The global burden of neurosurgical disease is substantial, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Medical conferences are important in connecting those from LMICs to those from high-income countries for support and serve as an educational and networking tool. In this study, we sought to quantitatively assess the incorporation of global neurosurgery topics in international conferences related to the neurosurgical specialty.

A database of major international neurosurgical conferences, from the conference of a group of 9 major neurosurgical societies, that had global neurosurgery featured from 2015 to 2020 was created. We then did a retrospective analysis to study the characteristics of these conferences ranging from geographic location to number to different components of the conferences.

There was an increase in the number of conferences with global neurosurgery since 2015. This, in addition to the occurrence of 3 wholly global neurosurgery-related conferences in recent years, is promimote equity in neurosurgical education and practice.A 30-year-old woman experienced nasal stuffiness followed by a progressive headache and reduced visual acuity for 3 weeks. She underwent an endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approach for pituitary spindle cell oncocytoma 13 months before the present admission. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an intrasellar cystic lesion with a suprasellar extension. After endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approach for tumor removal, the histologic findings of inflammatory infiltration showed a pituitary abscess. Microscopy revealed mites and fungal hyphae. Cultures from the abscess showed Staphylococcus hyicus, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, and Aspergillus sp. The patient received a 6-week antibiotic treatment, which completely resolved the clinical symptoms and cleared the magnetic resonance imaging findings. The purpose of this retrospective study was to introduce the use of an alternative vascularized bone graft for treating scaphoid non-union. The vascularized bone graft was harvested from the dorsal base of the third metacarpal bone. From May 2014 to September 2017, 29 patients with scaphoid non-union were treated. Grip and pinch strengths were compared to the contralateral side. The patients rated wrist joint pain on a visual analogue scale. Wrist function was assessed on Mayo Wrist Score. p  0.05) for a contralateral value of 66° (range, 52°-80°). Mean wrist pain improved from 4 (range, 3-8) to 2 (range, 0-4) (p  less then  0.05). Mean pinch strength improved from 6.4 kg (range, 5.2-7.3 kg) to 8.6 kg (6.1-9.9 kg) (p  less then  0.05). Mayo Wrist Score improved from 49 (range, 10-65) to 92 (range, 70-100) (p  less then  0.05). Transferring a vascularized bone graft harvested from the base of the third metacarpal bone was an effective alternative for the treatment of scaphoid non-union, achieving bone healing and normal wrist function without significant donor-site morbidity. Aging affects the serum levels of various metabolites which may be involved in the pathogenesis of chronic diseases. The aim of this review article is to summarize the relationship between aging and alterations in the plasma phospholipids and sphingomyelins.

PRISMA guidelines were employed during all steps. Selleck Mycophenolic MEDLINE (PubMed), Scopus, Embase and Web of Sciences databases and Google Scholar were searched up to October 2020. Cohort studies investigating the relationship between aging and within-person changes in sphingomyelin (SM), phosphatidyl choline (PC), lyso PC (LPC) and phosphatidyl ethanolamine (PE) were included. Newcastle-Ottawa scale was used to assess the quality of included studies.

A total of 1425 studies were identified. After removing 610 duplicates and 723 irrelevant studies, full texts of 92 articles were evaluated. Of these 92, 6 studies (including data from 7 independent cohorts) met the inclusion criteria and are included in this review. All study populations were healthy and included both men and women. Results by sex were reported in 3 cohorts for PC, 5 cohorts for LPC, 3 cohorts for SM, and only 1 cohort for PE. In men, PC, SM, PE and LPC decreased with aging, although results for LPC were inconsistent. In women, LPC, SM, and PE increased age, whereas changes in PC were inconsistent.

Within-person serum levels of phospholipids and sphingomyelins, decrease during aging in men and increase in women. Notably, however, there were some inconsistencies across studies of LPC in men and of PC in women.

In turn, changes in energy metabolism occur in a synchronized manner with the activation of certain signaling pathways, thereby this crosstalk is responsible for determining the functionality of immune cells. The immunometabolism field has grown over time and that is becoming increasingly promising in several populations; here we discuss the mechanisms involved in sedentary and physically active middle-aged individuals and master athletes. In this context, this review shows that the physical activity status and lifelong exercise seems to be good strategies for the promotion of metabolic and functional adaptations in T lymphocytes and monocytes, counteracting inflammatory environments caused by expanded adipose tissue and sedentary behavior, as well as delaying the immunosenescence caused by aging.

To evaluate the safety, reliability, and efficacy of telemedicine in delivering tertiary subspecialty glaucoma care (herein referred to as teleglaucoma) to the veteran patient population.

Prospective case series.

Twenty patients being referred for glaucoma subspecialist opinion participated in the pilot safety study. One hundred eighteen patients participated in the secondary study of the acceptability and service efficacy of teleglaucoma.

In the pilot study, safety was assessed by determining interobserver and intraobserver consistency (Krippendorff's α). This compared an in-person assessment by a glaucoma subspecialist with the remote assessment of 2 other glaucoma subspecialists (electronic health record alone reviewed). In the secondary study, teleglaucoma was implemented whereby testing and eye examination were carried out remotely by an optometrist or comprehensive ophthalmologist, and the clinical decision was made by the glaucoma subspecialist on review of the electronic health record alone.

In the pilot study, interobserver and intraobserver consistency in making a diagnosis and treatment plan (acceptable, ≥ 0.
