Compared with the control group, participants assigned to the intervention demonstrated benefits in inhibitory control and attention at the 3-month follow-up (P=.02) and in parent-reported cognitive regulatory skills at post-treatment and 3-month follow-up (P=.02 and P=.04, respectively). Preterm birth, biventricular CHD, and history of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder diagnosis were associated with improved response to the intervention.

Cogmed intervention produced improvements in the self-regulatory control abilities of adolescents with CHD. The training did not enhance other areas of executive function or behavioral outcomes. Further studies are needed to evaluate the longer-term potential benefits to other domains.

As schools plan for re-opening, understanding the potential role children play in the coronavirus infectious disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and the factors that drive severe illness in children is critical.

Children ages 0-22years with suspected severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection presenting to urgent care clinics or being hospitalized for confirmed/suspected SARS-CoV-2 infection or multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) at Massachusetts General Hospital were offered enrollment in the Massachusetts General Hospital Pediatric COVID-19 Biorepository. Enrolled children provided nasopharyngeal, oropharyngeal, and/or blood specimens. SARS-CoV-2 viral load, ACE2 RNA levels, and serology for SARS-CoV-2 were quantified.

A total of 192 children (mean age, 10.2±7.0years) were enrolled. Forty-nine children (26%) were diagnosed with acute SARS-CoV-2 infection; an additional 18 children (9%) met the criteria for MIS-C. Only 25 children (51%) with acute SARS-CoV-2 infection presented with fever; symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection, if present, were nonspecific. Nasopharyngeal viral load was highest in children in the first 2days of symptoms, significantly higher than hospitalized adults with severe disease (P=.002). Age did not impact viral load, but younger children had lower angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 expression (P=.004). Immunoglobulin M (IgM) and Immunoglobulin G (IgG) to the receptor binding domain of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein were increased in severe MIS-C (P<.001), with dysregulated humoral responses observed.

This study reveals that children may be a potential source of contagion in the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic despite having milder disease or a lack of symptoms; immune dysregulation is implicated in severe postinfectious MIS-C.Compared with mortality, the impact of weather and climate on human morbidity is less well understood, especially in the cold season. We examined the relationships between weather and emergency department (ED) visitation at hospitals in Roanoke and Charlottesville, Virginia, two locations with similar climates and population demographic profiles. Using patient-level data obtained from electronic medical records, each patient who visited the ED was linked to that day's weather from one of 8 weather stations in the region based on each patient's ZIP code of residence. The resulting 2010-2017 daily ED visit time series were examined using a distributed lag non-linear model to account for the concurrent and lagged effects of weather. Total ED visits were modeled separately for each location along with subsets based on gender, race, and age. The relationship between the relative risk of ED visitation and temperature or apparent temperature over lags of one week was positive and approximately linear at both locations. The relative risk increased about 5% on warm, humid days in both cities (lag 0 or lag 1). Cold conditions had a protective effect, with up to a 15% decline on cold days, but ED visits increased by 4% from 2 to 5 days after the cold event. The effect of thermal extremes tended to be larger for non-whites and the elderly, and there was some evidence of a greater lagged response for non-whites in Roanoke. Females in Roanoke were more impacted by winter cold conditions than males, who were more likely to show a lagged response at high temperatures. In Charlottesville, males sought ED attention at lower temperatures than did females. The similarities in the ED response patterns between these two hospitals suggest that certain aspects of the response may be generalizable to other locations that have similar climates and demographic profiles.We describe the synthesis of a series of novel nitrogen- and phosphorus-enriched biochar (activated carbon, AC) nanocomposites via the co-pyrolysis of Camellia oleifera shells (COSs) with different weight ratios of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) (wAPP wCOSs = 1-31). The physicochemical characteristics of these nanocomposites (APP@ACs) were investigated via X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, N2 adsorption/desorption analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results revealed that the APP@ACs exhibited richer N- and P-containing functional groups than unmodified AC. In addition, the removal performance of APP@AC-3 with respect to Pb(II) (723.6 mg g-1) was greatly improved relative to unmodified AC (264.2 mg g-1). Kinetic and equilibrium data followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model, respectively. The removal mechanism could be attributed to partial physisorption and predominant chemisorption. The N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms demonstrated that pore-volume properties could be an effective physical trap for Pb(II). Furthermore, the XPS and FTIR analysis revealed that the chemical removal mechanism of the APP@ACs is surface complexation via N-containing and P-containing functional groups. click here These findings indicate that the co-pyrolysis of COSs and APP leads to the formation of nitrogen- and phosphorus-containing functional groups that facilitate excellent activated carbon-based (biochar) adsorption performance.
