This study investigated whether daily exposure to artificial gravity (AG) mitigated lumbar spine flattening and muscle atrophy associated with 60-day head-down tilt (HDT) bed rest (Earth-based space analog). Twenty-four healthy individuals participated in the study 8 received 30-min continuous AG; 8 received 6 × 5-min AG interspersed with rest periods; and 8 received no AG exposure (control group). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the lumbopelvic region was conducted at baseline (BDC) and at day 59 of HDT (HDT59). Longitudinal relaxation time (T1)-weighted images were used to assess morphology of the lumbar spine (spinal length, intervertebral disk angles, disk area) and volumes of the lumbar multifidus (LM), lumbar erector spinae (LES), quadratus lumborum (QL), and psoas major (PM) muscles from L1/L2 to L5/S1 vertebral levels. A chemical shift-based two-point lipid/water Dixon sequence was used to evaluate rotocols used in this study. In atrophied paraspinal muscles, the ratio of lipids versus intramuscular water increased in the postural lumbar muscles, which could impair muscle function during upright standing. These findings have relevance for future space explorations.Low-frequency and high-frequency wide-pulse neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) can generate extra torque (ET) via afferent pathways. Superimposing tendon vibration (TV) to NMES can increase the activation of these afferent pathways and favor ET generation. Knowledge of the characteristics of ET is essential to implement these stimulation paradigms in clinical practice. Thus, we aimed to investigate the effects of frequency and TV superimposition on the occurrence and magnitude of ET in response to wide-pulse NMES. NMES-induced isometric plantar flexion torque was recorded in 30 healthy individuals who performed five NMES protocols wide-pulse low-frequency (1 ms; 20 Hz; WPLF) and wide-pulse high-frequency (1 ms; 100 Hz; WPHF) without and with superimposed TV (1 mm; 100 Hz) and conventional NMES (50 µs; 20 Hz; reference protocol). Each NMES protocol consisted of three 20-s trains interspersed by 90 s of rest, with NMES intensity being adjusted to reach 10% of maximal voluntary contraction. The ET occurreater for high-frequency than for low-frequency wide-pulse neuromuscular electrical stimulation. The superimposition of tendon vibration had no effect on extra torque occurrence or magnitude. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between non-nutritive sweetener (NNS) consumption and stress and anxiety, among a sample of college students. this website Two-hundred and twenty-seven students from a large mid-western university participated in this cross-sectional study. Students completed an online survey that evaluated NNS using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Stress and anxiety were evaluated using previously validated instruments. Most students reported very low/low/average concern for stress (63.9%), and had low/moderate anxiety (82.3%). Participants experiencing high and very high levels of stress had significantly higher NNS consumption compared to those with a very low and low risk, and concern for stress (p less then .046; d = 0.28). There was no difference however for NNS intake and anxiety. Reduction of artificial sweetener intake may be associated with stress levels among college students. However, more research is needed to examine any causal relationship between artificial sweetener intake and stress.Until recently, genotypes of Phytophthora infestans were regionally distributed in Europe, with populations in western Europe being dominated by clonal lineages and those in northern Europe being genetically diverse due to frequent sexual reproduction. However, since 2013, a new clonal lineage (EU_41_A2) has successfully established itself and expanded in the sexually recombining P. infestans populations of northern Europe. The objective of this study was to study phenotypic traits of the new clonal lineage of P. infestans, which may explain its successful establishment and expansion within sexually recombining populations. Fungicide sensitivity, aggressiveness and virulence profiles of isolates of EU_41_A2 were analyzed and compared to those of the local sexual populations from Denmark, Norway, and Estonia. None of the phenotypic data obtained from the isolates collected from Denmark, Estonia and Norway independently explained the invasive success of EU_41_A2 within sexual Nordic populations. Therefore, we hypothesize that the expansion of this new genotype could result from a combination of fitness traits and more favorable environmental conditions that have emerged due to climate change.
Venous thromboembolism, including deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, is a major source of morbidity, mortality, and healthcare utilization. Given the prevalence of venous thromboembolism and its associated mortality, our study sought to identify factors associated with loss to follow-up in venous thromboembolism patients.
This is a single-center retrospective study of all consecutive admitted (inpatient) and emergency department patients diagnosed with acute venous thromboembolism via venous duplex examination and/or chest computed tomography from January 2018 to March 2019. Patients with chronic deep venous thrombosis and those diagnosed in the outpatient setting were excluded. Lost to venous thromboembolism-specific follow-up (LTFU) was defined as patients who did not follow up with vascular, cardiology, hematology, oncology, pulmonology, or primary care clinic for venous thromboembolism management at our institution within three months of initial discharge. Patients discharged to hospice oruggests that significant improvement could be achieved by establishing a pathway for the targeted transition of care to a venous thromboembolism-specific follow-up clinic.Phyllodes tumor is a paradigm of fibroepithelial neoplasm that accounts for less then 1% of the breast neoplastic lesions usually detected in females and uncommonly in the male breast. The World Health Organization classifies the tumor into benign, borderline, and malignant based on the predefined morphological criteria. Squamous differentiation in phyllodes tumor is epithelial metaplasia, which has been occasionally documented in English literature. We report the first undocumented case of a recurrent borderline phyllodes tumor with cystic squamous metaplastic change in a 32-year-old male patient. The histology was that of a fibroepithelial neoplasm with the typical leaf-like projections and cystic spaces lined by squamous epithelium containing keratin debris. The purpose of presenting this case is to elucidate the pathogenesis and discuss other malignant and benign breast lesions that may be included in the differential diagnosis when evaluating a breast lesion with squamous metaplasia, particularly in the context of fine-needle aspirates.
