In this study, the main photophysical properties (excitation energies, singlet-triplet energy gap, and spin orbit coupling matrix elements) of some unsubstituted and iodine substituted phosphorus corrole complexes have been determined by using density functional theory and its time-dependent formulation. Results show that these compounds can be proposed as photosensitizers in PDT. The heavy atom effects have been rationalized on the basis of El-Sayed rules. The objective of this study was to compare spatial photosynthetic traits and bioactive compound accumulation in kale (Brassica oleracea L. var Acephala) according to the distribution and length of UV-B exposure near harvest. Plants were exposed to UV-B of 0-3, 3-6, and 6-9 W m-2 for 4 h per day at 5 days (Exp. 1) and 4.2 W m-2 at 5, 4, 3, 2, or 1 days (Exp. 2) before harvest. In spatial distribution, the higher the UV-B intensity, the lower the mean Fv /Fm (maximal photochemical efficiency of PSII) and the higher the concentration of total flavonoid compound (TFC). With UV-B stress, Fv /Fm and fluorescence transient parameters decreased except for DI0 /CS (dissipated energy flux per cross section) and PIabs (performance index of PSII). When exposed to UV-B radiation for 2 days before harvest, the total phenolic compounds and TFC per plant were highest, not always proportional to the local Fv /Fm but affected by dry weight. Short-term UV-B stress near harvest would be more efficient for the accumulation of bioactive compounds by minimizing the loss of plant weight. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.Beneficial effects of resistance exercise on metabolic health and particularly muscle hypertrophy and fat loss are well established, but the underlying chemical and physiological mechanisms are not fully understood. Here, we identified a myometabolite-mediated metabolic pathway that is essential for the beneficial metabolic effects of resistance exercise in mice. We showed that substantial accumulation of the tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediate α-ketoglutaric acid (AKG) is a metabolic signature of resistance exercise performance. Interestingly, human plasma AKG level is also negatively correlated with BMI. Pharmacological elevation of circulating AKG induces muscle hypertrophy, brown adipose tissue (BAT) thermogenesis, and white adipose tissue (WAT) lipolysis in vivo. We further found that AKG stimulates the adrenal release of adrenaline through 2-oxoglutarate receptor 1 (OXGR1) expressed in adrenal glands. Finally, by using both loss-of-function and gain-of-function mouse models, we showed that OXGR1 is essential for AKG-mediated exercise-induced beneficial metabolic effects. These findings reveal an unappreciated mechanism for the salutary effects of resistance exercise, using AKG as a systemically derived molecule for adrenal stimulation of muscle hypertrophy and fat loss. © 2020 The Authors. Published under the terms of the CC BY 4.0 license.BACKGROUND The 2013 ACC/AHA (American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association) cholesterol guidelines provided an evidence-based rationale for the allocation of lipid-lowering therapy based on risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Adoption of these guidelines was initially suboptimal but whether this has improved over time remains unclear. HYPOTHESIS Prevalence of guideline-based statin therapy will increase over time. METHODS Electronic health record data were used to create two cross-sectional data sets of patients (age 40-75) served in 2013 and 2017 by a large health system. Data sets included demographics, clinical risk factors, lipid values, diagnostic codes, and active medication orders during each period. Prevalence of indications for statin therapy according to the ACC/AHA guidelines and statin prescriptions were compared between each time period. RESULTS In 2013, of the 219 376 adults, 57.7% of patients met statin eligibility criteria, of which 61.3% were prescribed any statin and 19.0% a high intensity statin. Among those eligible, statin use was highest in those with established ASCVD (83.9%) and lowest in those with elevated ASCVD risk >7.5% (39.3%). In 2017, of the 256 074 adults, 62.3% were statin eligible, of which 62.3% were prescribed a statin and 24.3% a high intensity statin. In 2017, 66.4% of statin eligible men were prescribed a statin compared to 57.4% of statin eligible women (P  less then  0.001). The use of ezetimibe (3.6% in 2013, 2.4% in 2017) and protein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 inhibitors ( less then 0.1% and 0.1%) was infrequent. CONCLUSION In a large health system, guideline-based statin use has remained suboptimal. Improved strategies are needed to increase statin utilization in appropriate patients. © 2020 The Authors. Clinical Cardiology published by Wiley Periodicals, Inc.A new head exposure system for double-blind provocation studies investigating possible effects of 2.45 GHz Wi-Fi exposure on human sleep was developed and dosimetrically analyzed. The exposure system includes six simultaneously radiating directional antennas arranged along a circle (radius 0.6 m) around the test subject's head, and enables a virtually uniform head exposure, i.e. without any preferred direction of incidence, during sleep. The system is fully computer-controlled and applies a real wireless local area network (WLAN) signal representing different transmission patterns as expected in real WLAN scenarios, i.e. phases of "beacon only" as well as phases of different data transmission rates. Sham and verum are applied in a double-blind crossover study design and all relevant exposure data, i.e. forward and reverse power at all six antenna inputs, are continuously recorded for quality control. For a total antenna input power (sum of all antennas) of 220 mW, typical specific absorption rate (SAR) in cortical brain regions is approximately 1-2 mW/kg (mass average SAR over respective brain region), which can be seen as a realistic worst-case exposure level in real WLAN scenarios.
