Inactivated strain-specific vaccines have been successfully used to control rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD) caused by RHDV-2 in the rabbit industry. It is unknown whether and how vaccination of breeding does contributed to protect the population of young susceptible rabbit kits. The present study investigates whether the immunity against RHDV-2 produced by vaccination of breeding does is transmitted to their progeny and its dynamic once inherited by kits. For this purpose, New Zealand female rabbits of 8-9 weeks of age were allocated into 2 groups of 40 subjects each and bred during 6 reproductive cycles. The first experimental group was vaccinated with a commercially available inactivated vaccine against RHDV-2 whereas the second group was inoculated with PBS. Moreover, the present study was also meant to identify the mechanisms of transmission of that maternal immunity. For this reason, rabbit kits of vaccinated and non-vaccinated breeding does were cross-fostered before milk uptake. The RHDV-2 antibody response was monitored in the blood serum of breeding does and of their kits by competition ELISA (cELISA) and solid-phase ELISA (spELISA). Since it has been clearly demonstrated that cELISA positive rabbits are protected from RHD, we avoided the resorting of the challenge of the kits with RHDV-2. Results showed that RHDV-2 antibodies were inherited by kits up to one year from vaccination of breeding does. Once inherited, the maternally derived antibody response against RHDV-2 lasted at least until 28 days of life. Finally, the study also elucidated that the major contribution to the maternal derived immunity against RHDV-2 in kits was provided during gestation and probably transmitted through transplacental mechanisms although lactation provided a little contribution to it. The present study contributed to elucidate the characteristics of the maternal antibody immunity produced by vaccination and its mechanisms of transmission.Neuromuscular disorders cause progressive muscular weakness, which limits upper extremity mobility and performance during activities of daily life. Dynamic arm supports can improve mobility and quality of life. However, their use is often discontinued over time for unclear reasons. This study aimed to evaluate whether users of dynamic arm supports demonstrate and perceive quantifiable mobility benefits over a period of two months. Nine users of dynamic arm supports were included in this observational study. They had different neuromuscular disorders and collectively used four different arm supports. They were observed for three consecutive weeks during which they were equipped with a multi-sensor network of accelerometers to assess the actual use of the arm support and they were asked to provide self-reports on the perceived benefits of the devices. Benefits were experienced mainly during anti-gravity activities and the measured use did not change over time. The self-reports provided contextual information in domains such as participation to social life, in addition to the sensor system. However self-reports overestimated the actual use by up to three-fold compared to the accelerometer measures. A combination of objective and subjective methods is recommended for meaningful and quantifiable mobility benefits during activities of daily life.To investigate the durability of reinforced concrete (RC) beams under the combined actions of transverse cracks and corrosion, corrosion tests were conducted on a total of eight RC beams with different water-cement ratios and cracking states. The effects of the transverse crack width, water-cement ratio, and the length of the wetting-drying cycle on the distribution of the free chloride concentration, the cross-sectional loss of the tensile steel bars, and the chloride diffusion coefficient are analyzed. The results show that the widths of the transverse crack and the water-cement ratio of concrete greatly affected the chloride profile and content of the RC beam specimens. Specifically, the chloride contents in all the cracked RC beams at the depth of the steel bar exceeded the threshold value of 0.15%. As the width of the cracks increased, the chloride concentration and penetration of the cracked concrete beam increased. However, the chloride concentration at the reinforcement position did not seem to be obviously affected by increasing the wetting-drying cycles from 182 days to 364 days. Moreover, the decrease of the water-cement ratio effectively inhibited the penetration of chloride ions in the RC beam specimens. In terms of the cross-sectional loss of the steel bars, the average loss of the steel bar increases with increasing crack width for the beams with 182-day cycles, while the effect of crack width on the average loss is not as noticeable for the beams with 364-day cycles.
