Here we describe benthic composition data derived from benthic photoquadrats collected over 41 surveys between 1962 and 2016 at four sites on Heron reef, at the southern end of Australia's Great Barrier Reef, to assess change in coral composition over time. Surveys have often been annual, in a few years sub-annual, and the longest gap is six years. A subset of the data from two sites with the most complete records has been fully processed to allow the size of all individual colonies, and changes in species composition and cover, to be tracked over time. The taxonomy in these quadrats has been carefully checked for internal consistency, and is generally at the species level. A second subset has been processed, but has not been through full quality control, while a third subset exists as images only. This is the longest, 56 years, regular photographic record of coral cover in existence, and provides a valuable temporal contrast dating back in time to more recent studies of greater geographic extent and/or resolution.Aposematic bright colors have a key role for animal defense and can be expressed through metabolic production or by acquiring pigments from diet. Aposematic coloration can be related to both local adaptations and availability of trophic resources. The European fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra) shows significant color variability and occurs across a broad range of habitats. Here we combined field observations with common rearing experiments to disentangle the role of environmental conditions and local adaptations in determining aposematic coloration of salamander populations. Gefitinib-based PROTAC 3 We assessed color variation and measured habitat features and food availability in adults from 25 populations. Furthermore, we reared newborn larvae from 10 populations under different food availability and analyzed color of metamorphs. To assess color pattern, we measured the percentage of yellow covering the body, and the Hue, Saturation and Value of yellow coloration. Adult showed strong variation of color pattern; variation was strongly related to the individual's size, to habitat productivity and to food availability. Under common garden conditions, differences between populations were not anymore evident, and coloration was only affected by resource availability during larval development. Our results suggest that environmental conditions and food availability are more important than local adaptations in determining differences in aposematic color pattern. Most cave formation requires mass separation from a host rock in a process that operates outward from permeable pathways to create the cave void. Given the poor solubility of Fe(III) phases, such processes are insufficient to account for the significant iron formation caves (IFCs) seen in Brazilian banded iron formations (BIF) and associated rock. In this study we demonstrate that microbially-mediated reductive Fe(III) dissolution is solubilizing the poorly soluble Fe(III) phases to soluble Fe(II) in the anoxic zone behind cave walls. The resultant Fe(III)-depleted material (termed sub muros) is unable to maintain the structural integrity of the walls and repeated rounds of wall collapse lead to formation of the cave void in an active, measurable process. This mechanism may move significant quantities of Fe(II) into ground water and may help to explain the mechanism of BIF dissolution and REE enrichment in the generation of canga. The role of Fe(III) reducing microorganism and mass separation behind the walls (outward-in, rather than inward-out) is not only a novel mechanism of speleogenesis, but it also may identify a previously overlooked source of continental Fe that may have contributed to Archaean BIF formation.Soil viruses remain understudied when compared to virus found in aquatic ecosystems. Here, we investigate the ecological patterns of soil viral communities across various land use types encompassing forest, agricultural, and urban soil in Xiamen, China. We recovered 59,626 viral operational taxonomic units (vOTUs) via size-fractioned viromic approach with additional mitomycin C treatment to induce virus release from bacterial fraction. Our results show that viral communities are significantly different amongst the land use types considered. A microdiversity analysis indicates that selection act on soil vOTUs, resulting in disparities between land use associated viral communities. Soil pH is one of the major determinants of viral community structure, associated with changes of in-silico predicted host compositions of soil vOTUs. Habitat disturbance and variation of soil moisture potentially contribute to the dynamics of putative lysogenic vOTUs. These findings provide mechanistic understandings of the ecology and evolution of soil viral communities in changing environments.Internet of Things (IoT) 's devices are ubiquitous and operate in a heterogonous environment with potential security breaches. IoT Operating Systems (IoT OSs) are the backbone software for running such devices. If IoT OSs are vulnerable to security breaches, higher-level security measures may not help. This paper aims to use Machine Learning (ML) to create a tool called iDetect for detecting vulnerabilities in C/C++ source code of IoT OSs. The source code for 16 releases of IoT OSs (RIOT, Contiki, FreeRTOS, Amazon FreeRTOS) and the Software Assurance Reference Dataset (SARD) were used to create a labeled dataset of vulnerable and benign code with the reference being the Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE) vulnerabilities present in IoT OSs. Studies showed that only a subset of CWEs is present in the C/C++ source code of low-end IoT OSs.The labeled dataset was used to train three ML models for vulnerability detection Random Forest (RF), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), and Recurrent Neural Network (RNN). The three models were used independently and RF; compared to CNN and RNN, gave the highest accuracy during the testing phase for binary and multiclass classification. RF was chosen as iDetect's ML classifier. Further evaluation was done on an unseen dataset of 322 code snippets taken from TinyOS. iDetect achieved a macro-averaged F1 score (mF1) of 98.5% and weighted-average F1 score (wF1) of 98% for multiclass classification, F1 score (F1) of 97.8% for binary classification, and superior results compared to all three Static Analysis Tools (SATs) used to collect the training dataset.Humans and other animals tend to repeat or alternate their previous choices, even when judging sensory stimuli presented in a random sequence. It is unclear if and how sensory, associative, and motor cortical circuits produce these idiosyncratic behavioral biases. Here, we combined behavioral modeling of a visual perceptual decision with magnetoencephalographic (MEG) analyses of neural dynamics, across multiple regions of the human cerebral cortex. We identified distinct history-dependent neural signals in motor and posterior parietal cortex. Gamma-band activity in parietal cortex tracked previous choices in a sustained fashion, and biased evidence accumulation toward choice repetition; sustained beta-band activity in motor cortex inversely reflected the previous motor action, and biased the accumulation starting point toward alternation. The parietal, not motor, signal mediated the impact of previous on current choice and reflected individual differences in choice repetition. In sum, parietal cortical signals seem to play a key role in shaping choice sequences.Enormous amounts of keratinaceous waste make a significant and unexploited protein reserve that can be utilized through bioconversion into high-value products using microbial keratinases. This study was intended to assess the keratinase production from a newly isolated B. velezensis NCIM 5802 that can proficiently hydrolyze chicken feathers. Incubation parameters used to produce keratinase enzyme were optimized through the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) with chicken feathers as substrate. Optimization elevated the keratinase production and feather degradation by 4.92-folds (109.7 U/mL) and 2.5 folds (95.8%), respectively. Time-course profile revealed a direct correlation among bacterial growth, feather degradation, keratinase production and amino acid generation. Biochemical properties of the keratinase were evaluated, where it showed optimal activity at 60 °C and pH 10.0. The keratinase was inhibited by EDTA and PMSF, indicating it to be a serine-metalloprotease. Zymography revealed the presence of four distinct keratinases (Mr ~ 100, 62.5, 36.5 and 25 kDa) indicating its multiple forms. NMR and mass spectroscopic studies confirmed the presence of 18 free amino acids in the feather hydrolysates. Changes in feather keratin brought about by the keratinase action were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and spectroscopic (FTIR, Raman) analyses, which showed a decrease in the total crystallinity index (TCI) (1.00-0.63) and confirmed the degradation of its crystalline domain. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed the sequential structural changes occurring in the feather keratin during degradation. Present study explored the use of keratinolytic potential of the newly isolated B. velezensis NCIM 5802 in chicken feather degradation and also, unraveled the underlying keratin hydrolysis mechanism through various analyses.Alkannin/shikonin and their derivatives are specialised metabolites of high pharmaceutical and ecological importance exclusively produced in the periderm of members of the plant family Boraginaceae. Previous studies have shown that their biosynthesis is induced in response to methyl jasmonate but not salicylic acid, two phytohormones that play important roles in plant defence. However, mechanistic understanding of induction and non-induction remains largely unknown. In the present study, we generated the first comprehensive transcriptomic dataset and metabolite profiles of Lithospermum officinale plants treated with methyl jasmonate and salicylic acid to shed light on the underlying mechanisms. Our results highlight the diverse biological processes activated by both phytohormones and reveal the important regulatory role of the mevalonate pathway in alkannin/shikonin biosynthesis in L. officinale. Furthermore, by modelling a coexpression network, we uncovered structural and novel regulatory candidate genes connected to alkannin/shikonin biosynthesis. Besides providing new mechanistic insights into alkannin/shikonin biosynthesis, the generated methyl jasmonate and salicylic acid elicited expression profiles together with the coexpression networks serve as important functional genomic resources for the scientific community aiming at deepening the understanding of alkannin/shikonin biosynthesis.About 70% of people with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) experience hearing loss. There is no cure for OI, and therapies to ameliorate hearing loss rely on conventional treatments for auditory impairments in the general population. The success rate of these treatments in the OI population with poor collagenous tissues is still unclear. Here, we conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis on the efficacy of treatments addressing hearing loss in OI. This study conforms to the reporting standards of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA). Data sources include published articles in Medline via PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Embase, from their inception to November 2020. Studies included individuals with OI undergoing a hearing loss treatment, having pre- and postoperative objective assessment of hearing function at a specified follow-up length. Our search identified 1144 articles, of which 67 were reviewed at full-text screening. A random-effects meta-analysis was conducted on the selected articles (n = 12) of people with OI that underwent stapes surgery.
