Control of magnetization in magnetic nanostructures is essential for development of spintronic devices because it governs fundamental device characteristics such as energy consumption, areal density, and operation speed. In this respect, spin-orbit torque (SOT), which originates from the spin-orbit interaction, has been widely investigated due to its efficient manipulation of the magnetization using in-plane current. AMG 232 inhibitor SOT spearheads novel spintronic applications including high-speed magnetic memories, reconfigurable logics, and neuromorphic computing. Herein, recent advances in SOT research, highlighting the considerable benefits and challenges of SOT-based spintronic devices, are reviewed. First, the materials and structural engineering that enhances SOT efficiency are discussed. Then major experimental results for field-free SOT switching of perpendicular magnetization are summarized, which includes the introduction of an internal effective magnetic field and the generation of a distinct spin current with out-of-plane spin polarization. Finally, advanced SOT functionalities are presented, focusing on the demonstration of reconfigurable and complementary operation in spin logic devices. © 2020 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The widely used adult cortical surface templates (e.g., fsaverage, Conte69, and the HCP-MMP atlas) are based on the Caucasian population. Neuroanatomical differences related to environmental and genetic factors between Chinese and Caucasian populations make these templates unideal for analysis of the cortex in the Chinese population. We used a multimodal surface matching algorithm in an iterative procedure to create Chinese (sCN200) and Caucasian (sUS200) cortical surface atlases based on 200 demographically matched high-quality T1- and T2-weighted (T1w and T2w, respectively) MR images from the Chinese Human Connectome Project (CHCP) and the Human Connectome Project (HCP), respectively. Templates for anatomical cortical surfaces (white matter, pial, midthickness) and cortical feature maps of sulcal depth, curvature, thickness, T1w/T2w myelin, and cortical labels were generated. Using independent subsets from the CHCP and the HCP, we quantified the accuracy of cortical registration when using population-matched and mismatched atlases. The performance of the cortical registration and accuracy of curvature alignment when using population-matched atlases was significantly improved, thereby demonstrating the importance of using the sCN200 cortical surface atlas for Chinese adult population studies. Finally, we analyzed female and male cortical differences within the Chinese and Caucasian populations. We identified significant between-sex differences in cortical curvature, sulcal depth, thickness, and T1w/T2w myelin maps in the frontal, temporal, parietal, occipital, and insular lobes as well as the cingulate cortices. © 2020 The Authors. A 49-year-old woman with multiple prior cardiac surgeries presented with heart failure due to bioprosthetic tricuspid valve stenosis. Initial predilation valvuloplasty suggested conventional ViV implant would produce patient-prosthesis mismatch, therefore, we intentionally fractured the bioprosthetic valve ring to facilitate optimal hemodynamics with implantation of a 29 mm transcatheter valve. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.BACKGROUND Single-modality treatment (surgery or radiotherapy [RT]) is a curative treatment option for early-stage oropharyngeal carcinoma (OPC) with comparable (excellent) oncological outcomes. This study aimed to compare self-reported swallowing function. METHODS Participants with a T1-2N0-2bM0 OPC who were offered single-modality treatment and were recruited to the Head and Neck 5000 study were included. Prospectively collected self-reported swallowing function was compared between surgery and RT. RESULTS Those offered RT (n = 150) had less favorable baseline characteristics than those offered surgery (n = 150). At 12-month follow up, RT participants reported more swallowing problems (35% vs 23%, RR 1.3; 95% CI 0.8-2.3, P = .277) in models adjusted for baseline characteristics. In those allocated to surgery who received adjuvant therapy (n = 78, 52%), the proportion with swallowing problems was similar to those allocated to RT alone. CONCLUSIONS Participants offered surgery alone had similar mortality but improved swallowing, although this was not statistically significant. However, over half of participants offered surgery alone received surgery and adjuvant therapy. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.Recently, many studies have been conducted trying to explain the molecular mechanism of curcumin action in various pathological states of the cell and the organism. Curcumin is considered to play a role in the regulation of T-lymphocytes function in the lymphoid tissue of the large intestine, apoptosis of the human papilloma and the activity of the 26S proteasome, and p53 level. Research works have shown that curcumin in tumor can regulate reactive oxygen species (ROS) and cytosolic calcium ion level as well as affect other signaling molecules [nuclear factor kappa B (NF-KB), cytokines] triggering endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondrial stress, and thus contributing to death of cancer cells. Curcumin can also arrest of the cell cycle in the G2/M phase leading to apoptosis and/or reduction in cancer cells proliferation. Moreover, curcumin is capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier, and thus it may protect the neurons from oxidative stress and inflammation. Finally, curcumin may play a role in cardiological protection and it is possible to use it in the protection of liver and spleen against oxidative and inflammatory injury. Among signaling pathways regulated by curcumin, the most important seem to be those related with regulation of oxidative stress and inhibition of NF-кB activity. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
