Gastric cancer is the fifth most common malignant neoplasm and the third leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. In Peru, its incidence is 15.8 per 100,000 population, and it is associated with high mortality rates, especially in areas with low socioeconomic status. The aim of this study was to compare preoperative, postoperative, and anatomopathological staging results and their relation to disease recurrence and survival.
We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients undergoing surgery for gastric cancer with a definitive postoperative anatomopathological diagnosis from 2005 to 2014 at the Hospital Nacional Luis N. Sáenz. Statistical analyses included descriptive and correlation statistics using the κ index, determination of associations between preoperative and postoperative staging and surgical reintervention and recurrence using the χ
test, as well as Kaplan Meier survival analysis.
There was little correlation between preoperative staging and final anatomopathological diagnosis, while there was a good correlation with postoperative staging. A significant association was found between preoperative staging and cancer recurrence. In the survival analysis, survival was lower among patients with underestimated staging.
The survival of patients with gastric cancer can be affected by an overestimation of preoperative staging, therefore improvements in preoperative staging could lengthen the survival of patients undergoing gastric cancer surgery.

The treatment of Riehl's melanosis, also known as pigmented contact dermatitis, is highly challenging. Intense pulsed light (IPL) and 1064 nm Q-switched NdYag (QS-NdYAG) laser are reported to have some efficacy. However, no single effective treatment has yet been identified. In this study, we demonstrated the efficacy and safety of the non-ablative 1927 nm fractional thulium fiber laser (TFL, LASEMD™; Lutronic Corp., Goyang, Korea) for patients with Riehl's melanosis.
A retrospective chart and photographic review of nine patients with Riehl's melanosis, who had received at least three sessions of TFL treatment, was performed. Before the start of TFL treatment, combination treatment with a topical cream containing hydroquinone, low-fluence QS-NdYAG laser, pulsed dye laser, and IPL was used with variable and discouraging effects. Seven patients were treated on the face and two patients on the neck with three to seven sessions at 1-month intervals. This report suggests that TFL could be an alternative and/or additive treatment option for hyperpigmentation in intractable Riehl's melanosis and might be a promising treatment for PIH caused by any reason including Riehl's melanosis. Fibromyalgia is characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain and often accompanied by cognitive and emotional problems. Adaptation to fibromyalgia may therefore also rely on one's ability to regulate emotional problems. In this study, we examined two indices of emotion regulation, that is, (a) affective instability, involving frequent large fluctuations in self-reported affect, and (b) resting heart rate variability (HRV).
Participants were 46 patients with fibromyalgia (M
=45.4years; 39 females) and 46 matched healthy controls (M
=44.9years; 37 females). Heart rate was monitored under resting conditions to derive HRV. Subsequently, participants completed an electronic end-of-day diary for 14 consecutive days assessing daily levels of pain, disability, negative affect (NA) and positive affect (PA). Affective instability was operationalized as the mean square of successive differences in daily mood.
Results indicate increased levels of NA instability and reduced levels of HRV in patients with fiblgia outcomes, providing pathways for clinical practice.
This study provides novel insight in the link between emotion regulation indices,that is, heart-rate variability and negative affective (NA) instability, in patients with fibromyalgia, and presents evidence for differences in both emotion regulation indices between patients with fibromyalgia and healthy people. Furthermore, results link increased NA instability with increased levels of daily disability in patients with fibromyalgia. Together, these findings offer support for a key role of emotion regulation in fibromyalgia outcomes, providing pathways for clinical practice.
This study aimed to observe changes in working posture by measuring the REBA (Rapid Entire Body Assessment) score of dental hygiene students according to digital sound feedback linked with a smartphone application.
This study was conducted on 28 fourth-year dental hygiene students who received theoretical and practical training on dental posture in the second year and then practised on mannequins and patients for about four semesters. Periodontal instrumentation was performed freely by applying digital sound notification feedback for four weeks after baseline, 30minutes per week. REBA was measured after performing periodic structure construction without providing digital sound notification feedback for the last 1-2minutes. Follow-up was conducted the same way 2-3weeks after the intervention period.
The REBA score for total, neck and trunk of all subjects showed statistically significant decreases post-intervention compared with the baseline scores (total p<.001, neck p<.001 and trunk p=.042).
A digital sound feedback system was shown to be effective in encouraging correct working posture in dental hygiene students by helping them improve their REBA scores.
