In this work, we prepared flexible carbon-fiber/semimetal Bi nanosheet arrays from solvothermal-synthesized carbon-fiber/Bi2O2CO3 nanosheet arrays via a reductive calcination process. The flexible carbon-fiber/semimetal Bi nanosheet arrays can function as photocatalysts and photoelectrocatalysts for 2,4-dinitorphenol oxidation. Comparing with carbon-fiber/Bi2O2CO3 nanosheet arrays, the newly designed flexible carbon-fiber/semimetal Bi nanosheet arrays show enhanced ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) light absorption efficiency, photocurrent, photocatalytic and photoelectrocatalytic activities. Photocatalytic analyses indicate that the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of semimetal Bi occurs under solar-simulated light irradiation during photocatalytic process. The carbon fiber traps the hot electrons exerted from the SPR of semimetal Bi and creates holes in the semimetal Bi nanosheets, which boosts photocatalytic activity of the carbon fiber through plasmonic sensitization. Both photocatalytic experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the electrons transferred to carbon fiber and the holes created in semimetal Bi contribute to the formation of O_2^- and ·OH, respectively. The synergistic effect between electrocatalysis and photocatalysis under the solar-simulated light results in almost complete degradation of 2,4-dinitorphenol during the photoelectrocatalytic process. This work realizes a non-noble-metal plasmonic catalyst and provides a new avenue for the commercializaiton of photocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis using the separable and recyclable carbon-fiber/semimetal Bi nanosheet arrays in the environment-related field.A surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy sensing template consisting of gold-covered nanopillars is developed. The plasmonic slab consists of a perforated gold film at the base of the nanopillars and a Babinet complementary dot array on top of the pillars. Selumetinib inhibitor The nanopillars were fabricated by the incorporation of an iron salt precursor into a self-assembled block copolymer thin film and subsequent reactive ion etching. The preparation is easy, scalable, and cost-effective. We report on the increase in surface-enhanced Raman scattering efficiency for smaller pillar heights and stronger coupling between the dot array and perforated gold film with average enhancement factors as high as 107. In addition, the block copolymer-derived templates show an excellent relative standard deviation of 8% in the measurement of the Raman intensity. Finite difference time domain simulations were performed to investigate the nature of the electromagnetic near-field enhancement and to identify plasmonic hot spots.PURPOSE OF REVIEW The measles vaccine, first introduced in 1963, directly led to a dramatic decrease in the incidence of the disease. Measles transitioned from being a common childhood disease, affecting approximately three to four million children annually, to being eradicated in the United States in 2000. What was once an astounding victory for modern medicine, however, has recently seen a dramatic reversal in fortune, with a resurgence of measles cases in the United States. Hence, it merits careful discussion. RECENT FINDINGS The United States has seen more measles cases in 2019 than in any prior year in the past 30 years. These outbreaks are because of many factors but a significant cause is the increase in vaccine refusal within sub-populations in America. This finding indicates that the current approach that healthcare workers take with families towards MMR vaccination could be more effective. SUMMARY This article aims to educate the reader about the measles virus and its clinical presentation, the MMR vaccine and its overwhelming success, and the concerning current national and international trends in measles outbreaks. Importantly, we focus on positions proposed by hesitant vaccinators and determine how medical providers can participate in productive conversation about vaccination to better gain trust and guide improved shared clinical decision-making.PURPOSE OF REVIEW Children with medical or surgical critical illness or injury require skillful attention to physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual needs, whereas their families need support and guidance in facing life-threatening or life-changing events and gut-wrenching decisions. This article reviews current evidence and best practices for integrating palliative care into the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), with a focus on surgical patients. RECENT FINDINGS Palliative care is best integrated in a tiered approach, with primary palliative care provided by the PICU and surgical providers for all patients and families, including basic symptom management, high-quality communication, and end-of-life care. Secondary and tertiary levels of care involve unit or team-based 'champions' with additional expertise, and subspecialty palliative care teams, respectively. PICU and surgical providers should be able to provide primary palliative care, to identify patients and families for whom a palliative care consult would be helpful, and should be comfortable introducing the concept of palliative care to families. SUMMARY This review provides a framework and tools to enable PICU and surgical providers to integrate palliative care best practices into patient and family care.PURPOSE OF REVIEW The present review focuses on recent advances and current challenges in screening, diagnosis and management of tuberculosis (TB) in children, encompassing TB infection and TB disease, and public health priorities for screening and family engagement. RECENT FINDINGS Although awareness has improved in recent years that children in TB endemic areas suffer a huge disease burden, translation into better prevention and care remains challenging. Recent WHO guidelines have incorporated screening of all household contacts of pulmonary TB cases, but implementation in high incidence settings remains limited. Improved tests using noninvasive samples, such as the lateral flow urinary lipoarabinomannan assay and the new Xpert Ultra assay applied to induced sputum or stool in young children, are showing promise and further assessment is eagerly awaited. From a treatment perspective, child-friendly dispersible fixed dose combination tablets are now widely available with excellent acceptability and tolerance reported in young children.
