Reactivation of human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) from latently infected T cells is a critical barrier to cure patients. It remains unknown whether reactivation of individual latent cells occurs stochastically in response to latency reversal agents (LRAs) or is a deterministic outcome of an underlying cell state. To characterize these single-cell responses, we leverage the classical Luria-Delbrück fluctuation test where single cells are isolated from a clonal population and exposed to LRAs after colony expansion. Data show considerable colony-to-colony fluctuations with the fraction of reactivating cells following a skewed distribution. Modeling systematic measurements of fluctuations over time uncovers a transient heritable memory that regulates HIV-1 reactivation, where single cells are in an LRA-responsive state for a few weeks before switching back to an irresponsive state. These results have enormous implications for designing therapies to purge the latent reservoir and further utilize fluctuation-based assays to uncover hidden transient cellular states underlying phenotypic heterogeneity.The cross talk between adipose tissue and the heart has an increasing importance for cardiac function under physiological and pathological conditions. This study characterizes the role of fat body lipolysis for cardiac function in Drosophila melanogaster. C. elegans learning inside the maze is possible after a single training session, it resembles working memory, and it prevails over conflicting environmental cues. We provide evidence that the observed learning is a food-triggered multisensory behavior, which requires mechanosensory and proprioceptive input, and utilizes cues about the structural features of nematodes' environment and their body actions. The CREB-like transcription factor and dopamine signaling are also involved in maze performance. This editorial provides a brief perspective on the promising prospects of polyphosphazene-based biomaterials for medical device technology, focusing mainly on the authors' work on this particular polymeric system.
Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among Hispanic women. The aim of our study was to estimate cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk among Hispanic and non-Hispanic White (NHW) breast cancer survivors compared with their respective general population cohorts.
Cohorts of 17 469 breast cancer survivors (1774 Hispanic and 15 695 NHW) in the Utah Cancer Registry diagnosed between 1997 and 2016, and 65 866 women (6209 Hispanic and 59 657 NHW) from the general population in the Utah Population Database were identified. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) for CVD.
The risk of diseases of the circulatory system was higher in Hispanic than NHW breast cancer survivors 1-5 years after cancer diagnosis, in comparison with their respective general population cohorts (HR

Increased risks were observed for both Hispanic and NHW breast cancer survivors for diseases of the heart and the veins and lymphatics, compared with the general population cohorts. More than 5 years after cancer diagnosis, elevated risk of diseases of the veins and lymphatics persisted in both ethnicities. The CVD risk due to chemotherapy and hormone therapy was higher in Hispanic than NHW breast cancer survivors but did not differ for distant stage, higher baseline comorbidities, or baseline smoking.

Siu et al. Lancet Infect Dis 2012; 12 881-87). ILAS is frequently associated with metastatic spread including the eyes, lungs, and the central nervous system. The morbidity and mortality of affected patients are increased compared to liver abscesses of other origin, especially in cases with concomitant diabetes mellitus (J. E. Choby et al. J Intern Med 2020; 287(3) 283-300). Immediate diagnosis and early intervention are essential for an optimal outcome. Therefore, ultrasound plays a crucial role if hvKp is suspected. However, experience with the characteristics of such abscesses on contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is very limited.
