Multiple brain regions have been studied in the context of simple active vision tasks in which a visual target's appearance is temporally separated from saccade execution. Most neurons have tight spatial registration between visual and saccadic signals, and in areas such as prefrontal cortex (PFC), some neurons show persistent delay activity that links visual and motor epochs and has been proposed as a basis for spatial working memory. Many PFC neurons also show rich dynamics, which have been attributed to alternative working memory codes and the representation of other task variables. Our study investigated the transition between processing a visual stimulus and generating an eye movement in populations of PFC neurons in macaque monkeys performing a memory guided saccade task. We found that neurons in two subregions of PFC, the frontal eye fields (FEF) and area 8Ar, differed in their dynamics and spatial response profiles. These dynamics could be attributed largely to shifts in the spatial profile of visual and motor responses in individual neurons. This led to visual and motor codes for particular spatial locations that were instantiated by different mixtures of neurons, which could be important in PFC's flexible role in multiple sensory, cognitive, and motor tasks.NEW & NOTEWORTHY A central question in neuroscience is how the brain transitions from sensory representations to motor outputs. The prefrontal cortex contains neurons that have long been implicated as important in this transition and in working memory. We found evidence for rich and diverse tuning in these neurons, which was often spatially misaligned between visual and saccadic responses. This feature may play an important role in flexible working memory capabilities.Patients with pure alexia have major difficulties in reading aloud. However, they often perform above chance level in reading tasks that do not require overt articulation of the target word - like lexical decision or semantic judgment - a phenomenon usually known as "implicit reading." There is no agreement in the literature on whether implicit reading should be attributed to relative sparing of some left hemisphere (LH) reading centers or rather to signs of compensatory endeavors by the right hemisphere (RH). We report the case of an 81-year-old patient (AA) with pure alexia due to a lesion involving the left occipital lobe and the temporal infero-mesial areas, as well as the posterior callosal pathways. Although AA's reading was severely impaired and proceeded letter by letter, she showed an above-chance-level performance for frequent concrete words in a tachistoscopic lexical decision task. A structural disconnectome analysis revealed that AA's lesion not only affected the left occipital cortex and the splenium it also disconnected white-matter tracts meant to connect the visual word-form system to decision-related frontal areas within the LH. We suggest that the RH, rather than the LH, may be responsible for patient AA's implicit reading.Seating is the overriding factor influencing aircraft cabin comfort. To efficiently enhance seat comfort, this paper proposes a method to identify key optimisation points for seat comfort. Seat discomfort indicators are recognised based on a comparison of perceived performance with expectation. Confirmatory factor analysis is used to explore the latent variables of discomfort indicators, and a structural model was used to analyse correlations between latent variables. Finally, the most important latent variable influencing seat comfort was clarified. Analysis results of survey data from narrow-body aircraft show that seat discomfort indicators centre on the physical performance of the seat and include four latent variables support performance, personal space, contact surface features, and safety and stability. Support performance determines body posture while travelling and is the overriding latent variable influencing seat comfort. Despite its importance, sepsis lacks a proper definition. An established definition will lead to early and accurate diagnosis, prompt treatment, and a reduced mortality rate. The aim of this work is to discuss current definitions and to look ahead at novel definitions with clinical implications. Method A review of the current understanding of sepsis definitions in burns. Results Adaptation of sepsis definitions in the general population and specific burn definitions have gotten better but still need improvements and, potentially, incorporation of molecular, laboratory, patient-specific, and clinical factors. This work includes the history, evolution, and predictive value of current definitions of sepsis in burns. A review of current and future markers of sepsis and potentially useful definitions are presented. Conclusions Sepsis definitions have evolved over the last decades and will continue to do so. We believe the best definition in burn patients is the Sepsis-3 that was developed originally for critically ill patients.
