Based on the genotypic, phylogenetic, chemotaxonomic, physiological and biochemical characterization, we described a new species represented by strain FF15T (=CECT 8078T = LMG 31936T), for which we propose the name Bremerella alba snov.Aggregation of insulin into amyloid fibrils is characterized by the conversion of the native secondary structure of the peptide into an enriched ß-sheet conformation. In vitro, the growth or disintegration of amyloid fibrils can be influenced by various external factors such as pH, temperature etc. While current studies mainly focus on the influence of environmental conditions on the growth process of insulin fibrils, the present study investigates the effect of pH changes on the morphology and secondary structure of mature fibrils. In the experiments, insulin is fibrillated at pH 2.5 and the grown mature fibrils are suspended in pH 4-7 solutions. The obtained structures are analyzed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Initially grown mature fibrils from pH 2.5 solutions show a long and intertwined morphology. Increasing the solution pH initiates the gradual disintegration of the filamentous morphology into unordered aggregates. These observations are supported by SERS experiments, where the spectra of the mature fibrils show mainly a β-pleated sheet conformation, while the amide I band region of the amorphous aggregates indicate exclusively α-helix/unordered structures. The results demonstrate that no complex reagent is required for the disintegration of insulin fibrils. Simply regulating the pH of the environment induces local changes in the protonation state within the peptide chains. This effectively disrupts the well-ordered β-sheet structure network based on hydrogen bonds.The superior longitudinal fascicle/fasciculus (SLF) is a major white matter tract connecting the frontal and parietal cortices in humans. Although the SLF has often been analyzed as a single entity, several studies have reported that the SLF is segregated into three distinct branches (SLF I, II, and III). They have also reported the right lateralization of the SLF III volume and discussed its relationship with lateralized cortical functions in the fronto-parietal network. However, to date, the homogeneity or heterogeneity of the age dependency and lateralization properties of SLF branches have not been fully clarified. Through this study, we aimed to clarify the age dependency and lateralization of SLF I-III by analyzing diffusion-weighted MRI (dMRI) and quantitative R1 (qR1) map datasets collected from a wide range of age groups, mostly comprising right-handed children, adolescents, adults, and seniors (6 to 81 years old). The age dependency in dMRI measurement (fractional anisotropy, FA) was heterogeneous among the three SLF branches, suggesting that these branches are regulated by distinct developmental and aging processes. Lateralization analysis on SLF branches revealed that the right SLF III was larger than the left SLF III in adults, replicating previous reports. FA measurement also suggested that, in addition to SLF III, SLF II was lateralized to the right hemisphere in adolescents and adults. We further found a left lateralization of SLF I in qR1 data, a microstructural measurement sensitive to myelin levels, in adults. These findings suggest that the SLF sub-bundles are distinct entities in terms of age dependency and lateralization.To compare the practicability (usability and satisfaction) and analytical performances of VitaPCR™ Flu A&B Assay (Credo Diagnostics Biomedical Pte. Ltd., Singapore, Republic of Singapore) and Xpert® Xpress Flu/RSV kit (Cepheid, Sunnyvale, USA), two rapid point-of-care (POC) nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) by reference to multiplex RT-PCR for respiratory viruses. Nasopharyngeal swabs (n=117) were collected from patients with influenza-like illness in Paris, France. Thawed specimens were further analyzed with both NAATs. The usability was comparable for both NAATs. Satisfaction questionnaire was better for the VitaPCR™ platform for the short time of test result in 20 minutes. Both NAATs showed comparable sensitivities (VitaPCRTM 95.0%; Xpert® Xpress 97.5%) and specificities (100%) for influenza A/B RNA detection, with excellent reliability and accuracy between both NAATs. Both VitaPCR™ and Xpert® Xpress NAATs can be implemented in hospital setting as POC NAATs to rapidly detect influenza A/B RNA in symptomatic patients.Benthic foraminifera, heavy metals, and sediment grain sizes were studied in three bays of Hainan Island, and canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) and nonparametric regression were used to reveal the relationship between foraminifera and their environment. According to our survey, the three bays were moderately contaminated by Mo and As and uncontaminated to moderately contaminated by Pb, Zn, Cr, Sb, and Hg. The spatial pattern of heavy metals was comparable to sediment transport trends, indicating that their distribution was determined by sediment transport. Both living and dead foraminiferal assemblages were analyzed, and their compositions were similar, although the latter had a higher density and diversity. Based on the CCA method, species were divided into three groups, each of which responded differently to heavy metals and grain sizes. The response curves of individual species to heavy metals and grain sizes were obtained by using the Loess (locally weighted regression) method.
The Stop the Bleed (STB) campaign was developed in part to educate the lay public about hemorrhage control techniques aimed at reducing preventable trauma deaths. Studies have shown this training increases bystanders' confidence and willingness to provide aid. One high-risk group might be better solicited to take the course individuals who have been a victim of previous trauma, as high rates of recidivism after trauma are well-established. Given this group's risk for recurrent injury, we evaluated their attitudes toward STB concepts.
We surveyed trauma patients admitted to 3 urban trauma centers in Baltimore from January 8, 2020 to March 14, 2020. The survey was terminated prematurely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Trauma patients hospitalized on any inpatient unit were invited to complete the survey via an electronic tablet. The survey asked about demographics, prior exposure to life-threatening hemorrhage and first aid training, and willingness to help a person with major bleeding.
