Cervical smear cytology and colposcopic biopsy histology are prone to error at both collection and interpretation stages, leading to a large number of discordant cases.
Investigation of five-year outcomes for women who have cervical cytology that is discordant and higher grade than histology results.
A retrospective cohort study was carried out for 111 women with cervical cytology discordant and higher grade than histology, after cytopathological review, over a three-year period. Five-year follow-up data were reviewed to identify the highest level of pathology seen within five years from the discordance.
Women with atypical squamous cells with possible high-grade change (ASC-H) cytology and negative biopsy (n=28) had a 46% chance of high-grade histological disease within 5years; with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 1 (CIN1) histology (n=20), this was reduced to 30%. With high-grade cytology and negative histology (n=23), 48% had high-grade disease within five years, including one case of invasive disease; with CIN1 histology 50% had high-grade disease within five years.
This study demonstrates a 30-50% chance of high-grade disease within five years, in the setting of ASC-H or high-grade cytology with a negative or low-grade colposcopic biopsy. This highlights that in the setting of cytology and histology discordance, at least one of the tests indicating high-grade pathology warrants the need for treatment or close ongoing surveillance.

Anaplasma phagocytophilum is the etiological agent of canine granulocytic anaplasmosis in dogs and causes human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA). Tick-borne anaplasmosis has been recognised as an emerging zoonotic health concern worldwide. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of A. phagocytophilum in ticks collected from dogs in the UK and map its distribution. Routine surveillance of tick-borne disease is essential as part of a "One Health" approach to infectious disease management.
Tick DNA samples collected in 2015 as part of a large-scale tick surveillance programme were analysed using a previously validated diagnostic quantitative PCR for A. phagocytophilum.
PCR analysis indicated that 138 out of 2994 tick DNA samples analysed were positive for A. phagocytophilum, a prevalence of 4.6% (95% CI 3.89-5.42). Among these 138 tick DNA samples, 131 were from Ixodes ricinus, six were from Ixodes hexagonus and one was from Ixodes canisuga. Three of the I. ricinus tick DNA samples positive for A. phagocytophilum DNA were also positive for Borrelia spp. DNA and one was positive for Babesia spp. this website DNA, indicating co-infection. The ticks positive for the pathogen DNA were found widely distributed throughout the UK.
These data provide important information on the prevalence and wide distribution of A. phagocytophilum in ticks infesting dogs within the UK.

Radioactive iodine (RAI) is considered the gold standard treatment for feline hyperthyroidism. Currently exposure limits to radiation are regulated by national legislation, therefore the length of the isolation period in hospital for cats receiving radioactive treatment varies according to the place where the radioactive facility is located. The aim of this study was to establish when retained radioactivity decreases in cats receiving subcutaneous I-131 to a level that would allow discharge of cats from the hospital while being compliant with current United Kingdom legislation.
Clinical records of cats treated with subcutaneous I-131 were retrospectively reviewed. Radioactive emission rates were measured using an external probe. Retained radioactivity below 11 MBq at the point of discharge was required by the initial risk assessment to ensure that a 0.3 mSv dose constraint was maintained for owners following standard cat-owner contact restrictions. Average retained activity for each treatment regimen at the time of discharge was calculated. The biological half-life for iodine retention was also calculated.
Overall, an end activity below 11 MBq was reached at day 11 in 49% of cats, and at day 13 in 91% of cats. These cats were allowed to be discharged according to UK legislation, as long as contact restrictions were applied at home for 2weeks.
Based on our study, an isolation period of 13 days before allowing discharge of cats treated with subcutaneous RAI (I-131) is compliant with current UK legislation.

Much of the social skills intervention literature involves goals that have been selected through interviews and direct observation of behavior without a reference to desired outcomes. The purpose of the current study was to extend research on descriptive assessments of conversations by including additional measures and examining conversational behavior across contexts. We conducted a descriptive assessment of social skills exhibited by 16 neurotypical young adults. Participants had 10-min conversations in groups and 1-on-1 with friends and novel individuals. We then assessed variability within and across participants on a wide array of relevant measures. Throughout the conversations, participants shared the conversation time equally, spent most of the conversation time making on-topic comments, and gazed at their conversation partner more frequently while listening than while speaking. These descriptive data extend current research, inform future experimental analyses, and may guide clinical decisions.
