However, it is unknown how this selectivity for music arises. To test whether musical training is necessary, we measured fMRI responses to 192 natural sounds in 10 people with almost no musical training. When voxel responses were decomposed into underlying components, this group exhibited a music-selective component that was very similar in response profile and anatomical distribution to that previously seen in individuals with moderate musical training. We also found that musical genres that were less familiar to our participants (e.g., Balinese gamelan) produced strong responses within the music component, as did drum clips with rhythm but little melody, suggesting that these neural populations are broadly responsive to music as a whole. Our findings demonstrate that the signature properties of neural music selectivity do not require musical training to develop, showing that the music-selective neural populations are a fundamental and widespread property of the human brain.NEW & NOTEWORTHY We show that music-selective neural populations are clearly present in people without musical training, demonstrating that they are a fundamental and widespread property of the human brain. However, evidence for 5-HT effects during human movement are limited. This study examined how antagonism of the 5-HT2 receptor, which is a 5-HT receptor that promotes motoneuron excitability, affects human movement. Near-peer assisted learning (NPAL) has been welcomed in recent years as a favourable method for teaching medical students. It has proven advantages for both the educator and the learner. As such it was identified as an ideal approach for delivering the local curriculum within a paediatric surgical setting. Short duration of placements further suggests that structured tutorials would best guarantee coverage of the student curriculum. Our hypothesis was that the introduction of a structured programme such as this could lead to reduced dependence on senior staff for teaching, increased exposure of junior staff as educators, and increased coverage of the curriculum.

Curriculum outcomes were identified, and a series of tutorials developed for delivery by juniors within the department. Pre and post intervention questionnaires were given to students rotating through the department.

70 responses were analysed (23 pre; 47 post intervention). Reliance on Consultant teaching dropped 29% and engagement of surgical, GP and foundation trainees in teaching increased by 29%, 43% and 9% respectively. Overall curriculum coverage increased by 12%.

A near-peer assisted tutorial programme is an effective way of increasing coverage of the medical curriculum with benefits for tutors and learners, whilst increasing junior engagement in teaching and reducing burden on Consultants.The Tibetan chicken (Gallus gallus; TBC) is an indigenous breed found in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau that are well adapted to a hypoxic environment. The energy metabolism of embryonic brains in TBCs under hypoxia has been little reported. This study investigated changes in energy metabolism of the TBC brain during embryo development under hypoxia. We found that TBCs exhibited a change of glycolysis and the tricarboxylic acid cycle during embryo development under hypoxia. Hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1 was potentially involved in this by directly inducing overexpression of pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 1 (PDK1) and the glycolytic genes hexokinase 1 (HK1) and lactate dehydrogenase A (LDHA) to increase glycolysis of TBCs to adapt to hypoxia. Although these may not be unique to TBCs, as we had also found similar results in Dwarf Laying Chickens, a lowland chicken breed, TBCs had a stronger regulating ability. In summary, our study revealed that HIF-1 induced energy metabolism changes in the TBC brain via upregulating expressions of PDK1 and other HIF-1 target genes like HK1 and LDHA to increase glycolysis for TBC hypoxic adaptations during embryo development. It indicates the potential application of TBC energy metabolism research for other animals living on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
