Acute lung injury (ALI)/acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a life-threatening disease with a high mortality rate, which was a common complication of fat embolism syndrome (FES). Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) has been reported to exert potent anti-inflammatory effects under various conditions. In vivo, perinephric fat was injected via tail vein to establish a rat FES model, the anti-inflammatory effects of UDCA on FES-induced lung injury were investigated through histological examination, ELISA, qRT-PCR, Western blot and immunofluorescence. In vitro, human lung microvascular endothelial cells (HPMECs) were employed to understand the protective effects of UDCA. The extent of ALI/ARDS was evaluated and validated by reduced PaO2 /FiO2 ratios, increased lung wet/dry (W/D) ratios and impaired alveolar-capillary barrier, up-regulation of ALI-related proteins in lung tissues (including myeloperoxidase [MPO], vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 [VCAM-1], intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1 [ICAM-1]), elevated protein concentration and increased proinflammatory cytokines levels (TNF-α and IL-1β) in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). Pre-treatment with UDCA remarkably alleviated these pathologic and biochemical changes of FES-induced ALI/ARDS; our data demonstrated that pre-treatment with UDCA attenuated the pathologic and biochemical changes of FES-induced ARDS, which provided a possible preventive therapy for lung injury caused by FES.Progress on the nutrition Sustainable Development Goals has been slow. More attention is needed on the 'sustainable' part, focused on impact lasting beyond programme implementation. To determine sustained impact of a multisectoral nutrition intervention that provided water, sanitation, hygiene, livelihood, health and nutrition support (2013-2015) in eastern Chad, we utilize longitudinal household data collected 2 years (2017) after the intervention ended. Between 2013 and 2015, children (6-59 months) in the multisectoral intervention were less likely to be severely wasted, underweight and had a higher weight-for-height z-score (WHZ) compared with the control. To measure sustained programme impact, we use data on six nutrition indicators from 517 children between 2015 and 2017. We ran three models a generalized linear model on cross-sectional child cohorts; a mixed-effects model on household panel data; and a mixed-effects model on child panel data. For children who were born during the programme, we saw significant improvement in underweight, weight for age z-scores (WAZs) and height-for-age z-scores (HAZs). Boys 6-23 months born after the end of the programme, on the other hand, were significantly more likely to be underweight or wasted and had lower WHZ and WAZ compared with boys born during the programme and girls born during and after the programme. Corresponding to the literature from sub-Saharan Africa, boys appear to be more vulnerable to malnutrition, which might be why they are more sensitive to programme cessation. Future monitoring, evaluations and research need to consider impact sustainability and that it might not be homogeneous across age and gender.Carbon-based quantum dots (CQDs), including spherical carbon dots and graphene quantum dots, are an emerging class of photoluminescent (PL) materials with unique properties. Great progress has been made in the design and fabrication of high-performance CQDs, however, the challenge of developing solid-state PL CQDs have aroused great interest among researchers. A clear PL mechanism is the basis for the development of high-performance solid-state CQDs for light emission and is also a prerequisite for the realization of multiple practical applications. However, the extremely complex structure of a CQD greatly limits the understanding of the solid-state PL mechanism of CQDs. So far, a variety of models have been proposed to explain the PL of solid-state CQDs, but they have not been unified. This review summarizes the current understanding of the solid-state PL of solid-state CQDs from the perspective of energy band theory and electronic transitions. In addition, the common strategies for realizing solid-state PL in CQDs are also summarized. Furthermore, the applications of CQDs in the fields of light-emitting devices, anti-counterfeiting, fingerprint detection, etc., are proposed. Finally, a brief outlook is given, highlighting current problems, and directions for development of solid-state PL of CQDs.In many disease areas, commonly used long-term clinical endpoints are becoming increasingly difficult to implement due to long follow-up times and/or increased costs. Shorter-term surrogate endpoints are urgently needed to expedite drug development, the evaluation of which requires robust and reliable statistical methodology to drive meaningful clinical conclusions about the strength of relationship with the true long-term endpoint. This paper uses a simulation study to explore one such previously proposed method, based on information theory, for evaluation of time to event surrogate and long-term endpoints, including the first examination within a meta-analytic setting of multiple clinical trials with such endpoints. The performance of the information theory method is examined for various scenarios including different dependence structures, surrogate endpoints, censoring mechanisms, treatment effects, trial and sample sizes, and for surrogate and true endpoints with a natural time-ordering. Results allow us to conclude that, contrary to some findings in the literature, the approach provides estimates of surrogacy that may be substantially lower than the true relationship between surrogate and true endpoints, and rarely reach a level that would enable confidence in the strength of a given surrogate endpoint. As a result, care is needed in the assessment of time to event surrogate and true endpoints based only on this methodology.

The levels of ghrelin and VEGF in the plasma of 6 early-onset PE (EOPE), 6 late-onset PE (LOPE) and 12 healthy pregnant (HP) women were detected using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The recombinant plasmid, pCDH-ghrelin, was designed to overexpress ghrelin in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs).
