In this work, new selective and sensitive dual-template molecularly imprinted polymer nanoparticles (MIPs) were synthesized and characterized. Sorbent MIPs were investigated for simultaneous extraction and clean-up of thiamethoxam and thiacloprid from light and dark honey samples. In this study, ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry triple-quadrupole (UHPLC-MS/MS) (QQQ) was used to detect and quantify the pesticides. The kinetic model with adsorption kinetics of sorbent was investigated. The optimal adsorption conditions were 80 mg of polymer MIPs, a 30-min extraction time, and a pH of 7. The detection limit (LOD) and the quantification limit (LOQ) varied from 0.045 to 0.070 µg kg-1 and from 0.07 to 0.10 µg kg-1, respectively. The intra-day and inter-day precision (RSD, %) ranged from 1.3 to 2.0% and from 8.2 to 12.0%, respectively. The recovery of thiamethoxam and thiacloprid ranged from 96.8 to 106.5% and 95.3 to 104.4%, respectively, in light and dark honey samples.A validated method for B vitamin separation and quantification from lentil seeds using ultra high performance liquid chromatography-selected reaction monitoring mass spectrometry (UHPLC-SRM MS) was reported. The use of three enzymes (acid phosphatase, β-glucosidase, and rat serum) with a 4 h incubation was sufficient to convert bound B vitamins into their free forms. Twenty B vitamers were selected and a 5-min UHPLC-SRM MS method was optimized for rapid analysis. This method was applied to quantify B vitamin concentration during lentil seed germination over a 5-day period. Total B vitamins increased up to 1.5-fold on day 5 (from 39.2 µg/g to 60.6 µg/g of dry weight) comparing with dry seeds. Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) was the most abundant B vitamin in both dry seeds (34.2%) and in germinated seeds (17.7%-24.5% of total B vitamins); B8 (biotin) and B12 (cyanocobalamin) were not detected in lentil samples.Impact of pulsed electric field (PEF) assisted process on preparation of custard apple leaf extract (CALE) using ethanol (70%, v/v) was studied. selleck Different electric field strengths (2-6 kV/cm), pulse numbers (100-300 pulses) with specific energies (45-142 kJ/kg) for 2.5 to 5 min were implemented. Cell disintegration index was higher in CALE when PEF 6 kV/cm, 300 pulses, 142 kJ/kg for 5 min was applied. Extraction yield was higher (+5.2%) than the untreated counterpart (13.28%). Chlorophyll A and B contents were negligible in PEF pre-treated CALE. PEF improved radical scavenging activities assessed by DPPH, ABTS radical scavening activities and FRAP. The antibacterial properties of CALE against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were highest. Purpureacin 2 and rutin were abundant in PEF pre-treated CALE. Therefore PEF was the potential aid in augmenting extraction yield and bioactivities of the extract from custard apple leaves. The aim of this research was to conjugate chitosan (CT) with lauric acid (LA) and l-carnitine (CNT) to yield a product that is water-soluble at neutral pH and has surface, antimicrobial, and antioxidant activities. The resulting CT-LA-CNT is water-soluble at neutral pH, in contrast with CT and CT-LA, which require the aid of acid to become soluble. Concerning antimicrobial activity, for S. aureus, the minimum bactericidal concentration of CT was lower than those of CT-LA or CT-LA-CNT, while the three compounds exhibited similar bactericidal activity against E. coli. CT-LA-CNT was also used to study the oxidative stability of soybean oil in an oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion; sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and Tween 80 and Span 80 (TS), an emulsifier mixture, were used as controls for comparison. The results showed that CT-LA-CNT was better than SDS and TS at protecting the lipid from oxidation. The objective of this study was to determine the extent that the aronia berry matrix affects gut microbiota composition, fecal short chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and colonic anthocyanins in healthy mice. C57BL/6J mice were fed AIN-93 M control diet (C) or C with whole aronia berry (AB), aronia extract (AE), or polyphenol-depleted AB (D) at the expense of cornstarch. After one week of feeding, AB and D increased fecal anthocyanins more than AE. Diets differentially affected SCFA and microbiota. AB fecal SCFA was associated with increased metabolism of succinate and pyruvate to butyrate. D increased acetic acid production, was associated with increased abundance of predicted genes for fermentation of carbohydrates to acetyl-coA. AB and D also increased predicted abundance of microbial catechol metabolism pathway I relative to C, which was attributed to enrichment of Lachnospiraceae. Therefore, the berry matrix impacts how aronia polyphenols interact with the gut microbiota in healthy mice. This study aimed to investigate the release of silver ions from the packaging, their diffusion within a food hydrogel and the effect on the growth of Pseudomonas fluorescens. Biosorbed-silver nanoparticles (BSNPs) were synthesized using a plant extract and were incorporated into chitosan or poly (vinyl alcohol) polymer to prepare biocomposite films. The addition of BSNPs improved the physical and antimicrobial properties of the films as shown by tensile strength and inhibition of P. fluorescens in hydrogels, respectively. PVA based BSNPs film showed a stronger antimicrobial effect, compared to chitosan based BSNPs film and this correlated with a higher amount of silver ions release from the PVA film into the hydrogel. Results suggest that the strength of the interaction between BSNPs and the film polymer is the key factor leading to the difference in the release behaviour of the antimicrobials, which in turn determines the antimicrobial activity of the active packaging.
The primary aim of this study was to evaluate how the Game Ready© cryotherapy system impacts postoperative analgesia following lumbar fusion. The secondary aim was to study the effect of cryotherapy on blood loss, transfusion rate and recovery after surgery.
This was a retrospective study of 60 patients divided into two consecutive sets. The first set of 30 patients underwent the current anesthesia protocol at our facility (control group) while the second set of 30 underwent the same protocol but the patient wore the Game Ready© cryotherapy belt immediately postoperative (GR group).
VAS for pain at H6 did not differ between groups [5.2±1.7 vs. 5.2±1.8 (p=0.94)]; however, there was a significant decrease in pain at H24 and H48 in the GR group relative to the control group (p=0.04; p=0.01; p=0.01). Consumption of morphine over the first 24 and 48hours was 50% less in the GR group than in the control group (p=0.01 and p<0.0001). Discharge occurred significantly earlier in the GR group (3.9±1.0 days) than the control group (5.
