PURPOSE OF REVIEW Provide an overview, the indications for use, and a synopsis of current literature regarding two evolving neurosurgical interventions-GammaTile therapy (GTT) and laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT). RECENT FINDINGS GTT delivers immediate, uniform, high-dose radiation with avoidance of direct brain-to-seed contact. Innate properties of the novel carrier system and cesium-131 source may explain lower observed rate of radiation-induced necrosis (RIN) and support use in larger and previously irradiated lesions. LITT delivers focal laser energy to cause heat-generated necrosis. Case series suggest use in difficult-to-access lesions and treatment of RIN. Collaboration among subspecialties and remaining up-to-date on evolving technology is critical in developing individualized treatment plans for patients with brain cancer. While patients should be thoroughly counseled that these interventions are not standard of care, in optimal clinical scenarios, GTT and LITT could extend quantity and quality of life for patients with few remaining options. Prospective studies are needed to establish specific treatment parameters. We report a new graphene allotrope named HOT graphene containing carbon hexagons, octagons, and tetragons. A corresponding series of nanotubes are also constructed by rolling up the HOT graphene sheet. Ab initio calculations are performed on geometric and electronic structures of the HOT graphene and the HOT graphene nanotubes. Dirac cone and high Fermi velocity are achieved in a non-hexagonal structure of HOT graphene, implying that the honeycomb structure is not an indispensable condition for Dirac fermions to exist. HOT graphene nanotubes show distinctive electronic structures depending on their topology. The (0,1) n (n ≥ 3) HOT graphene nanotubes reveal the characteristics of semimetals, while the other set of nanotubes (1,0) n shows continuously adjustable band gaps (0~ 0.51 eV) with tube size. A competition between the curvature effect and the zone-folding approximation determines the band gaps of the (1,0) n nanotubes. Novel conversion between semimetallicity and semiconductivity arises in ultra-small tubes (radius less then  4 Å, i.e., n  less then  3).Azotobacter vinelandii is a microorganism with biotechnological potential because its ability to produce alginate and polyhydroxybutyrate. Large-scale biotechnological processes are oriented to sustainable production by using biomass hydrolysates that are mainly composed by glucose and xylose. In the present study, it was observed that A. vinelandii was unable to consume xylose as the sole carbon source and that glucose assimilation in the presence of xylose was negatively affected. Adaptive Laboratory Evolution (ALE) was used as a metabolic engineering tool in A. vinelandii, to improve both carbohydrate assimilation. As a result of ALE process, the CT387 strain was obtained. The evolved strain (CT387) grown in shaken flask cultivations with xylose (8 g L-1) and glucose (2 g L-1), showed an increase of its specific growth rate (µ), as well as of its glucose and xylose uptake rates of 2, 6.45 and 3.57-fold, respectively, as compared with the parental strain. At bioreactor level, the µ, the glucose consumption rate and the relative expression of gluP that codes for the glucose permease in the evolved strain were also higher than in the native strain (1.53, 1.29 and 18-fold, respectively). Therefore, in the present study, we demonstrated the potential of ALE as a metabolic engineering tool for improving glucose and xylose consumption in A. vinelandii.Limb lengthening continues to be a real challenge to both the patient and the orthopaedic surgeon. Although it is not a difficult operative problem, there is a long and exhausting postoperative commitment which can jeopardize early good results. I aim to review the history, evolution, biology, complications and current concepts of limb lengthening. see more Ilizarov's innovative procedure using distraction histeogenesis is the mainstay of all newly developing methods of treatment. The method of fixation is evolving rapidly from unilateral external fixator to ring fixator, computer assisted and finally lengthening intramedullary nails. The newly manufactured nails avoid many of the drawbacks of external fixation but they have their own complications. In general, the indications for limb lengthening are controversial. The indications have been extended from lower limb length inequality to upper extremity lengthening, including humeral, forearm and phalangeal lengthening. A wide range in frequency of complications is recorded in the English literature, which may reach up to 100% of cases treated. With developing experience, cosmetic lengthening has become possible using external or internal lengthening devices with an acceptable rate of problems.Level of evidence V.Intramyocardial hemorrhage is an independent predictor of adverse outcomes in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Iron deposition resulting from ischemia-reperfusion injury (I/R) is pro-inflammatory and has been associated with adverse remodeling. The role of iron chelation in hemorrhagic acute myocardial infarction (AMI) has never been explored. The purpose of this study was to investigate the cardioprotection offered by the iron-chelating agent deferiprone (DFP) in a porcine AMI model by evaluating hemorrhage neutralization and subsequent cardiac remodeling. Two groups of animals underwent a reperfused AMI procedure control and DFP treated (N = 7 each). A comprehensive MRI examination was performed in healthy state and up to week 4 post-AMI, followed by histological assessment. Infarct size was not significantly different between the two groups; however, the DFP group demonstrated earlier resolution of hemorrhage (by T2* imaging) and edema (by T2 imaging). Additionally, ventricular enlargement and myocardial hypertrophy (wall thickness and mass) were significantly smaller with DFP, suggesting reduced adverse remodeling, compared to control. The histologic results were consistent with the MRI findings. To date, there is no effective targeted therapy for reperfusion hemorrhage. Our proof-of-concept study is the first to identify hemorrhage-derived iron as a therapeutic target in I/R and exploit the cardioprotective properties of an iron-chelating drug candidate in the setting of AMI. Iron chelation could potentially serve as an adjunctive therapy in hemorrhagic AMI.
