Two levels of cross-feeding were observed, in which A. caccae utilised the liberated monosaccharides as well as lactate and acetate produced by B. infantis. This microbial cross-feeding points towards the key ecological role of bifidobacteria in providing substrates for other important species that will colonise the infant gut. The progressive shift of the gut microbiota composition that contributes to the gradual production of butyrate could be important for host-microbial crosstalk and gut maturation.Phthalates are contaminants widely distributed in the food-chain, and they are considered as important environmental oestrogens in our lives. In the present study, eight strains of lactic acid bacteria were isolated for their ability to adsorb di-n-butyl-phthalate (DBP), and one of the strains, Lactobacillus plantarum strain P1, was selected for more detailed analyses of its phthalate adsorption capacity in vitro. This study also evaluated the in vivo protective effects of strain P1 against DBP toxicity in rats. Sixteen rats were divided into four groups, and animals received by oral gavage every other day for a period of one month saline with or without strain P1 at 2×1011 cfu/kg followed by maize oil with or without DBP (50 mg/kg). Strain P1 could adsorb more DBP than saline alone, and the concentration of mono-n-butyl phthalate in urine was decreased in animals receiving P1. Furthermore, oestrogenic effects of the different treatments were assessed through counting of sperm and observation of testis, and strain P1 could protect the sexual organs of male rats. Our results suggested that P1 is effective against phthalate toxicity due to its ability to adsorb DBP in vivo and could be considered as a new dietary therapeutic strategy against environmental phtalate toxicity.Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are chronic processes involving a deregulated immune response against intestinal microbiota in genetically susceptible individuals. Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an IBD restricted to colonic mucosa and its chronicity is a predisposing factor for colorectal cancer (CRC). Probiotics have been investigated as an adjuvant treatment for UC, and Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 (EcN) was the focus of our investigation. The aim of this study was to investigate the preventive effect of the EcN probiotic in an experimental model of chronic colitis in germ-free (GF) and conventional (CV) mice. Geldanamycin in vitro CV female mice were used for clinical, immunological and permeability experiments. GF mice were used for a faecal microbiota transplantation assay. To induce colitis, three cycles of 3.0% dextran sulphate sodium (DSS) were administered to the animals. For probiotic treatment, the mice received a daily intragastric gavage of 9.0 log10 cfu of EcN, beginning 10 days before colitis induction and continuing icial effects in this model, suggesting its usefulness for treating UC.Lipoteichoic acid (LTA) is a key component of the cell wall of most Gram-positive bacteria and plays many structural and functional roles. In probiotic lactobacilli, the function of LTA in mediating bacteria/host cross-talk has been evidenced and it has been postulated that, owing to its anionic nature, LTA may play a role in toxic metal sequestration by these bacteria. However, studies on this last aspect employing strains unable to synthesise LTA are lacking. We have inactivated the LTA polymerase encoding gene ltaS in two different Lactobacillus plantarum strains. Analysis of LTA contents in wild-type and ltaS mutant strains corroborated the role of this gene as a major contributor to LTA synthesis in L. plantarum. The mutant strains displayed strain-dependent anomalous cell morphologies that resulted in elongated or irregular cells with aberrant septum formation. They also exhibited higher sensitivity to several stresses (osmotic and heat) and to antimicrobials that target the cell wall. The toxicity of inorganic [(Hg(II)] and organic mercury (methyl-Hg) was also increased upon ltaS mutation in a strain-dependent manner. However, the mutant strains showed 0 to 50% decrease in their capacity of Hg binding compared to their corresponding parental strains. This result suggests a partial contribution of LTA to Hg binding onto the cell surface that was dependent on the strain and the Hg form. This review aims to present a comprehensive state-of-the-art analysis of the bidirectional crosstalk between gut microbiota and the central nervous system (CNS). The literature concerning the potential effects of gut microbiota on psychiatric disorders through neural pathways comprising the 'gut-brain axis' were gathered. In addition, the influence of probiotics and prebiotics and dairy-rich diets combined with the intake of probiotics and prebiotics on gut microbiota and the subsequent relationship with brain function was reviewed. However, a meta-analysis on the effectiveness of probiotic supplementation in psychiatric disorders is lacking. Therefore, a systematic search of PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and ClinicalTrials.gov databases from January 1969 to December 2019 was conducted. It led to the identification of a total of 844 research articles. Of these, a total of 23 studies met the meta-analysis criteria. Statistical analysis revealed that there was no significant difference in the symptoms of schizophrenia, stress, and anxiety between probiotic and placebo groups, post-intervention. Probiotic administration reduced depressive symptoms among patients with depression in a statistically significant manner (standardised mean difference (SMD) = -0.87; 95% confidence interval (95% confidence interval) -1.66, -0.99; P=0.03). Further evidence from larger and more rigorous studies with longer duration of probiotic administration, as well as well-defined populations, homogenous probiotic intervention and outcome measures, are needed to clarify the potential therapeutic effects of probiotics on psychiatric symptoms. Based on the current literature, it seems that not all probiotic-/prebiotic-/dairy-rich diet-based treatments exhibited a psychobiotic effect on the CNS. Among the parameters determining the success of the given treatment, the most significant were probiotic composition (multi-strain formulation), the quantity of ingested psychobiotics and the duration of the study.
