Our data suggest that high flow nasal cannula may have a role in some patients with COVID-19 presenting with hypoxemic respiratory failure, but careful patient selection is the likely key to its success.

Red cell distribution width (RDW) reflects heterogeneity of the erythrocyte volumes. High RDW is a novel risk marker, which has been associated with mortality and morbidity both from cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, but the association between RDW and measures of lung function in the general population remains unclear.

The associations of RDW with spirometry, diffusing capacity (D

) and impulse oscillometry (IOS) were investigated among 5767, 5496 and 5598 subjects (aged 50-64 years), respectively, from the Swedish CArdioPulmonary bioImage Study (SCAPIS). Multiple linear regression and general linear models were performed to examine the relationships of lung function measures and RDW, with adjustment for potential confounding factors.

Forced expiratory volume in 1s (FEV

), forced vital capacity (FVC) and FEV

/FVC were significantly and inversely associated with RDW after multivariate adjustments. For 1- standard deviation (SD) increase in RDW, FEV

decreased with 0.034L (95%CI -0.046 to -0.022L), p<0.001; FVC with 0.031L (95%CI -0.045 to -0.017L), p<0.001; and FEV

/FVC with 0.003 (95%CI -0.004 to -0.001), p=0.002. Significant associations of RDW and D

were only found among smokers. For IOS, pulmonary reactance rather than resistance was significantly associated with RDW X

decreased 0.002 kPa/(L/s) (95%CI -0.003 to -0.0002 kPa/(L/s)), p=0.025, per 1-SD higher RDW.

We found significant negative associations between RDW and measures of lung function. However, the effect sizes are small and RDW is not likely to be a sensitive marker of impaired lung function in middle-aged individuals from the general population.

We quantified Hg concentrations, carbon, and nitrogen stable isotope ratios (δ13C and δ15N) in the muscle of polar cod (Boreogadus saida), Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), and capelin (Mallotus villosus) sampled from the North-West and North-East Barents Sea during November-December 2019. Hg concentrations varied between species (14-175 ng/g dw), dependent on region, but were well below the toxicity threshold for fish health and the EU-accepted threshold for human consumption. Interspecific differences were observed only in the North-East region, with Atlantic cod having highest Hg concentrations, explained by its larger size, higher trophic position and benthopelagic feeding. Spatial differences in polar cod with higher Hg concentrations in the North-East than the North-West were likely due to a combination of differences in food web structure and Hg exposure.Disparate lines of research suggest that women's (a) emotion regulation and personality, (b) executive function and (c) sleep may be important predictors of mothers' cry responding in part through their effects on social cognition. However, the extent to which each contributes to cry responding independently remains unknown. We examined this question in a convenience sample of 109 nulliparous undergraduate women. Women completed online surveys to assess personality and emotion dysregulation traits, then visited the lab for a testing session during which they reported on sleep the night before and reactions to videotapes of crying infants and completed computerized working memory and inhibitory control tasks under challenging noise conditions (exposure to traffic and cry sounds). Results indicate that women's positive personality and higher working memory were associated with higher levels of infant-oriented cry processing (i.e., accurate distress detection, empathy and situational/emotional attributions about distress), which in turn was associated with higher intended responsiveness to infant crying. Emotion dysregulation and deficits in inhibitory control were associated with higher levels of self-oriented cry processing (i.e., anger, anxiety, negative and emotion minimizing attributions in response to infant distress), which in turn was associated with lower cry responsiveness. Short-term sleep deprivation was associated with lower intended responsiveness via the above path from poorer inhibitory control to heightened self-oriented cry processing. Findings suggest that sleep, emotional and cognitive factors are associated with cry processing and subsequent responsiveness independent of one another. This paper estimates the 137Cs ecological half-life of white-tailed deer inhabiting the Department of Energy's Savannah River Site (SRS) based on sex and age using data collected over a 51-year time-period. With a physical half-life of 30.2 yr, the biological half-life for the deer herd is considerably shorter because of the isotope's biochemical mimicry of K+ inside the body. Leveraging this long-term dataset and robust sample size, we compared the long-term half-century estimates to shorter decadal increments. The simple exponential decay model for the entire 51-year sampling period predicted an ecological half-life of 23.15 years. When breaking the sample data into decadal increments 137Cs body burden had complex temporal dynamics with predicted half-lives ranging from 9.25 to 32.33 years. TRULI Exponential decay for the entire 51-year sampling period for models evaluated by sex, age, sex*age to determine how these variables influence the predictability in the mean depuration rate, the ecological half-lives were between 21 and 23 years for all permutations, except for fawns that had a half-life no different than the physical half-life of the isotope itself. Differential habitat use and competition most likely explains why both yearling and adult females consistently had higher body burdens than males over the 51-year time period, showing how dynamic this radioisotope is in biological systems. This study is one of the most robust long-term datasets in the world (n = 42,412) that is specifically focused on monitoring the uptake and depuration of 137Cs in a wild species.
