Interestingly, the bioproduction of these red pigments occurred only when complex organic nitrogen sources were present in the culture medium. These findings are important for the field of the selective production of Monascus-like azaphilone red pigments for the industries. This study provides a comparative assessment of the various nanodispersed markers and related detection techniques used in the immunochromatographic detection of an antibiotic lincomycin (LIN). Improving the sensitivity of the competitive lateral flow immunoassay is important, given the increasing demands for the monitoring of chemical contaminants in food. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) were used for the development and comparison of three approaches for the lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) of LIN, namely, colorimetric, fluorescence, and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)-based LFIAs. It was demonstrated that, for colorimetric and fluorescence analysis, the detection limits were comparable at 0.4 and 0.2 ng/mL, respectively. A SERS-based method allowed achieving the gain of five orders of magnitude in the assay sensitivity (1.4 fg/mL) compared to conventional LFIAs. Therefore, an integration of a SERS reporter into the LFIA is a promising tool for extremely sensitive quantitative detection of target analytes. However, implementation of this time-consuming technique requires expensive equipment and skilled personnel. In contrast, conventional AuNP- and QD-based LFIAs can provide simple, rapid, and inexpensive point-of-care testing for practical use.Multiple myeloma (MM) is a genetically heterogeneous disease, in which the process of tumorigenesis begins and progresses through the appearance and accumulation of a tangle of genomic aberrations. Several are the mechanisms of DNA damage in MM, varying from single nucleotide substitutions to complex genomic events. The timing of appearance of aberrations is well studied due to the natural history of the disease, that usually progress from pre-malignant to malignant phase. Different kinds of aberrations carry different prognostic significance and have been associated with drug resistance in some studies. Certain genetic events are well known to be associated with prognosis and are incorporated in risk evaluation in MM at diagnosis in the revised International Scoring System (R-ISS). The significance of some other aberrations needs to be further explained. Since now, few phase 3 randomized trials included analysis on patient's outcomes according to genetic risk, and further studies are needed to obtain useful data to stratify the choice of initial and subsequent treatment in MM.With the advent of the Internet of Everything, more and more devices are connected to the Internet every year. In major cities, in order to maintain normal social order, the demand for deployed cameras is also increasing. In terms of public safety, person Re-Identification (ReID) can play a big role. However, the current methods of ReID are to transfer the collected pedestrian images to the cloud for processing, which will bring huge communication costs. In order to solve this problem, we combine the recently emerging edge computing and use the edge to combine the end devices and the cloud to implement our proposed binarized segmented ResNet. Our method is mainly to divide a complete ResNet into three parts, corresponding to the end devices, the edge, and the cloud. After joint training, the corresponding segmented sub-network is deployed to the corresponding side, and inference is performed to realize ReID. In our experiments, we compared some traditional ReID methods in terms of accuracy and communication overhead. It can be found that our method can greatly reduce the communication cost on the basis of basically not reducing the recognition accuracy of ReID. In general, the communication cost can be reduced by four to eight times.Measuring respiration at home for cardiac patients, a simple method that can detect the patient's natural respiration, is needed. The purpose of this study was to develop an algorithm for estimating the tidal volume (TV) and respiratory rate (RR) from the depth value of the chest and/or abdomen, which were captured using a depth camera. The data of two different breathing patterns (normal and deep) were acquired from both the depth camera and the spirometer. The experiment was performed under two different clothing conditions (undressed and wearing a T-shirt). Thirty-nine elderly volunteers (male = 14) were enrolled in the experiment. The TV estimation algorithm for each condition was determined by regression analysis using the volume data from the spirometer as the objective variable and the depth motion data from the depth camera as the explanatory variable. The RR estimation was calculated from the peak interval. The mean absolute relative errors of the estimated TV for males were 14.0% under undressed conditions and 10.7% under T-shirt-wearing conditions; meanwhile, the relative errors for females were 14.7% and 15.5%, respectively. The estimation error for the RR was zero out of a total of 206 breaths under undressed conditions and two out of a total of 218 breaths under T-shirt-wearing conditions for males. Concerning females, the error was three out of a total of 329 breaths under undressed conditions and five out of a total of 344 breaths under T-shirt-wearing conditions. The developed algorithm for RR estimation was accurate enough, but the estimated occasionally TV had large errors, especially in deep breathing. The cause of such errors in TV estimation is presumed to be a result of the whole-body motion and inadequate setting of the measurement area.Sulfur-doped carbon nanohorns (S-CNHs) were prepared by an easy one-pot solvothermal process and were employed as efficient electrocatalysts towards water splitting. Initially, oxidation of CNHs followed by thermal treatment with the Lawesson's reagent resulted in the formation of S-CNHs with the sulfur content determined as high as 3%. The S-CNHs were thoroughly characterized by spectroscopic, thermal and electron microscopy imaging means and then electrocatalytically screened. Specifically, S-CNHs showed excellent activity and durability for both O2 and H2 evolution reactions, by showing low overpotential at 1.63 and -0.2 V vs. compound library inhibitor RHE for oxygen and hydrogen evolution reaction, respectively. Additionally, S-CNHs showed significantly lower Tafel slope value and lower current resistance compared to oxidized and pristine CNHs for both electrocatalytic reactions. The outstanding electrocatalytic properties and high conductivity, along with the high S-doping level, render S-CNHs a promising bifunctional electrocatalyst for water splitting.
