Finally, the importance of elaborately modulating the carrier mobility and effective mass is emphasized, and a discussion of possible future strategies is presented to aim at further enhancing the thermoelectric performance. Methods for chemical modification of native proteins in a controlled fashion are in high demand. Here, a novel protocol that exploits bifunctional reagents for transient targeting of solvent exposed disulphides to direct the introduction of a single exogenous reactive thiol handle at a lysine side chain has been developed. The protocol has successfully been applied to functionalize six different Fabs and human growth hormone.By using density-functional theory, we have systematically investigated the structural stabilities, electronic structures, and optical properties of monolayer fibrous red phosphorene. We find the monolayer fibrous red phosphorene lattice to be dynamically and thermodynamically stable based on phonon spectra calculation and ab initio molecular dynamics simulation. A small cleavage energy of approximately 0.88 J m-2 is required for creating it from its bulk, suggesting the possibility of exfoliation in experiments. Furthermore, we find that monolayer fibrous red phosphorene is a semiconductor with an indirect bandgap of approximately 2.46 eV, and the bandgap is less susceptible to the number of stacked atomic layers. Moreover, the monolayer is expected to have highly directional anisotropy effective masses and high carrier mobilities (∼104 cm2 V-1 s-1), comparable with those of monolayer black phosphorene. In addition, fibrous red phosphorene nanosheets can absorb visible light as well as their band edge alignments are well positioned for the feasibility of both photo-oxidation and photo-reduction of water within the range of -5 to 5% biaxial strains. These combined properties make the fibrous red phosphorene nanosheets an alternative to diverse nanodevices, and pave the way for a potential photocatalyst.Due to the rapid growth of drug-resistant bacterial infections, there is an urgent need to develop innovative antimicrobial strategies to conquer the bacterial antibiotic resistance problems. Although a few nanomaterial-based antimicrobial strategies have been developed, the sensitized formation of cytotoxic reactive chlorine species (RCS), including chlorine gas and chlorine free radicals, by photo-activatable plasmonic nanoparticles for evading drug-resistant bacterial infections has not yet been reported. To address this challenge, herein, we report the synthesis of an unprecedented plasmonic core-shell Ag@AgCl nanocrystal through an in situ oxidation route for the photo-induced generation of highly cytotoxic RCS. We present the detailed in vitro and in vivo investigations of visible light activated Ag@AgCl nanostructure-mediated evasion of drug-resistant bacteria. In particular, the in vivo results demonstrate the complete reepithelialization of the methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infected wounds on skin upon phototherapeutic treatment mediated Ag@AgCl NCs. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first unique example of using Ag@AgCl NCs as an external nanomedicine for photo-induced generation of RCS to mediate effective killing of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative drug resistance bacteria and healing of the subcutaneous abscesses in an in vivo mouse model.A low dispersion laser ablation setup in combination with inductively coupled plasma-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-TOFMS) was applied to clinical samples of patients undergoing platinum-based chemotherapy. selleckchem The platinum accumulation together with the distribution of elements with biological key functions (Mg, P, S, Ca, Fe, Cu and Zn) was studied in central nervous system germ cell tumor (CNS GCT) tissue, which is an aggressive tumor type located in the brain. Heterogeneous elemental distribution patterns were obtained with a pixel size of 10 μm and were correlated to histological analysis of serial sections using hematoxylin eosin staining. Highest platinum accumulation correlated with areas of necrosis, which exhibited high levels of magnesium, sulphur and calcium. Small traces of gadolinium were found in the tumor sections, which is a result of prior magnetic resonance imaging. Iron accumulated in regions, which were dense in blood vessels, whereas areas with fibrosis scar showed the lowest levels of all detected elements. This LA-ICP-TOFMS study demonstrates that the chemotherapeutic drug cisplatin accumulated in the germ cell tumor located in the brain, which is also reflected by the therapy response of the patients.[This corrects the article DOI 10.1007/s13193-019-00987-6.].Immune cell accumulation and white matter anomaly are common features of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) -infected patients in combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) era. Neuroimaging tests on cART treated patients displayed prominent diffuse white matter lesions. Notably, immune cell nodular lesion (NL) was a conspicuous type of pathological change in HIV/SIV (simian immunodeficiency virus) infected brain before cART. Therefore, we used SIV infected brain to investigate the distribution of those NLs in gray and white matters. We found a significant higher number of NLs in white matter than that in gray matter. However, virus infection correlated with macrophage NLs but not with microglia NLs, especially in white matter. In addition, NLs interrupted white matter integrity more severely, since even tiny nodules could disconnect nerve fibers in white matter tracts. In the gray matter with dense myelinated axons, NLs obviously encroached those fibers; in the area of few myelinated axons, small nodules well co-localized with extracellular matrix between neurons. The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has ramifications for the delivery of newborn nutrition and care services. World Health Organization recommends continuation of breastfeeding in these difficult times, with due precautions. If direct breastfeeding is not possible, milk expression should be explored. Pasteurized donor human milk from milk banks may be fed if mother's own milk is not available. To universalize access to human milk, the Indian government has proposed the establishment of comprehensive lactation management centers/milk banks, lactation management units, and lactation support units at all levels of the public health system. Due to COVID-19, these centers are encountering additional challenges cutting across interventions of rooming in, breastfeeding, milk expression, and provision of donor milk and kangaroo mother care. We discuss issues faced and alleviation measures taken by these centres in relation to provision of an exclusive human milk diet for infants during the pandemic.
