Airway lumens remained patent with viable cells for one month in vitro with evidence of differentiation into mature epithelial cell types found in native human airways. rECM bioinks are a promising new approach for generating functional human tissue using 3D bioprinting.Prior single center or registry studies have shown that living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) decreases waitlist mortality and offers superior patient survival over deceased donor liver transplantation (DDLT). The aim of this study was to compare outcomes for adult LDLT and DDLT via systematic review. A meta-analysis was conducted to examine patient survival and graft survival, MELD, waiting time, technical complications, and postoperative infections. Out of 8600 abstracts, 19 international studies comparing adult LDLT and DDLT published between 1/2005 and 12/2017 were included. U.S. outcomes were analyzed using registry data. Overall, 4571 LDLT and 66,826 DDLT patients were examined. LDLT was associated with lower mortality at 1, 3, and 5 years posttransplant (5-year HR 0.87 [95% CI 0.81-0.93], p less then .0001), similar graft survival, lower MELD at transplant (p less then .04), shorter waiting time (p less then .0001), and lower risk of rejection (p = .02), with a higher risk of biliary complications (OR 2.14, p less then .0001). No differences were observed in rates of hepatic artery thrombosis. In meta-regression analysis, MELD difference was significantly associated with posttransplant survival (R2 0.56, p = .02). In conclusion, LDLT is associated with improved patient survival, less waiting time, and lower MELD at LT, despite posing a higher risk of biliary complications that did not affect survival posttransplant.Binary transition metal fluorides are textbook examples combining complex electronic features with most fundamental molecular structures. High-valent nickel fluorides are among the strongest known fluorinating and oxidizing agents, but there is a lack of experimental structural and spectroscopic investigations on molecular NiF3 or NiF4 . Apart from their demanding synthesis, also their quantum-chemical description is difficult due to their open shell nature and low-lying excited electronic states. Distorted tetrahedral NiF4 (D2d ) and trigonal planar NiF3 (D3h ) molecules were produced by thermal evaporation and laser ablation of nickel atoms in a fluorine/noble gas mixture and spectroscopically identified by a joint matrix-isolation and quantum-chemical study. Their vibrational band positions provide detailed insights into their molecular structures.Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) may lead to increased circulating concentrations of inflammatory biomarkers and treatment may change these. We aimed to assess the effect of oral appliance (OA) therapy on inflammatory biomarkers in a randomised controlled pilot trial. A total of 71 patients with OSA and systemic hypertension were randomly allocated to an active, mandible protruded (OAa) or a passive, mandible non-protruded device (OAp) treatment. Serum concentrations of the inflammatory biomarkers white blood cells, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, interleukin 6, interleukin 10, and tumour necrosis factor-α were measured at baseline and after 3 months of OA treatment. The differences between treatment groups in biomarker concentration change during the treatment were presented as the Vargha and Delaney effect size and evaluated with the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test. This effect size expresses the probability of a higher value in a random participant from one group compared with a random patient from the other group, and a value of 0.5 means stochastically equal groups. After 3 months of treatment, there was a significant reduction of the apnea-hypopnea index in the OAa group compared with the OAp group (effect size 0.258, 95% confidence interval 0.146-0.386, p less then .001). There were no significant differences between the groups in any of the inflammatory markers' concentration changes during the treatment period (effect sizes between 0.488 and 0.524; all p values ≥.737). Thus, OA treatment for 3 months did not affect circulating concentrations of some common inflammatory markers in patients with OSA and systemic hypertension.Cocaine-dependent (CD) individuals demonstrate significant anxiety and dysphoria during withdrawal, a negative emotional state that may perpetuate drug seeking and consumption. An extensive body of work has focused on characterizing reward circuit dysfunction, but relatively little is known about the pain circuit during cocaine withdrawal. In an earlier study, we highlighted how cue-elicited functional connectivity between the periaqueductal gray (PAG), a subcortical hub of the pain circuit, and ventromedial prefrontal cortex supports tonic craving in recently abstinent CD. The functional organization of the brain can be characterized by intrinsic connectivities, and it is highly likely that the resting state functional connectivity (rsFC) of the PAG may also be altered in association with cocaine use variables. Here, we examined this issue in 52 CD and 52 healthy control (HC) participants. Imaging data were processed with published routines, and the findings were evaluated with a corrected threshold. selleck products In a covariance analysis, CD as compared with HC showed higher PAG rsFC with the hypothalamus, dorsomedial prefrontal, and inferior parietal cortices. Further, these connectivities were correlated negatively with tonic cocaine craving and recent cocaine use, respectively. Higher hypothalamic and frontoparietal rsFC with the PAG may reflect a compensatory process to regulate craving and compulsive drug use. The findings provide additional evidence in humans implicating the PAG circuit and may help research of the role of negative reinforcement in sustaining habitual drug use in cocaine addiction.Primo Levi (1919-1987) has become an iconic figure at the intersection of chemistry and culture. Levi has long been praised for his autobiographical account as survivor in Auschwitz and by his literary masterpiece "The Periodic Table." Little is however known beyond such facts, especially his academic period and early research on stereochemistry at the University of Turin, which were abruptly truncated by the racial laws and WWII. Even if, later on, Primo Levi succeeded as industrial chemist, he had a vivid interest in molecular asymmetry that lasted through his entire life. This concise paper highlights a little known academic period in the midst of social and political upheaval. Levi left us his humanity in an otherwise tortuous life, and his literature took inspiration from chemistry; perhaps as a metaphor connecting the physical world and people's life.
