Noncovalently fused-ring electron acceptors (NFREAs) have attracted much attention in recent years owing to their advantages of simple synthetic routes, high yields and low costs. However, the efficiencies of NFREAs based organic solar cells (OSCs) are still far behind those of fused-ring electron acceptors (FREAs). Herein, a series of NFREAs with S⋅⋅⋅O noncovalent intramolecular interactions were designed and synthesized with a two-step synthetic route. Upon introducing π-extended end-groups into the backbones, the electronic properties, charge transport, film morphology, and energy loss were precisely tuned by fine-tuning the degree of multi-fluorination. As a result, a record PCE of 14.53 % in labs and a certified PCE of 13.8 % for NFREAs based devices were obtained. This contribution demonstrated that combining the strategies of noncovalent conformational locks and π-extended end-group engineering is a simple and effective way to explore high-performance NFREAs.Nowadays, hydrogen activation by frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) and their applications are one of the emerging research topics in the field of catalysis. Previous studies have shown that the thermodynamics of this reaction is determined by electronic structures of FLPs and solvents. Herein, we investigated systems consisting of typical FLPs and ionic liquids (ILs), which are well known by their large number of types and excellent solvent effects. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to study the thermodynamics for H2 activation by both inter- and intra-molecular FLPs, as well as the individual components. The results show that the computed overall Gibbs free energies in ILs are more negative than that computed in toluene. Through the thermodynamics partitioning, we find that ILs favor the H-H cleavage elemental step over the elemental steps of proton attachment, hydride attachment and zwitterionic stabilization. Moreover, the results show that these effects are strongly dependent on the type of FLPs, where intra-molecular FLPs are more affected compared to the inter-molecular FLPs.Tenofovir alafenamide fumarate (TAF) has high plasma stability resulting in fewer renal adverse events compared to tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients. We aimed to study the effectiveness and renal safety of TAF in a real-world setting, in patients with or without compromised kidney function. CHB patients (Nucleos(t)ide Analogue [NA]-naïve or experienced) who received TAF >1 year from 11 academic institutions as part of the Canadian Hepatitis B Network (CanHepB) were included. Kidney function was measured by estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) as per Cockcroft-Gault. Patients were followed for up to 160 weeks. Of 176 patients receiving TAF, 143 switched from NA (88% TDF), and 33(19%) were NA naïve. Majority of NA-naïve patients (75%) achieved undetectable HBV DNA after one year of TAF treatment. Majority of patients with eGFR less then 60 mL/min who had renal deterioration during TDF (76%) reversed to eGFR increase after one year of TAF (p=0.009). Among patients with stage 2 chronic kidney disease (CKD) (eGFR 60-89), the estimated eGFR decline during TDF was halted after switching to TAF (p=0.09). NA-experienced patients with abnormal ALT before TAF showed a significant decline after switching to TAF -0.005 [-0.006 - -0.004] log10 ULN U/L/month, p less then 0.001). In CHB patients, TAF was safe, well-tolerated and effective in this real-world cohort. Switching to TAF led to improved kidney function, particularly in those with stage 2 CKD, which suggests that the indication for TAF in the guidelines could be extended to patients with an eGFR higher than 60 mL/min.

Probiotics participate in regulating oral microbiota and reducing the prevalence of oral diseases; however, clinical research on probiotics is insufficient. Therefore, in this study, we performed in vitro screening of potential oral protective probiotic strains and then evaluated the clinical efficacy of the selected strains on maintaining oral health.

Fifty healthy individuals were recruited and randomly assigned into the placebo group and probiotics group, which included three strains of probiotics, Lactobacillus salivarius subs. salicinius AP-32, Lactobacillus paracasei ET-66, and Lactobacillus plantarum LPL28. Each group was blindly administered placebo or probiotics for four weeks.

Next-generation sequencing results showed that the oral microbiota of Lactobacillus salivarius in the oral cavity were significantly increased in subjects supplemented with mixed probiotic lozenges. The anti-bacterial activities of viable probiotics were observed within two weeks. Both IgA levels and Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium abundances in the oral cavity were significantly increased in the experimental groups, along with a reduced formation of plaque. Most participants reported that their oral health conditions and intestinal symptoms had improved.

Overall, our clinical study suggests that oral probiotic lozenges may enhance oral immunity, modulate oral microbiota, and improve oral health.

The absolute configuration of the analyte compounds was elucidated with a reasonable Flack (Parsons) parameter value. This phenomenon is characteristic to the "post-crystallization" in the pre-determined CS crystalline lattice, seldom found in common crystallization where the crystalline lattice is defined by an analyte itself. The results highlight the potential of the CS method for absolute configuration determination of low ee samples, an often encountered situation in asymmetric synthesis studies.

Sputum cytology is currently the gold standard to evaluate cellular inflammation in the airways and phenotyping patients with airways diseases. BL-918 nmr Sputum eosinophil proportions have been used to guide treatment for moderate to severe asthma. Furthermore, raised sputum neutrophils are associated with poor disease control and impaired lung function in both asthma and COPD and small airways disease in cystic fibrosis. However, induced-sputum analysis is subjective and resource heavy, requiring dedicated specialist processing and assessment; this limits its utility in most clinical settings. Indirect blood eosinophil measures have been adopted in clinical care. However, there are currently no good peripheral blood biomarkers of airway neutrophils. A resource-light sputum processing approach could thus help integrate induced sputum more readily into routine clinical care. New mechanical disruption (MD) methods can rapidly obtain viable single cell suspensions from sputum samples.

The aim of this study was to compare MD sputum processing to traditional methods for cell viability, granulocyte proportions and sputum cytokine analysis.
