By multiple sequence alignment, motif 'YxYY' and 'FxPPxxWxLH' of high-affinity peptides were identified in IBV S1-NTD, while another motif 'YxFxGN' located in S2. These results indicated that high affinity peptides of gAPN could present an alternative approach to IB prevention or treatment. This study examined the effectiveness of anti-smoking messages in positively shifting perceptions of risks related to smoking among adolescents in urban Ghana, both directly through exposure to messaging and indirectly through catalyzing discussions among peers and adults. We used data from two waves of a population-based survey of 3775 adolescent girls and 3279 adolescent boys aged 13-16 years in the urban areas of Accra, Teshie, Kumasi and Sunyani in Ghana. Using an interviewer-directed questionnaire, information was collected on sociodemographic characteristics, tobacco knowledge, exposure to messages about tobacco, frequency of conversations with peers and adults about the health risks associated with smoking, as well as beliefs and attitudes towards smoking. The outcome measure is smoking risk perception in relation to shisha and cigarettes. Using causal mediation analysis, we examine the direct and indirect effects of social media relative to mass media as they work to spur discussions among peers, as w adults were never found to significantly mediate smoking prevention campaigns effects in this sample of Ghanaian adolescents. Behavior change communication programs that rely solely on traditional mass media can miss important opportunities for shifting smoking risk perceptions and sharing information on the harms of smoking. Evaluations that ignore the indirect effects of conversations among peers mediating campaign effects may fail to identify important channels that can be targeted and triggered by mass and social media tobacco control campaigns.Malignancies such as lung, breast and pancreatic carcinomas are associated with increased expression of the epidermal growth factor receptor, EGFR, and its role in the pathogenesis and progression of tumors has made this receptor a prime target in the development of antitumor therapies. In therapies targeting EGFR, the development of resistance owing to mutations and single nucleotide polymorphisms, and the expression of the receptor ligands themselves are very serious issues. In this work, both the ligand neuregulin and a bispecific antibody fragment to EGFR are conjugated separately or together to the same drug-delivery system to find the most promising candidate. Camptothecin is used as a model chemotherapeutic drug and superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles as a delivery system. Results show that the lowest LD50 is achieved by formulations conjugated to both the antibody and the ligand, demonstrating a synergy. Selleckchem Trichostatin A Additionally, the ligand location in the nucleus favors the antitumor activity of Camptothecin. The high loading capacity and efficiency convert these systems into a good alternative for administering Camptothecin, a drug whose use is otherwise severely limited by its chemical instability and poor solubility. Our choice of targeting agents allows treating tumors that express ErbB2 (Her2+ tumors) as well as Her2- tumors expressing EGFR.Curcumin (Cur) is a natural polyphenol with beneficial biological and pharmacological activities; however, it has limited applications owing to its low solubility and light sensitivity. The protein-polysaccharide complex can effectively embed lipid-soluble drugs to increase their stability and dispensability in aqueous solutions. Soybean protein isolate (Spi) and fucoidan (Fuc) were used as a polymer matrix, and core-shell nanoparticles were prepared to encapsulate Cur via electrostatic interaction under acidic and neutral conditions. The structure of the Spi-Fuc nanoparticles was studied via Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Concurrently, we evaluated the efficacy of the nanoparticles based on stability, drug loading rate, and simulated release. Our results showed that the Spi-Fuc nanoparticles (size, approximately 236.56 nm) had a spherical, core-shell structure and that they could effectively load Cur with an embedding efficiency of >95%; moreover, the system had long-term dispersion stability. Thus, we provide a simple method for Cur delivery, which can also be potentially used for delivering lipid-soluble active ingredients. In the present experimental series, we have developed a novel nanocomposite to target activated macrophages in the colon with real time imaging and therapeutic capabilities. This binary nanocomposite was formed by the covalent conjugation of mannosylated NPs (Man-NPs) with carbon dots (CDs). Man-NPs were prepared using a self-assembly method based on mannosylated decamethylenediamine-grafted carboxymethyl inulin amphiphilic acid. While, the CDs were synthesized using a simple bottom-up process using citric acid monohydrate and diethylenetriamine, which were tightly bonded to the Man-NPs surface by carbodimide coupling. The resulting nanocomposite had a uniform size of 241.3 nm with a negative charge and a high drug casing density of 25.54 wt% and blue self-fluorescence were emitted. Whereas, in vitro observation of cellular uptake indicated the greater nanocomposite uptake in inflamed macrophage as compared to the untreated macrophage and mannose receptor-negative cell lines, 4T1 respectively. However, in vivo bio distribution exhibited a large number (60%) of CDs/Man-NPs nanocomposite accumulated in the inflamed colon of colitis mice. It should be noted that the novel nanocomposite, as macrophage-targeted drug delivery, could have promise for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).Dielectric spectroscopy is employed to study the relaxation phenomena in natural polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) upon temperature and frequency variations. Effects of PHAs molecular structure on the relaxation, arising from the differences in monomeric composition, are investigated under identical conditions in a frequency range of 10-2-106 Hz, and at different temperatures. All PHA samples showed different dielectric response at different temperature. Primary α-relaxation signals are observed at temperature corresponding to the glass transition temperature. On the other hand, secondary β- and γ-relaxations are detected at low temperatures, and attributed to local motions of polar groups and small segments of the polymer chain. The dielectric properties of representative PHA samples are compared and discussed.
