Seeds contained more stigmasterol, and pods more β-sitosterol. Aglycones of saponins were identified cycloartenol in seeds, α- and β-amyrins in pods. Oligosaccharides dominated in both seeds and pods. Landraces manifested higher protein content in pods, while modern cultivars had pods with higher contents of organic acids, polyols, monosaccharides, and fatty acids. The results obtained confirm the high nutritional value of asparagus bean seeds and pods, and the prospects of their use in various diets.Increased levels of uric acid (UA) have been shown to be correlated with many clinical conditions. Uric acid may adversely affect the insulin signalling pathway inducing insulin resistance (IR). Several studies report the association between arterial stiffness (AS), an early indicator of atherosclerosis, and UA. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the association between UA and AS, considering the potential role of IR. We enrolled 1114 newly diagnosed, never-treated hypertensive patients. Insulin resistance was assessed by the homeostatic model assessment (HOMA) index. Arterial stiffness was evaluated as the measurement of the carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV). The study cohort was divided into subgroups, according to increasing tertiles of UA. The mean values of UA were 5.2 ± 1.6 mg/dL in the overall population. Pulse wave velocity was linearly correlated with UA (p less then 0.0001), HOMA (p less then 0.0001), high sensitivity C-reactive protein (p less then 0.0001), systolic blood pressure (p less then 0.0001) and LDL cholesterol (p = 0.005). Uric acid was the strongest predictor of PWV and was associated with the highest risk for increased AS. The interaction analysis showed that the joint effect of increased UA and HOMA was significantly higher than that expected in the absence of interaction under the additive model, indicating that the two biomarkers synergically interacted for promoting vascular damage. Yet, the miscibility of cork particles with thermoplastic matrices is not easy due to its low density and surface properties. Here, cork is functionalized with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) to yield cork grafted with PMMA chains particles (cork-g-PMMA). Both the ATRP macroinitiator and the cork-g-PMMA obtained are fully characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), 13C cross-polarized magic-angle spinning solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (13C CP/MAS solid state NMR), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analyses (TGA). The functionalized cork particles are then blended with commercial PMMA to afford cork-g-PMMA/PMMA. To compare, cork also is mixed with PMMA and the ensuing cork/PMMA sample and its morphology, thermal, and mechanical properties are compared with those of cork-g-PMMA/PMMA and commercial PMMA. The cork surface modification via ATRP of the methyl methacrylate (MMA) yields better dispersion in the matrix. Consequently, a blend with enhanced mechanical performance, higher thermal stability, and a higher melt flow index (MFI) is obtained when compared to the blend prepared using unmodified particles. The similarity of the MFI of cork-g-PMMA/PMMA to that of PMMA suggests good printability. Indeed, a three-dimensional (3D) printed specimen is obtained confirming that grafting using ATRP is a promising route for the preparation of high quality 3D printed products.Cells with contractile functions are present in almost all metazoans, and so are the related processes of muscle homeostasis and regeneration. Regeneration itself is a complex process unevenly spread across metazoans that ranges from full-body regeneration to partial reconstruction of damaged organs or body tissues, including muscles. The cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in regenerative processes can be homologous, co-opted, and/or evolved independently. By comparing the mechanisms of muscle homeostasis and regeneration throughout the diversity of animal body-plans and life cycles, it is possible to identify conserved and divergent cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying muscle plasticity. In this review we aim at providing an overview of muscle regeneration studies in metazoans, highlighting the major regenerative strategies and molecular pathways involved. By gathering these findings, we wish to advocate a comparative and evolutionary approach to prompt a wider use of "non-canonical" animal models for molecular and even pharmacological studies in the field of muscle regeneration.
