In the present study, the biochemical effect of nanocurcumin (nanoCUR) compared with Gliclazide (GLZ) on the diabetic rats was studied. Forty male albino rats (Sprague Dawley) weighted 110 ± 20 g were used. Rats were randomly separated into two groups. Control, received no treatment. Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic groups take 5 ml/kg of STZ in normal saline daily for 30 days, further divided into diabetic non-treated group, did not receive any treatment diabetic group treated by nanoCUR, received 15 mg/kg/day of nanoCUR orally for 30 days; diabetic group treated by GLZ, received 2 mg/kg/day of GLZ for 30 days. The mean body weights of all rats were registered and serum samples were collected for determination of fasting blood glucose (FBG), insulin concentration, liver glucokinase (GK), and glycogen synthase (GS) activities. Liver tissues were collected for determination of mRNA expression of insulin (INS), insulin receptor A (IRA), glucokinase (GK), and glucose transporter 2 (GLUT2). The results revealed a significant reduction of body weight in diabetic rats, with no significant differences in nanoCUR and GLZ groups. There was a decline in FBG levels and significant elevation of INS levels, GK, and GS activities in diabetic rats received nanoCUR and GLZ. mRNA expression of INS, IRA, GK, and GLUT2 significantly upregulated in diabetic rats received nanoCUR and GLZ. The amazing observation was a non-significant difference in all measured parameters between nanoCUR and GLZ groups. In conclusion, nanoCUR is able to improve cellular uptake of glucose, the hepatic insulin signaling, and insulin sensitivity in diabetic rats. Its effect was similar to standard hypoglycemic drug (GLZ).The purpose of this work was to produce iron nanoparticles (Fe-NP) by microbial pathway from anaerobic bacteria grown in anaerobic fluidized bed reactors (AnFBRs) that constitute a new stage of a waste-based biorefinery. Bioparticles from biological fluidized bed reactors from a biorefinery of organic fraction of municipal solid wastes (that produces hydrolysates rich in reducing sugars) were nanodecorated (embedded nanobioparticle or nanodecorated bioparticle, ENBP) by biological reduction of iron salts. Factors "origin of bioparticles" (either from hydrogenogenic or methanogenic fluidized bed reactor) and "type of iron precursor salt" (iron chloride or iron citrate) were explored. SEM and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) showed amorphous distribution of nanoparticles (NP) on the bioparticles surface, although small structures that are nanoparticle-like could be seen in the SEM micrographs. Some agglomeration of NPs was confirmed by DLS. Average NP size was lower in general for NP in treatment, since iron NPs are commonly used in wastewater technologies that treat a wide variety of pollutants. Finally, the biological production of ENBP coupled to a biorefinery could become an environmentally friendly platform for nanomaterial biosynthesis as well as an additional source of revenues for a waste-based biorefinery. This is the first study on the dinoflagellate cysts in Algerian waters and in Mellah Lagoon (South Western Mediterranean), located within a protected reserve. In total, 42 species of dinocysts belonging to 7 orders, 12 families and 23 genera, were identified in the 26 superficial sediment samples from Mellah Lagoon. The distribution of dinocysts in the sediment of this lagoon is heterogeneous. Indeed, their abundance oscillates between 1 and 315 cysts g-1 dry sediment (DS). Cyst morphotype assemblages were dominated by a few numbers of species Alexandrium minutum (15.87%), Gonyaulax verior (9.81%), Protoperidinium spp. (7.74%), Alexandrium affine (7.05%), Scrippsiella trochoidea (6.67%), and Alexandrium pseudogonyaulax (6.19%). There is a positive correlation between the density of cysts and the depth (r = 0.61; p  less then  0.05), organic matter (r = 0.70; p  less then  0.05), water content (r = 0.71; p  less then  0.05), and the fine fraction of sediment (r = 0.74; p  less then  0.05). Surprisingly, although the Mellah Lagoon is almost semi-closed, it holds an important specific richness in dinocysts (42 species) higher than others observed in Mediterranean lagoons. However, cyst abundances are low compared to other lagoons in the Mediterranean Sea. Selleck Pemigatinib Finally, the presence of dinocysts of Alexandrium catenella/tamarense, A. minutum, and Gymnodinium catenatum associated to paralytic shellfish toxins, A. pseudogonyaulax which produces goniodomin A, also Protoceratium reticulatum and Gonyaulax spinifera complex which produce yessotoxins, needs to implement a monitoring program to prevent a potential human intoxication due to the consumption of contaminated sea products by these potent neurotoxins. In this study, two macroporous butyl rubber (BR)-based sorbents prepared in benzene (H-BR) and in cyclohexane (L-BR) with different porosities were synthesized by cryogelation technique. Their performances as a passive sampler were studied and then compared with commercially available silicon rubber (polydimethylsiloxane, PDMS) passive sampler. For that aim, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) absorption rates of the sorbents in the short-term and their accumulation capacities in the long-term periods were investigated. Four PAHs (naphthalene, phenanthrene, fluoranthene, and pyrene) with a different number of aromatic rings were utilized. The concentrations of the PAHs in solutions were quantified by fluorescence spectrophotometer. The results showed that the BR sampler prepared in benzene (H-BR) generally has the highest absorption rates for all PAHs. The rate constants k (h-1) of the H-BR, L-BR, and PDMS samplers were found as 1.07, 0.55, and 0.55 for naphthalene; 0.73, 0.16, and 0.09 for phenanthrene; 0.24, 0.26, and 0.08 for fluoranthene; and 0.97, 0.38, and 0.17 for pyrene, respectively. The highest PAH absorption capacity was found for the BR sorbents prepared in benzene for all PAHs. Thus, benzene was selected as the organic solvent rather than cyclohexane for further studies in the preparation of butyl rubber-based samplers. The H-BR possessing the highest absorption rate and capacity underlines their usage as a capable passive sampler for both short- and long-term monitoring activities in the aquatic environments.
