Earthquakes are natural disasters that cause damage in a wide range of regions and represent a complex system that does not have a clear causal relationship with specific observable factors. This research analyzes the earthquake activities on the Korean Peninsula with respect to spatial and temporal factors. Using logarithmic regression analysis, we showed that the relationship between the location of the earthquake and its frequency in these locations follows a power law distribution. In addition, we showed that since 1998 the average earthquake magnitude has decreased from 3.0143 to 2.5433 and the frequency has risen by 3.98 times. Finally, the spatial analysis revealed significantly concentrated earthquake activities in a few particular areas and showed that earthquake occurrence points have shifted southeast. This research showed the change in earthquake dynamics and concentration of earthquake activities in particular regions over time. This finding implies the necessity of further research on spatially-derived earthquake policies on the change of earthquake dynamics.Current treatments for Alzheimer's disease are only symptomatic and limited to reduce the progression rate of the mental deterioration. Mild Cognitive Impairment, a transitional stage in which the patient is not cognitively normal but do not meet the criteria for specific dementia, is associated with high risk for development of Alzheimer's disease. Thus, non-invasive techniques to predict the individual's risk to develop Alzheimer's disease can be very helpful, considering the possibility of early treatment. Diffusion Tensor Imaging, as an indicator of cerebral white matter integrity, may detect and track earlier evidence of white matter abnormalities in patients developing Alzheimer's disease. Here we performed a voxel-based analysis of fractional anisotropy in three classes of subjects Alzheimer's disease patients, Mild Cognitive Impairment patients, and healthy controls. We performed Support Vector Machine classification between the three groups, using Fisher Score feature selection and Leave-one-out cross-validation. Bilateral intersection of hippocampal cingulum and parahippocampal gyrus (referred as parahippocampal cingulum) is the region that best discriminates Alzheimer's disease fractional anisotropy values, resulting in an accuracy of 93% for discriminating between Alzheimer's disease and controls, and 90% between Alzheimer's disease and Mild Cognitive Impairment. These results suggest that pattern classification of Diffusion Tensor Imaging can help diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, specially when focusing on the parahippocampal cingulum. In this study, we investigated the effect of intergroup contact on processing of own- and other-race faces using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI). Previous studies have shown a neural own-race effect with greater BOLD response to own race compared to other race faces. In our study, white participants completed a social-categorization task and an individuation task while viewing the faces of both black and white strangers after having answered questions about their previous experiences with black people. see more We found that positive contact modulated BOLD activity in the right fusiform gyrus (rFG) and left inferior occipital gyrus (lIOC), regions associated with face processing. Within these regions, higher positive contact was associated with higher activity when processing black, compared to white faces during the social categorisation task. We also found that in both regions a greater amount of individuating experience with black people was associated with greater activation for black vs. white faces in the individuation task. Quantity of contact, implicit racial bias and negatively valenced contact showed no effects. Our findings suggest that positive contact and individuating experience directly modulate processing of out-group faces in the visual cortex, and illustrate that contact quality rather than mere familiarity is an important factor in reducing the own race face effect. We study the dynamic chiral magnetic conductivity (DCMC) and natural optical activity in an inversion-broken tilted Weyl semimetal (WSM). Starting from the Kubo formula, we derive the analytical expressions for the DCMC for two different directions of the incident electromagnetic wave. We show that the angle of rotation of the plane of polarization of the transmitted wave exhibits remarkable anisotropy and is larger along the tilt direction. This striking anisotropy of DCMC results in anisotropic optical activity and rotary power, which can be experimentally observed as a topological magneto-electric effect of inversion-broken tilted WSMs. Finally, using the low energy Hamiltonian, we show that the DCMC follows the universal [Formula see text] decay in the high frequency regime. In the low frequency regime, however, the DCMC shows sharp peaks at the tilt dependent effective chemical potentials of the left-handed and right-handed Weyl points. This can serve as a signature to distinguish between the type-I and type-II Weyl semimetals. The glass transition temperature (Tg) is a key property that dictates the applicability of conjugated polymers. The Tg demarks the transition into a brittle glassy state, making its accurate prediction for conjugated polymers crucial for the design of soft, stretchable, or flexible electronics. Here we show that a single adjustable parameter can be used to build a relationship between the Tg and the molecular structure of 32 semiflexible (mostly conjugated) polymers that differ drastically in aromatic backbone and alkyl side chain chemistry. An effective mobility value, ζ, is calculated using an assigned atomic mobility value within each repeat unit. The only adjustable parameter in the calculation of ζ is the ratio of mobility between conjugated and non-conjugated atoms. We show that ζ correlates strongly to the Tg, and that this simple method predicts the Tg with a root-mean-square error of 13 °C for conjugated polymers with alkyl side chains.Identifying the vital nodes in networks is of great significance for understanding the function of nodes and the nature of networks. Many centrality indices, such as betweenness centrality (BC), eccentricity centrality (EC), closeness centricity (CC), structural holes (SH), degree centrality (DC), PageRank (PR) and eigenvector centrality (VC), have been proposed to identify the influential nodes of networks. However, some of these indices have limited application scopes. EC and CC are generally only applicable to undirected networks, while PR and VC are generally used for directed networks. To design a more applicable centrality measure, two vital node identification algorithms based on node adjacency information entropy are proposed in this paper. To validate the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed algorithms, contrast experiments are conducted with the BC, EC, CC, SH, DC, PR and VC indices in different kinds of networks. The results show that the index in this paper has a high correlation with the local metric DC, and it also has a certain correlation with the PR and VC indices for directed networks.
