults was more elevated than in women and children, respectively. Therefore, BLL monitoring and screening of the general Iranian population are is necessary to determine a reference value. To investigate the feasibility of implementing decentralized sewage treatment systems aiming to meet environmental standards, the performance of three decentralized wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) comprising septic tanks and anaerobic filters (ST+AF) was evaluated. The ability of the WWTPs to comply with the provisions of the legislation and the technical literature was investigated by monitoring physical and chemical parameters at the entrance and exit of the WWTPs, from May 2017 to August 2018. Considering that factors such as operational routine, design of treatment systems, and the existence of pluvial contributions to the sewage network can influence the performance of WWTPs, an investigation of these factors was conducted. selleck compound The results show that the ST+AF systems can meet the requirements of the legislation. The hypothesis raised in this study is that factors such as cleaning routine and dimensioning of the treatment units can influence the performance of the systems. The best performance was found in the WWTP submitted to frequent cleaning and whose ST dimensions were closest to those recommended by technical standards. The average annual efficiencies of removal of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) in this WWTP assumed values of 93 and 89%, while its solid effluents presented concentrations 82% below the limit established in legislation. Finally, no rainwater contributions were found in the WWTPs, which may be associated with the use of short collection networks in decentralized systems.Functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotube (f-MWCNT) mixed matrix forward osmosis (FO) membranes were fabricated by phase inversion, and the mechanism of sodium alginate (SA) membrane fouling in the presence of various inorganic components with high ionic strength was thoroughly investigated. The membrane incorporated with 0.5% f-MWCNTs (M-0.5) exhibited enhanced performance, which was attributed to the hydrophilicity of the modified nanoparticles and their good compatibility with the cellulose acetate (CA) substrate. Moreover, it was found that the initial permeate flux decline rate for all FO membranes investigated followed the order Na+ + Ca2+ + Mg2+ > Na+ + Ca2+ > Na+ + Mg2+ > Na+, which was attributed to the particle size of SA macromolecules in the corresponding solutions. However, the gradual change in attenuation was consistent with adhesion force observations made for the SA-fouled FO membrane in the later steady-state stage, and there was little difference among M-0 (without f-MWCNTs), M-0.5, and M-1 (with 1% f-MWCNTs). Furthermore, the SA adsorption layer was most compact in the presence of Ca2+, and the flux recovery rate (FRR) was the lowest after simple hydraulic cleaning, but the overall FRRs for FO membranes were greater than 85%. This implies that although a decrease in electrostatic repulsion leads to the formation of a compact fouling layer, an increase in hydration repulsion of hydrated salt ions plays a major role in membrane fouling under high ionic strength conditions.Diclofenac (DCF), 17-β-estradiol (E2), and 17-α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) are emerging pollutants included in the first watch list agreed by European countries and set in the EU Water Directive. The objective of the present study was the analytical monitoring of DCF, E2, and EE2 in surface water and sediment of the Manzanares River in a stretch that crosses the city of Madrid, Spain, and to assess whether such environmental levels could affect the development of aquatic vertebrates through a zebrafish embryo-larval assay. Samples taken during two campaigns in the spring of 2015 were analyzed for DCF, E2, and EE2 by LC-MS or GC-MS. The levels of E2 and EE2 measured in surface water and sediments of the Manzanares were within the ranges reported in other Spanish and European studies; however, DCF levels were higher in the present study. The zebrafish embryos exposed to the Manzanares River water (0-144h) showed lethal effects and sublethal effects (developmental delay, bradycardia, and reduced locomotion). Nevertheless, these effects were not primarily associated with the levels of DCF, E2, and EE2 present in the Manzanares River, because representative mixtures of the field study prepared in the laboratory did not exhibit such toxicity to the zebrafish embryos. This study sought to clarify whether suspended particles containing high Cu concentrations are present in the sea-surface microlayer (S-SML). For this reason, suspended particles (10-2000 μm) in the S-SML were collected periodically from a ship mooring pond during 2018-2020, and the acid-soluble Cu concentration in the suspended particles was measured as particulate Cu (P-Cu). The highest concentration of P-Cu in the S-SML of the pond was 75 μg L-1 with a 90th percentile value of 2.5 μg L-1. This is below P-Cu values reported for the S-SML in North American ports, but 140 times higher than this found in bulk seawater in the Atlantic Ocean. The highest P-Cu concentration in the S-SML of non-organism (abiotic) origin was 17 μg L-1, and the abiotic P-Cu to P-Cu ratio varied from 0.2 to 100%, likely depending on the quality and quantity of biogenic material in the S-SML samples. It is assumed that the S-SML particles examined here contain high Cu concentrations originating from ship antifouling paints.
