Phedimus takesimensis (Ulleungdo flat-leaved stonecrop) is endemic to Ulleung and Dokdo Islands off the east coast of the Korean Peninsula. It was suggested that P. takesimensis originated via anagenetic speciation from the continental progenitor species P. kamtchaticus or P. aizoon. However, little is known of the phylogenetic relationships and population genetic structure among species of Phedimus in the Korean Peninsula and Ulleung/Dokdo Islands. We inferred the phylogenetic relationships among congeneric species in Korea based on nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer and chloroplast noncoding regions. We also sampled extensively for P. takesimensis on Ulleung Island and the continental species, P. kamtschaticus and P. aizoon, to assess the genetic consequences of anagenetic speciation. We found (1) the monophyly of P. takesimensis, (2) no apparent reduction in genetic diversity in anagenetically derived P. takesimensis compared to the continental progenitor species, (3) apparent population genetic structuring of P. takesimensis, and (4) two separate colonization events for the origin of the Dokdo Island population. This study contributes to our understanding of the genetic consequences of anagenetic speciation on Ulleung Island.Plants are constantly under the threat of various biotic and abiotic stress conditions and to overcome these stresses, they have evolved multiple mechanisms including systematic accumulation of different phytohormones, phytoalexins and pathogenesis related (PR) proteins. PR proteins are cluster of proteins with low molecular weight which get incited in plants under different stresses. In this paper, in-silico approaches are used to compare the physico-chemical properties of 6 PR proteins (PR1, PR2, PR5, PR9, PR10, PR12) of Arabidopsis thaliana and Oryza sativa. Topological analysis revealed the presence of transmembrane localization of PR2 and absence of transmembrane domain in PR10 of both model plants studied. Amino acid composition shows the dominance of small aliphatic amino acids i.e. alanine, glycine and serine in both plants studied. These results highlights the similarities and differences between PRs of both model plants, which provides clue towards their diversified roles in plants.
Computed tomography (CT) imaging is an indispensable tool in the management of acute paediatric neurological illness providing rapid answers that facilitate timely decisions and interventions that may be lifesaving. While clear guidelines exist for use of CT in trauma to maximise individual benefits against the risk of radiation exposure and the cost to the healthcare system, the same is not the case for medical emergency.
The study primarily aimed to retrospectively describe indications for non-trauma head CT and the findings at a tertiary paediatric hospital.
Records of children presenting with acute illness to the medical emergency unit of Red Cross War Children's Hospital, Cape Town, over one year (2013) were retrospectively reviewed. Participants were included if they underwent head CT scan within 24 hours of presentation with a non-trauma event. Clinical data and reports of CT findings were extracted.
Inclusion criteria were met by 311 patients; 188 (60.5%) were boys. The median age was 39.2 (IQ were normal. Patients with VPS constituted the majority of patients with abnormal CT scans that required subsequent neurosurgical intervention. Evidence-based guidelines are required to guide the best use of head CT in the management of children without head trauma.

However, the epidemiology for humans and animals remains largely unknown in many of these countries with Cameroon being a typical example. Despite common knowledge that brucellosis affects livestock, the actual number of infected animals remains unknown. Through a scoping review, the current known status of the disease is described. The aim is to ascertain relevant and publicly accessible research and knowledge of human and animal brucellosis in the country, and to provide an overview of the factors associated with its known persistence. Seroprevalence has been estimated and published in 12 separate instances (1 human; 9 cattle; 1 human and cattle; and 1 that includes cattle, pigs, and small ruminants), between 1982 and 2020, in 9 of the country's 10 geopolitical regions. In 1983, Brucella abortus and B. melitensis were isolated in cattle, but no further bacterial isolation has been published since. The seroprevalence from 196 total humans has ranged between 5.6% and 28.1%, and between 3.0% and 30.8% for 14,044 total cattle. see more As there is no ongoing surveillance program, it is not currently possible to identify the specific Brucella spp. that are endemic to the country and its regions. There are sufficient agricultural systems of cattle, pigs, goats, and sheep to sustain the presence of multiple Brucella spp. Surveillance information is the cornerstone of epidemiologic decision making, and is needed to direct policy makers, public health authorities, and veterinary services to appropriate actions. A combination of serological and molecular based diagnostics for surveillance is necessary to identify, quantify, and direct the appropriate public health interventions. Cameroon has an opportunity to build public and animal health infrastructure, leading the way for central Africa in the management and future eradication of brucellosis.
This study aimed to compare the efficacy between bipolar radiofrequency ablation (RFA), using twin internally cooled wet (TICW) electrodes, and switching monopolar RFA, using separable clustered (SC) electrodes, in the treatment of recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after locoregional treatment.
In this single-center, two-arm, parallel-group, randomized controlled study, we performed a 11 random allocation on eligible patients with recurrent HCC after locoregional treatment, to receive TICW-RFA or SC-RFA. The primary endpoint was the minimum diameter of the ablation zone per unit ablation time. Secondary endpoints included other technical parameters, complication rate, technical success and technique efficacy, and clinical outcomes.
