The lockdowns occurring across society because of the COVID-19 pandemic have had far-reaching consequences for children and adolescents. One immediate concern was what the impact of the comprehensive disease control measures on rates of violence and abuse against children and adolescents would be.
We aimed to establish rates of child abuse and degree of family conflict during the first COVID-19 lockdown spring 2020. Additionally, we aimed to investigate associations between preexisting and concurrent risk factors and abuse during these unique times.
A total of 3545 Norwegian 13- to 16-year-olds participated in this study. A total of 1944 of these had provided data 1 year before the lockdown.
We used a web survey format to assess abuse exposure and associated risk factors. The survey was administered in schools during school hours in June 2020, shortly after the reopening of schools after the first lockdown.
In this sample 8.2% reported psychological abuse during lockdown, 2.4% had experienced physic need for targeted measures to mitigate the negative outcomes of health-related crises for adolescents in risk groups such as those with low family affluence and prior abuse experiences.
In Finnish society, child maltreatment is a health and social problem with harmful consequences. Identifying families at risk may help preventing child maltreatment recurrence.
The aim of this nationwide retrospective cross-sectional study was to describe the child- and family-related risk factors associated with physical and psychological abuse experienced by 4-year-old children.
This study analyzed nationwide survey data collected by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare. Overall, 17,009 parents (46%) visiting at a child health clinic filled out the survey consent form. selleck inhibitor For 8720 children, one or both parents completed the questionnaire (24%). Of the 4-year-olds, 44% had experienced at least one form of psychological abuse and 14% physical abuse. These forms of violence co-occurred in 25% of the reported cases (p<001). Intimate partner violence (IPV) and child maltreatment co-occurred in 19.6% of psychological abuse (p<.001) and 22.5% of physical abuse cases (p<.001). Parents exposed to IPV was the risk factor most likely to predict an increased risk for both psychological abuse (OR 4.01, CI 3.41-4.72; p<.001), and physical abuse (OR 2.19, CI 1.81-2.64; p<.001). Approving of hair-pulling or pinching the child (i.e., using corporal punishment) was most likely to predict an increased risk of physical abuse (OR 13.70, CI 11.69-16.06; p<.001).
The findings emphasize the importance of preventing all forms of child maltreatment by identifying families at risk and supporting parenthood according to families' needs.

To assess the impact of lung segmentation accuracy in an automatic pipeline for quantitative analysis of CT images.
Four different platforms for automatic lung segmentation based on convolutional neural network (CNN), region-growing technique and atlas-based algorithm were considered. The platforms were tested using CT images of 55 COVID-19 patients with severe lung impairment. Four radiologists assessed the segmentations using a 5-point qualitative score (QS). For each CT series, a manually revised reference segmentation (RS) was obtained. Histogram-based quantitative metrics (QM) were calculated from CT histogram using lung segmentationsfrom all platforms and RS. Dice index (DI) and differences of QMs (ΔQMs) were calculated between RS and other segmentations.
Highest QS and lower ΔQMs values were associated to the CNN algorithm. However, only 45% CNN segmentations were judged to need no or only minimal corrections, and in only 17 cases (31%), automatic segmentations provided RS without manual corrections. Median values of the DI for the four algorithms ranged from 0.993 to 0.904. Significant differences for all QMs calculated between automatic segmentations and RS were found both when data were pooled together and stratified according to QS, indicating a relationship between qualitative and quantitative measurements. The most unstable QM was the histogram 90th percentile, with median ΔQMs values ranging from 10HU and 158HU between different algorithms.
None of tested algorithms provided fully reliable segmentation. Segmentation accuracy impacts differently on different quantitative metrics, and each of them should be individually evaluated according to the purpose of subsequent analyses.

Deformable image registration (DIR) can play an important role in the context of adaptive radiotherapy. The AAPM Task Group 132 (TG-132) has described several quantitative measures for DIR error assessment but they can only be accurately defined when there is a ground-truth present in high-contrast regions. This work aims to set out a framework to obtain optimal results for CT-CT lung DIR in clinical setting for a commercially available system by quantifying the DIR performance in both low- and high-contrast regions.
Five publicly available thorax datasets were used to assess the DIR quality. A "Ghost fiducial" method was implemented by windowing the contrast in a new feature provided by Varian Velocity v4.1. Target registration error (TRE) of the landmarks and Dice-similarity coefficient of the tumour were calculated at three different contrast settings to assess the algorithm in high- and low-contrast scenarios.
For the original unedited dataset, higher resolution DIR methods showed best performance acceptable within the recommended limit according to TG-132, when actual displacements were less than 10mm.
